Mycetoma patients were investigated for cell-mediate immunity by means of the tuberculin test, DNCB sensitization and lymphocyte transformation induced by phytohaemagglutinin. Levels of immunoglobulins, IgG, IgM and IgA were also determined. Results seem to point towards deficiency in cell-mediated immunity at least partial if not whole. There was a definite rise in the IgM and IgA class of immunoglobulins and a decrease in IgG. These antibodies are of diagnostic value in the precipitin and complement fixation tests but have no protective value.

Sensitivity and specificity of TPHA, TPI, RPCF, Kline's and Kolmer's tests are compared in a retrospective study carried out on 2,500 sera. The interest of these tests differs as far as diagnosis and survey of syphilis are concerned and the association of TPHA with a quantitative test as Kline's test appears optimal. TPHA is highly sensitive and specific. Its positivity, which usually remains after treatment, is particularly valuable in the diagnosis of cases of late syphilis. Its association with a quantitative test brings a better evaluation of the evolutivity of the disease.

Quantitative immunodiffusion (QID) and complement fixation (CF) methods were compared for their agreement in detecting coccidioidal antibodies. For these studies, we assayed 719 sera from 181 patients with coccidioidomycosis. Over 60% of the specimens had CF results of 1:2 to 1:256. A total of 43 patients had five or more specimens obtained over periods of between 1 and 8 years. Recent investigations of infections with Onchocerca volvulus in Guatemala presented the opportunity to study some aspects of complement fixation (CF) antibody titers. An extract of adult O. volvulus obtained from nodules excised from patients was used as antigen.
