Community-based approach to schistosomiasis control.

With few exceptions, efforts to control schistosomiasis have relied upon ongoing community cooperation with "outsiders' rather than creating within the community the capacity and means for carrying out ongoing disease control measures with minimal external support. Offered as a useful model is a program in Kaele subdivision, Extreme North Province, Cameroon designed to establish and integrate within the primary health care (PHC) system the control of urinary schistosomiasis, hyperendemic in the region. Employment in family planning and women's status in Bangladesh.

This study investigates how employment in family planning affects the status of community workers. The focus is on three critical variables: prestige, professional status, and social influence. The data are derived from a focus-group study conducted in 1987-88 in the Maternal and Child Health and Family Planning Project in Matlab, Bangladesh. Focus-group sessions were held with community workers, their husbands, community leaders, and community women. Results show that although community workers initially faced intense hostility in the community, they succeeded in maintaining the prestige that

Methods of training lay individuals in the use of evidence-based services for the management of mental and behavioral health disorders: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: This objective of this scoping review was to describe how lay individuals have been trained to deliver evidence-based services to manage mental and behavioral health disorders. INTRODUCTION: Health service delivery by lay individuals is commonly used for managing mental and behavioral health disorders in low-resource settings. Prior systematic reviews have examined the characteristics of lay health workers, the types of services they provide, and the efficacy of their services; however, a significant gap exists in documenting the training these individuals receive. Village-integrated eye workers for prevention of corneal ulcers in Nepal (VIEW study): a cluster-randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Corneal ulcers are a common cause of blindness in low-income and middle-income countries, usually resulting from traumatic corneal abrasions during agricultural work. Antimicrobial prophylaxis of corneal abrasions can help prevent corneal ulcers, but delays in the initiation of therapy are frequent. We aimed to assess whether a community-based programme for corneal ulcer prevention would reduce the incidence of corneal ulceration. METHODS: A cluster-randomised trial was performed in village development committees (VDCs) in Nepal. VDCs in the catchment area of Bharatpur Eye Hospita
