Bioretention systems are planted media filters used in stormwater infrastructure. Maintaining plant growth and survival is challenging because most designs require significant sand. Conventional bioretention soil media (BSM) might be augmented with biochar to make the BSM more favorable to plants, to improve nutrient removal efficiency, and enhance plant survivability during drought while replacing compost/mulch components that have been linked to excess nutrient export. Pots with BSMs representing high and moderate sand content were amended with wood biochar, planted with switchgrass, and sub

Biological and thermochemical sanitization of source-separated human solid waste (HSW) are effective technologies for unsewered communities. While both methods are capable of fecal pathogen sterilization, the agronomically-beneficial properties of waste sanitized between methods remains unclear. Therefore, this study compared recovery and quality of soil amendments produced by compostation, torrefaction, and pyrolysis of HSW, established their financial value, and quantified tradeoffs between product value and conversion efficiency. Temperature and associated mass losses significantly affected

The characteristics of malodor released from piggery excreta samples were investigated by measuring their emission concentrations both before and after such treatments as composting or aeration from field sites. These samples were then collected from field sites and brought into the lab for analysis with the aid of the dynamic flux chamber method. The dominating compounds in the emissions were reduced sulfur compounds, phenol, and indole. The results were examined in terms of two key odor indices: odor intensity (OI) and odor activity values (OAVs), after being grouped by some criteria. When t

Methane emissions from manure management contribute substantially to greenhouse gas release. Compost biofilters offer a sustainable approach for methane mitigation through the activity of methane oxidizing bacteria. However, thermophilic compost biofilters remain poorly characterized compared with mesophilic systems. This study investigated a full-scale thermophilic compost biofilter treating manure derived gas to evaluate the impact of nutrient availability on methane oxidation performance, and the potential for simultaneous removal of organic micropollutants. Batch experiments at 50 °C revea

Cadmium contamination of soils poses a global threat to food security and ecosystem stability. Soil bacteria play a key role in mitigating Cd-induced stress, and their adaptive capabilities can be modulated by the application of organic amendments such as compost, fermented bark, or preparations containing humic acid. This article presents the results of studies on soil bacterial communities using culture-dependent and next-generation sequencing approaches. Based on the obtained data, colony development indices and ecophysiological diversity indices were determined for organotrophic bacteria a

Although maintaining/improving soil organic matter (SOM) quantity through utilizing organic amendments (OAs) is a productive practice, information on OA components contributing to long-term SOM accumulation in agricultural soils remains meager. Hence, we examined soil samples from a long-term experiment with different fertilizer managements, including no fertilizer (NF), chemical fertilizer (CF) only (CF), bark compost plus CF (BC + CF), coffee residue compost plus CF (CRC + CF), cattle manure compost plus CF (CMC + CF), and cattle manure compost (CMC) or sewage sludge compost (SSC) alone at a

The ancient practice of applying latrine wastes to agricultural land has maintained soil fertility in Vietnam for several centuries but may be associated with health risks if the wastes are inadequately treated before usage. This study aimed at investigating the perceptions and handling practices using latrine wastes as fertilizers in a community in central Vietnam. Information was collected through structured questionnaire interviews administered to 75 farming households, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews. The majority (64%) of households had a single vault latrine, a poss

Organic fertilizer (OF) application can significantly enhance soil fertility and crop yield. However, its influence on nitrogen (N) loss via ammonia (NH3) volatilization from reclaimed coastal paddy soil is not well known. We conducted a pot experiment here using cyanobacteria compost of sawdust and chicken manure plus cyanobacterial sludge, with four treatments, i.e., no urea-N (CK), urea-N (U), 80% urea-N (RU), and 80% urea-N plus compost (RU+OF), to examine these effects. The results showed that reducing urea-N input increased rice grain yield by 29.9-52.1% compared to U treatment. However,

A metal-arsenic polluted soil from sulphide-mine waste was treated, in all possible combinations, with two different amounts of marble sludge (98% CaCO3), compost (41% organic carbon), and Byferrox (70% Fe). Lixiviate and pore water from each treated and untreated soil were analysed, and lettuce-seed bioassays were performed. None of the treatments decreased the electrical conductivity of lixiviates or the concentrations of all pollutants found in both solutions. Marble sludge and compost increased the pH values and decreased the zinc, cadmium, copper, and lead concentrations in both solutions

Quantitative determination of metals in environmental matrices became important in the past few decades because of increasing pollutant concentrations in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The extraction phase in the process of determining metals is crucial but very time-consuming. Consequently, new extraction techniques for extractable metals have been developed which probably will substitute conventional procedures in the future. The aim of this study was to improve a closed vessel microwave assisted extraction (MAE) by using EDTA as an exclusive extraction agent (MAE-EDTA) for the determin

The new EU regulations on maximum levels of cadmium (Cd) in cacao products sparked research on countermeasures to reduce Cd concentrations in cacao beans. This study was set up to test the effects of soil amendments in two established cacao orchards (soil pH 6.6 and 5.1) in Ecuador. Soil amendments included: 1) agricultural limestone at 2.0 and 4.0 Mg ha-1 y-1, 2) gypsum at 2.0 and 4.0 Mg ha-1 y-1 and 3) compost at 12.5 and 25 Mg ha-1 y-1, all amendments were applied at the surface during two subsequent years. Lime application increased the soil pH by one unit down to 20 cm depth. On the acid

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from organic materials plays a vital role in regulating soil ecological functions and remediating heavy metal contamination. We conducted a 120-day decomposition experiment with three types of organic materials, including composted pig manure, corn stover, and biochar. Using three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy and parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC), we analyzed the compositional change of DOM during decomposition and its complexation characteristics with Cd. Results showed that the DOM content of all materials decreased over time and stabiliz

Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) involves applying crushed silicate minerals to cropland soils to remove carbon dioxide and stabilize the global climate. If practiced widely, ERW has the potential to mitigate climate change and improve soil health and crop productivity. However, most ERW studies emphasize inorganic carbon (IC) chemistry, using model-based estimates and short-term mesocosms. Limited field data exist on how ERW interacts with organic amendments to affect organic carbon (C) cycling in soils. In a three-year field study in conventionally managed, irrigated maize fields, we monitored

A growing niche in the locally grown food movement is the small-scale production of broiler chickens using the pasture-raised poultry production model. Limited research exists that focuses on Salmonella and Campylobacter contamination in the environment associated with on-farm processing of pasture-raised broilers. The objective of this study was to establish data relative to Salmonella and Campylobacter prevalence and concentration in soil and mortality compost resulting from prior processing waste disposal in the small-scale, on-farm broiler processing environment. Salmonella and Campylobact

Waste plastics represent a serious and growing environmental problem. Whereas biodegradable polyesters such as polycaprolactone (PCL) and polylactic acid (PLA) offer a potential solution, their spontaneous degradation takes up to 3 years in the field. Industrial composting, an alternative approach, is labor and energy intensive as well as being prone to cross-contamination by other plastics. In recent years, exploitation of bespoke enzyme systems has been shown to accelerate composting but these innovative approaches are thus far unsuitable for field deployment. We address this challenge by de

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis has been described in mushrooms workers caused by exposure to mushroom or fungal spores in the compost used to grow mushrooms. We describe two mushroom workers who developed hypersensitivity pneumonitis due to exposure to avian proteins found in poultry manure which was used in producing mushroom compost. Both workers were employed in the compost production area. Both presented with typical features of HP. Both workers had negative serological and precipitin studies to Apergillus fumigatus, Saccarhopolyspora rectivirgula and thermophilic actinomycetes but had posit

Livestock manure is widely treated by anaerobic digestion (AD) followed by composting or conventional thermal treatment (70 °C, 30 min) prior to land application, yet the community‑level fate of RNA viruses across treatment chains remains undefined considering their potential ecological and public health risks. Here, we systematically characterized RNA viromes in raw manure, AD digestate, compost, and thermally treated digestate (70-90 °C, 30 min) using metatranscriptomics and RT-qPCR. A total of 7472 viral operational taxonomic units (vOTUs) were identified, with hosts spanning plants, verteb

This study aims to investigate the emanating challenges in urban and healthcare waste management in Isfahan, after the new Coronavirus outbreak. Production of 'dry wastes' in Isfahan, with a population of more than 1.9 million, has increased during the pandemic. Personal protective equipments (PPEs) including face masks, single-use gloves and face shields are an emerging group of materials in Isfahan's waste stream. On average, Isfahanian residents have daily discarded over 1.49 and 2.98 million pieces of facemasks and plastic gloves, respectively, after the new Coronavirus pandemic. Overall p

The aim of this study was to assess the total concentration and speciation variation of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn) during composting and vermicomposting of industrial sludge with different addition rations of rice husk biochar. Results indicated that pH, EC, total phosphorus (TP) and total potassium (TK) were increased and total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) were decreased during the composting of industrial sludge with biochar compared with the control (sludge without biochar). The addition of earthworm to the biochar-amended sludge further decreased pH and TOC but highly
