Mycoplasma pneumoniae is an important bacterial agent that causes pneumonia in pediatric patients; it can also affect other organs or systems. Extrapulmonary manifestations include neurological, cardiac, hematologic, renal, gastrointestinal, osteoarticular, cutaneous, and ocular involvement. This report presents a 7-year-old male affected with cutaneous and retinal vasculitis due to M pneumoniae infection without pulmonary detection. The available literature on cutaneous vasculitis and M pneumoniae infection is also reviewed.

This chapter deals with Chlamydia -induced ocular and rheumatic diseases of the adult. All of these may follow a primary urogenital infection with Chlamydia trachomatis in genetically predisposed patients. Besides the infection with Chlamydia trachomatis, infections with Chlamydia pneumoniae and Chlamydia psittaci are also discussed as possible causative agents. Chlamydial conjunctivitis is frequently a secondary infection, and the organism is transferred from the urogenital tract to the eye by autoinoculation. Uveitis and reactive arthritis are believed to be triggered - among other infection

BACKGROUND: Clinical signs of active (inflammatory) trachoma are found in many children in the Solomon Islands, but the majority of these individuals have no serological evidence of previous infection with Chlamydia trachomatis. In Temotu and Rennell and Bellona provinces, ocular infections with C. trachomatis were seldom detected among children with active trachoma; a similar lack of association was seen between active trachoma and other common bacterial and viral causes of follicular conjunctivitis. Here, we set out to characterise patterns of gene expression at the conjunctivae of children

Neonatal conjunctivitis is one of the commonest infections encountered in the newborn. A prospective study was conducted on all babies born over a period of one year. No prophylactic ocular medication was instilled routinely in newborns. Babies developing purulent eye discharge were diagnosed to have conjunctivitis. Eye Swab from the neonates and maternal vaginal/cervical swabs were sent for culture. Chloromycetin eye drops were used for treatment and in case of no response, changed as per sensitivity report or to gentamicin eye drops. Oral erthromycin was given for dacryocystitis or when ther

This study aimed to document the pathological findings observed in a common buzzard (Buteo buteo insularum) from Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Atlantic Ocean), naturally infected with Buteo buteo herpesvirus (HV). Local authorities found the common buzzard alive, but it died after 10 days of specialized veterinary care. Postmortem investigation, including complete gross and histologic examination, immunohistochemistry, microbiology, and PCR, was performed. The animal presented necrotizing heterophilic and histiocytic bilateral conjunctivitis, stomatitis, pharyngitis, rhinitis, and sinusitis wi

A 16-year-old female Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus) died two days after recognition of conjunctivitis in the right eye, anorexia and depression. Gross necropsy revealed a thick pseudomembrane under the eyelid and hydropericardium. Histopathological examination revealed hepatocellular necrosis, sinusoidal and vascular congestion and infiltrated inflammatory cells. Infiltration by inflammatory cells was noted in the epicardium. The lungs had mild interstitial pneumonia with the extensive congestion within the capillaries of the air sacs. Tubular interstitial congestion and necrosis was noted in

Infectious retinitis postfebrile illness is known to be caused by chikungunya, dengue, West Nile virus, Bartonella, Lyme's disease, Rift Valley fever, rickettsia, Herpes viruses etc. Rickettsia is Gram-negative bacteria transmitted by arthropods vectors. Ocular involvement is common including conjunctivitis, keratitis, anterior uveitis, panuveitis, retinitis, retinal vascular changes, and optic nerve involvement. Retinitis lesions in rickettsia can occur because of an immunological response to the bacteria or because of direct invasion and proliferation of bacteria in the inner retina. We repo

Congenital nasolacrimal obstruction is a common disorder in infants that results in persistent tearing and may lead to infections, such as dacryocystitis, orbital cellulitis, and bacterial conjunctivitis. The true incidence of this disorder in healthy newborns remains controversial. The most frequently quoted number of 6% comes from a study of 200 consecutive live births in the 1940s in which nasolacrimal patency was assessed by the presence or absence of discharge on compression of the lacrimal sac. Estimates from other studies, which often use different criteria for diagnosis, vary considera

Sparfloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic commonly used for various bacterial corneal infections. Topical use of fluoroquinolones is considered to be safe leading to their widespread use. Common indications include blepharitis, conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers. However, unsupervised prolonged use is associated with deposition of crystalline material in the epithelial and anterior stromal layers of the cornea. These may be associated with significant visual symptoms including diminution of vision and glare/photophobia. We present a case of a 40-year-old man who was treated wi

The ability of the ocular surface to mount an immune response is in part attributed to a family of proteins called toll-like receptors (TLRs). The latter are evolutionary conserved receptors that recognize and respond to various microbes and endogenous ligands. In addition to their recognition function, TLR activation triggers a complex signal transduction cascade that induces the production of inflammatory cytokines and co-stimulatory molecules, thus initiating innate and adaptive immunity. Toll-like receptor expression at the ocular surface is modulated during infection (e.g. Herpes simplex,

Reactive arthritis (ReA) is a non-purulent joint inflammation that usually follows bacterial gastrointenstinal or urogenital infections. The classic presentation of ReA is characterized by an asymmetric arthritis usually in the lower limbs associated with urethritis, conjunctivitis and occurrence of other articular or extra-articular manifestations. ReA is classified as a type of seronegative spondyloarthopathy. Approximately 65-85% of patients with ReA are HLA-B27 positive. Regardless of the preceding infection, the clinical picture is similar, but management can differ according to the trigg

A 6-year-old Doberman bitch was presented for an acute onset of circling, hemiparesis and depression. Clinical examination revealed conjunctivitis, abdominal pain, anaemia, decreased facial sensation, decreased jaw, tongue and pharyngeal tone, decreased conscious proprioception, decreased flexor withdrawal reflexes, and abnormal hemiwalking and hemistanding. Pancytopaenia was evident on haematological evaluation. Bone marrow cytology revealed a bacterial infection. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis was normal. Despite antibiotic treatment, the dog died. On autopsy, widespread multifocal inflammator

The salient features of pulmonary tuberculosis in 263 Nigerian children are presented. Attention is drawn to the little known diagnostic presence of supraclavicular lymphadenopathy which is often accompanied by pulmonary tuberculosis. In the childhood population where early diagnosis of tuberculosis is sometimes difficult and depends mostly on a high index of suspicion, the finding of such a sign is highly significant and useful. Even though phlyctenular kerato-conjunctivitis has been reported to be caused more often by bacterial antigens other than tuberculosis, the experience in this part of

In this paper we evaluate the role of neutrophils in pneumonic plague. Splenic neutrophils from naïve BALB/c mice were found to reduce numbers of culturable Yersinia pestis strain GB in suspension. A murine, BALB/c, intranasal model of pneumonic plague was used in conjunction with in vivo neutrophil ablation, using the GR-1 antibody. This treatment reduced neutrophil numbers without affecting other leukocyte numbers. Neutrophil ablated mice exhibited increased bacterial colonisation of the lung 24h post infection. Furthermore, exposure of Y. pestis to human neutrophils resulted in a 5-fold red
