Phenotypes of patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea as confirmed by cluster analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Patients with OSA manifest different patterns of disease. However, this heterogeneity is more evident in patients with mild-moderate OSA than in those with severe disease and a high total AHI. We hypothesized that mild-moderate OSA can be categorized into discreet disease phenotypes, and the aim of this study was to comprehensively describe the pattern of OSA phenotypes through the use of cluster analysis techniques. METHODS: The data for 1184 consecutive patients, collected over 24 months, was analysed. Patients with a total AHI of 5-30/h were categorized according …

Descriptive characteristics and cluster analysis of male veteran hazardous drinkers in an alcohol moderation intervention.

Current efforts underway to develop the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) have reignited discussions for classifying the substance use disorders. This study's aim was to contribute to the understanding of abusive alcohol use and its validity as a diagnosis. Cluster analysis was used to identify relatively homogeneous groups of hazardous, nondependent drinkers by using data collected from the Prevention and Treatment of Hypertension Study (PATHS), a multisite trial that examined the ability of a cognitive-behavioral-based alcohol reduction intervention, compared to …

Improving detection of differentially expressed gene sets by applying cluster enrichment analysis to Gene Ontology.

BACKGROUND: Gene set analysis based on Gene Ontology (GO) can be a promising method for the analysis of differential expression patterns. However, current studies that focus on individual GO terms have limited analytical power, because the complex structure of GO introduces strong dependencies among the terms, and some genes that are annotated to a GO term cannot be found by statistically significant enrichment. RESULTS: We proposed a method for enriching clustered GO terms based on semantic similarity, namely cluster enrichment analysis based on GO (CeaGO), to extend the individual term anal

Cluster analysis for the impact of sickle cell disease on the human erythrocyte protein interactome.

Protein interaction networks provide useful information to assess impacts of disease on cell functions. Statistical clustering methods applied to these networks can reveal impacts on particular functional groups of proteins. In addition, clustering methods can identify subsets of proteins that require additional study to provide updated information regarding their position within an interaction network, and hence increase our understanding of their relationships with other proteins in the network. These ideas are illustrated here by considering the impacts of sickle cell disease on the human e

Crouch gait patterns defined using k-means cluster analysis are related to underlying clinical pathology.

In this study a gait classification method was developed and applied to subjects with Cerebral palsy who walk with excessive knee flexion at initial contact. Sagittal plane gait data, simplified using the gait features method, is used as input into a k-means cluster analysis to determine homogeneous groups. Several clinical domains were explored to determine if the clusters are related to underlying pathology. These domains included age, joint range-of-motion, strength, selective motor control, and spasticity. Principal component analysis is used to determine one overall score for each of the …

Source location of air pollution and cardiac autonomic function: trajectory cluster analysis for exposure assessment.

Although many studies report that exposure to air pollution harms health, few have examined associations between pollution sources and health outcomes. We hypothesized that pollution originating in different locations has different associations with heart rate variability (HRV) among 497 men from the Normative Aging Study in Boston, Massachusetts. We identified the paths that air masses traveled ('back-trajectories') before arriving in Boston on the days the men were examined. Next, we classified these trajectories into six clusters. We examined whether the association of measured air pollutan

The importance of degree versus type of maltreatment: a cluster analysis of child abuse types.

The author conducted secondary data analysis of 3 previously reported studies (D. J. Higgins & M.P. McCabe, 1998, 2000b, 2003) to examine whether respondents are best classified according to their experience of separate maltreatment types (sexual abuse, physical abuse, psychological maltreatment, neglect, and witnessing family violence) or whether their experience reflects a single unifying concept: child maltreatment. The author conducted a cluster analysis of the combined dataset followed by a confirmatory discriminant function analysis. Finally, the differences in psychological adjustment b…

Antigenic diversity of psittacine herpesviruses: cluster analysis of antigenic differences obtained from cross-neutralization tests.

A total number of 28 viruses were isolated from different diseased or dead psittacine birds on various occasions. All of them were end-point purified and identified as herpesviruses (HV) on the basis of chloroform sensitivity, inhibition of multiplication in cell cultures by 5 iodo 2'-deoxyuridine (IUDR), lack of haemagglutination and morphology by electron microscopy. Antisera were produced in rabbits with each of the viruses. Herpesviruses from other birds (duck plague HV, stork HV, crane HV) were used for comparison. All virus/antiserum combinations were tested for homologous and heterologo

Magnetic resonance imaging of peripheral nerve sheath tumors. Assessment by numerical visual fuzzy cluster analysis.

A retrospective, nonblinded review of ten nerve sheath tumors (four malignant) selected for pathologic proof and complete magnetic resonance (MR) evaluation was performed to assess the primary tumor location, signal pattern, and extent of reactive zone. A modification of visual fuzzy cluster analysis (VFCA) that emphasized the number of visual fuzzy clusters in each mass was developed to assess the neural tumors. The MR findings were correlated with the findings at surgery and histopathology. There were six men and four women, aged 19 to 62 years (mean, 43). Nine tumors involved the lower extr…

Latent Class Analysis for Clustering Iranian Individuals Based on Cardiovascular Risk Factors.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a major public health concern, and conventional risk-stratification tools, such as WHO/ISH (IraPEN), may not adequately capture the heterogeneity of risk profiles within the population. This study aimed to identify the underlying patterns of CVD risk factors among employees undergoing routine occupational health assessments in Iran. METHODS: In this cross-sectional secondary analysis, data from 1,281 adults aged 40-79 years attending a governmental occupational health clinic in 2024 were analyzed. Core cardiovascular risk variables-including se

Spatial epidemiology of intimate partner violence in Kenya: A county-level clustering analysis.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health challenge globally. In this study, spatial analysis was done to study the distribution and clustering of IPV perpetrated against women by their current or most recent husband or intimate partner, across counties in Kenya in terms of lifetime and past 12-month prevalence. Using publicly available, county-level data from the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey 2022, secondary analysis was conducted. County-level lifetime and past 12-month IPV prevalence were analysed. GeoDa 1.20.0.36 and ArcMap 10.8.1 were used for spatial analysis a

Haptic-Sound Analysis of Materials' Clustering Based on Tool Tip Tapping Exploration.

Tapping surfaces with a tool tip elicits both sound and haptic information. Sound and haptic information is captured by a microphone and an accelerometer attached to the tip, respectively. In relation to the task of distinguishing objects, this paper investigates the following two questions: (1) how do both the signals (sound and acceleration) help us to assess the surface individually? (2) How does the integration of both modalities affect this assessment? We approach the problem of texture assessment as an unsupervised learning problem. For this purpose, perceptual filter banks are designed

Clustering of Cerebral Microbleeds in Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy: A Flow Territory-Based Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are a key imaging marker of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), but their individual spatial distribution and potential clustering remain poorly understood. PURPOSE: This study assessed whether CMBs exhibit patient-specific, flow territory-based clustering in sporadic (sCAA) and Dutch-type hereditary CAA (D-CAA). The arterial flow territory subdivision was chosen, considering the predilection of CMB location in the posterior cortex-not limited to the occipital lobe-and the prominent vascular role in CAA. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective cross-sectional study.

Retrospective analysis of clustered neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases in captive lions in the early 1970s.

Rustrela virus (RusV), a recently discovered pathogen for domestic and wildlife animals, was identified as the causative agent of meningoencephalomyelitis in domestic cats and various zoo animals including lions. To analyze a past outbreak of increased mortality in lions and to reveal its possible etiological relationship with an RusV infection, this retrospective study re-evaluates 20 cases of lions originating from a zoo in Western Germany using archived formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues. Animals with different neurologic signs were submitted for necropsy between December 1970

Comprehensive Genomic and Evolutionary Analysis of Biofilm Matrix Clusters and Proteins in the Vibrio Genus.

Vibrio cholerae pathogens cause cholera, an acute diarrheal disease resulting in significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Biofilms in vibrios enhance their survival in natural ecosystems and facilitate transmission during cholera outbreaks. Critical components of the biofilm matrix include the Vibrio polysaccharides produced by the vps-1 and vps-2 gene clusters and the biofilm matrix proteins encoded in the rbm gene cluster, together comprising the biofilm matrix cluster. However, the biofilm matrix clusters and their evolutionary patterns in other Vibrio species remain underexplored. In
