Chronic pain and weather conditions in patients suffering from temporomandibular disorders: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) often report increased pain in response to changes in weather conditions. Nevertheless, scientific evidence supporting this relationship is scarce. The aim of this study was to assess a potential relationship between pain intensity and meteorological factors, through a newly developed, portable device, in patients affected by chronic masticatory muscle pain. METHODS: Seven female subjects were diagnosed with myofascial pain of the masticatory muscles, according to RDC/TMD criteria, were recruited, and participated in the study. Each

Self-reported ability to concentrate in patients with painful temporomandibular disorders compared to the general population.

OBJECTIVES: This study explored whether patients with painful temporomandibular disorders (TMD) differ from the general population in the frequency of self-reported disability to concentrate, because altered processing of sensory information had been reported previously. Additionally, the correlation of the frequency of concentration problems with the dysfunctional grade of TMD pain shall be evaluated. METHODS: Subjects were 286 consecutive German patients with painful TMD diagnosed using the Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC/TMD) and 2026 members of a representative German community sample.

Estimating emergence sequences of permanent teeth in Flemish schoolchildren using interval-censored biplots: a graphical display of tooth emergence sequences.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to investigate the pattern of emergence of permanent teeth using nonparametric techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were obtained from the Signal-Tandmobiel project, a 6-year prospective dental study conducted in Flanders (Belgium) in which 4468 primary school children born in 1989 were annually examined. A new exploratory method for interval-censored data, the IC-biplot, was applied to estimate individual sequences of emergence. In addition, the method renders a nice graphical representation of both children and teeth in the plane where the ind

Temporomandibular disorder patients' journey through care.

UNLABELLED: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a common group of chronic disorders (illnesses) that health care providers can find difficult to diagnose and explain. Similar difficulties in the diagnosis of other chronic conditions have been shown to have a negative impact on health. An understanding of TMD patients' experiences and journey through care could indicate time points and strategies to help patients. OBJECTIVE: To develop a robust empirically derived map of TMD sufferers' journey through care. METHODS: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews was undertaken using

What statistical method should be used to evaluate risk factors associated with dmfs index? Evidence from the National Pathfinder Survey of 4-year-old Italian children.

BACKGROUND: Traditional approaches to the analysis of dmfs/DMFS count data pose analytical challenges, considering the increasing proportion of zeroes in the distribution. The aim of this paper was to predict the probability of 'caries-free' subjects and the dependence of dmfs index on the influence of childhood sociodemographic factors, through the application of regression models. METHODS: Data were gathered as part of the National Pathfinder Survey of 4-year-old Italian children. Clinical data on caries disease (dmfs) and childhood sociodemographic factors were collected. The predicted pro

Risk factors in the occurrence of enamel defects of the first permanent molars among schoolchildren in Western Australia.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of enamel defects in the first permanent molars among children in Western Australia is higher than that reported for some European countries. The cause(s) of the defects, both white diffuse opacities and demarcated opacities, with or without hypoplasia, continue to be investigated. A recent review identified childhood illnesses and exposure to environmental toxins as putative causal factors for the occurrence of demarcated opacities (usually in association with hypoplasia). Diffuse opacities have been reported to be associated with exposure to the antibiotic amoxicil

A preliminary investigation of the relationship of dental fear to other specific fears, general fearfulness, disgust sensitivity and harm sensitivity.

OBJECTIVES: People with dental fear often suffer from other psychological disorders, as well as from a number of other specific fears. Fear of going to the dentist may be associated not only with general fearfulness, but also with underlying personality dispositions. This exploratory study, therefore, investigated the associations between dental fear and 67 other specific fears, general fearfulness, disgust sensitivity and harm sensitivity. METHODS: Participants were 88 Australian adults who were administered the Fear Survey Schedule III (FSS-III), the Harm Sensitivity Index and the Disgust S
