Changes in udder health and antibiotic resistance of mastitis pathogens isolated from dairies upon conversion from conventional to organic management over a 3-year period was studied. Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) were the most prevalent mastitis pathogens isolated. CNS were significantly less resistant to β-lactam antibiotics when isolated from milk after the herd transitioned to organic management. Cessation of the use of antimicrobial therapies in dairies in combination with organic management could lead to a reduction in the antimicrobial resistance of mastitis pathogens.

It was found that clinical strains of Ps. aeruginosa produced inducable beta-lactamase in the presence of penicillins, such as benzylpenicillin, ampicillin, carbenicillin. The amount of beta-lactamase depended on the strain and the inductor type and increased with the inductor concentration increase. Benzylpenicillin was the most active inductor of the enzyme synthesis by Ps. aeruginosa, strain 649. A flow cytometry test was developed to identify carbapenemase production by Enterobacteriaceae and to discriminate between the different types of carbapenemases (classes A, B, and D). It is based on the detection of meropenem activity against bacteria, coupled with different carbapenemase inhibitors, which is assessed by flow cytometry. It represents a convenient, fast, and reliable approach (100% sensitivity and 100% specificity) for the detection and characterization of different carbapenemases.
