Loteprednol etabonate suspension 0.2% administered QID compared with olopatadine solution 0.1% administered BID in the treatment of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis: a multicenter, randomized, investigator-masked, parallel group study in Chinese patients.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC) is caused by seasonal allergens and usually manifests as ocular itching and bulbar conjunctival injection (redness). Treatment options for SAC include corticosteroids and dual-acting antihistamine and mast-cell stabilizers. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to compare the efficacy and tolerability of loteprednol etabonate (LE), a C-20 ester-based corticosteroid, with those of olopatadine, a dual-acting antihistamine mast-cell stabilizer, in Chinese patients. METHODS: This was a multicenter, randomized, investigator-masked, parallel group study. P

An evaluation of onset and duration of action of patanol (olopatadine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution 0.1%) compared to Claritin (loratadine 10 mg) tablets in acute allergic conjunctivitis in the conjunctival allergen challenge model.

PURPOSE: To compare the clinical efficacy of Patanol (olopatadine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution 0.1%) to Claritin (loratadine 10 mg) tablets, in the conjunctival allergen challenge model. METHODS: This was a randomized, double-masked, single center, contralateral controlled, antigen challenge model study. The concentration of allergen that elicited a positive response was determined at Visits 1 and 2 (itching > or = 2 and redness > or = 2 OU). At Visit 3, 29 subjects were randomized into two groups. Fifteen subjects received Claritin tablet and Patanol ophthalmic solution 0.1% in one eye

Diagnostics and new developments in the treatment of ocular allergies.

About 30% of people suffer from allergic symptoms, and 40% to 80% of them have eye symptoms. Atopic conjunctivitis is divided into seasonal allergic conjunctivitis and perennial allergic conjunctivitis. The treatment of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis is simple: antihistamines, anti-inflammatory agents, or cromoglycate. Perennial allergic conjunctivitis needs longer therapy with mast cell stabilizers and sometimes local steroids. Atopic keratoconjunctivitis requires long-term treatment of the lid eczema and keratoconjunctivitis. Vernal keratoconjunctivitis mainly affects children and young pe

Allergy and contact lenses.

Allergic conjunctivitis is a response to environmental allergens, as well as a genetic predisposition of the patient. It is classified as either acute (seasonal allergic conjunctivitis) or chronic (perennial allergic conjunctivitis, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, atopic keratoconjunctivitis and giant papillary conjunctivitis). The immune mechanism of these diseases will be discussed, as well as the allergic response to contact lens wear.

[Clinical picture, diagnosis and therapy of allergic eye diseases].

Ocular allergic disorders can be a component of systemic or local allergies. The importance of ocular allergy results from its incidence rather than from its severity, however, some of them are vision-threatening. The majority of ocular allergies affect the conjunctiva, eyelids and sometimes cornea that is exposed to the environment and is the place of interaction between allergens and immunocompetent cells. Different types of allergic disorders in the eye may have similar signs and symptoms, but each has its own pathognomonic characteristics, which help to diagnose, differentiate and choose t

Clinical Age-Specific Seasonal Conjunctivitis Patterns and Their Online Detection in Twitter, Blog, Forum, and Comment Social Media Posts.

PURPOSE: We sought to determine whether big data from social media might reveal seasonal trends of conjunctivitis, most forms of which are nonreportable. METHODS: Social media posts (from Twitter, and from online forums and blogs) were classified by age and by conjunctivitis type (allergic or infectious) using Boolean and machine learning methods. Based on spline smoothing, we estimated the circular mean occurrence time (a measure of central tendency for occurrence) and the circular variance (a measure of uniformity of occurrence throughout the year, providing an index of seasonality). Prostaglandin E2 and treatment outcome in pulp therapy of primary molars with carious exposures.

BACKGROUND: Allergic conjunctivitis is an ocular immune disease which affects the conjunctiva, eyelids, and cornea. Growing evidence implicates the gut microbiota in balancing and modulating immunity response, and in the pathogenesis of allergic disease. As a result, gut microbial imbalance could be a useful indicator for allergic conjunctivitis. From the perspective of predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM), clarifying the role of gut microbial imbalance in the development of allergic conjunctivitis could provide a window of opportunity for primary prediction, targeted preve

Ocular allergy: causes and therapeutic options.

Ocular allergic eye conditions are among the most common anterior eye problems encountered in optometric practice. There are six common forms of ocular allergy: seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, perennial allergic conjunctivitis, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, atopic keratoconjunctivitis, contact lens associated papillary conjunctivitis and contact ocular allergy. Here, we review the current understanding of the pathophysiology underlying ocular allergic conditions and describe the different causes and forms of allergic eye disease and different treatment options.

A simple and rapid diagnostic algorithm for the detection of ocular allergic diseases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of the present review is to describe currently available tools for the diagnosis of allergy with ocular involvement, and to define a simple and rapid diagnostic algorithm to facilitate identification of the various clinical types of ocular allergic diseases. RECENT FINDINGS: Evidence indicates that all clinical forms of allergic conjunctivitis share several common features including signs, symptoms and biochemical allergy markers. Nevertheless, to date there are no standardized criteria available to general practitioners and allergists that would allow them to c

Association between atopic dermatitis and conjunctivitis in adults: a population-based study in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The association between atopic dermatitis (AD) and conjunctivitis in adults has not been well established. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) and National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS) from 2002 to 2015 in order to evaluate the association between AD and conjunctivitis in U.S. adults. We performed multivariable logistic regression analyses adjusting for sociodemographic factors. RESULTS: An estimated total [95% CI] of 8,581,098 [7,592,037-9,570,160] weighted AD visits and 12,853,199,920 [12,808,2

Allergic ocular disorders: a spectrum of diseases.

Allergic eye disease is commonly encountered in clinical practice. The external eye is exposed to a host of environmental, cosmetic, and pharmacologic antigens. Although individual responses show a wide range of variability, a number of distinctive syndromes have emerged to define the spectrum of allergic eye disease. They consist of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC), perennial allergic conjunctivitis (PAC), atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC), vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC), giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC), and contact allergies involving the conjunctiva.

Atopic keratoconjunctivitis.

Atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) represents a disease usually classified under the term of allergic conjunctivitis together with seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC), perennial allergic conjunctivitis (PAC) and vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC). However, AKC and VKC have clinical and pathophysiological features quite different from SAC and PAC, in spite of some common markers of allergy. This article aims to review personal studies suggesting that allergic conjunctivitis (similarly to asthma, rhinitis and atopic dermatitis) is a heterogeneous disease entity with different preferential patho

Antiproteolytic activities found in human tears.

Human tears were found to inhibit the thiol-dependent protease, papain. Inhibitory activity in normal tears was compared with that in patients with blepharitis, infectious and allergic conjunctivitis, and herpes simplex. Activities lower than normal were found in some patients with infectious conjunctivitis and blepharitis. Higher than normal activities were found in patients with herpes simplex and allergic conjunctivitis. Differences from normal values were found to be statistically significant in allergic conjunctivitis and blepharitis by analyses of sample medians, means, and geometric mea

Neurotrophic factors and nerve growth factor in ocular allergy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: During allergic reaction, nervous and immune systems mutually interact through release of mediators, including neurotrophic factors and nerve growth factor (NGF). These mediators modulate allergic reaction through binding their receptors expressed by immune and structural cells and by stimulating neuropeptide release by nerves. The role of neuropeptides and NGF has been demonstrated in allergic asthma and rhinitis, and, to a lesser extent, in allergic conjunctivitis. The aim of this review are to elucidate the evidence of the role of NGF and neuropeptides in the pathogenesis
