Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a life-threatening disease in which platelets are consumed and thrombotic microangiopathy develops in multiple organs due to a severe deficiency of the metalloproteinase, ADAMTS13. TTP should be suspected in any case associated with thrombocytopenia and hemolytic anemia; TTP can be diagnosed in cases of profound reduction in ADAMTS13 activity (to <10% of the normal level). Congenital TTP involves mutations in the ADAMTS13 gene, whereas acquired or autoimmune TTP results from the actions of inhibitory autoantibodies against the ADAMTS13 protein. Plas

The liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini is a serious health problem in Thailand. Infection is associated with cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), endemic among human populations in northeast and north Thailand where raw fish containing fluke metacercariae are frequently consumed. Recently, Thailand public health authorities have been organized to reduce morbidity and mortality particularly in the northeast through O. viverrini and CCA screening projects. Health modfication is one of activities included in this campaign, but systemic guidelines of modifying and developing health behavior for liver flukes

We designed a system to produce atmospheric hybrid cold-discharge plasma (HCP) based on microcorona discharge on a single dielectric barrier and applied it to inactivate microorganisms that commonly attach the rice seed husk. The cold-plasma treatment modified the surface of the rice seeds, resulting in accelerated germination and enhanced water imbibition. The treatment can operate under air-based ambient conditions without the need for a vacuum. The cold-plasma treatment completely inactivated pathogenic fungi and other microorganisms, enhancing the germination percentage and seedling qualit

Caffeine (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine) is daily and widely consumed in beverages and food and is mainly metabolized to 1,7-dimethylxanthine and 1-methylxanthine. Indirect clinical evidence suggests that 1-methylxanthine interacts with the organic anion transport system in the human kidney. In this study the effect of caffeine and its main metabolites on the human organic anion transporter 1 (hOAT1) was investigated using CHO cells overexpressing hOAT1. The uptake of 6-carboxyfluorescein into CHO(hOAT) cells was significantly inhibited by > or = 100 microM of 1-methylxanthine. Five hundred micromol

The black-bone chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is a breed of chicken that is commonly found in Thailand. This breed is known for having a number of black colored organs. Consumers have been notably attracted to the black-bone chicken breed for the characteristic darkness that is observed in many of its organs. However, the degree of darkness in all organs of the black-bone chicken is still in question. Importantly, there have not yet been any published reports on the distribution of melanin pigment in the organs of the black-bone chicken. This research study aims to examine the distribution

Quality control is imperative for Cannabis since the primary cannabinoids, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), elicit very different pharmacological effects. THC/CBD ratios are currently determined by techniques not readily accessible by consumers or dispensaries and which are impractical for use in the field by law-enforcement agencies. CuPc- and F16-CuPc-based organic thin-film transistors have been combined with a cannabinoid-sensitive chromophore for the detection and differentiation of THC and CBD. The combined use of these well-characterized and inexpensive p- and n-type

The field of 3D bioengineering proposes to effectively contribute to the manufacture of artificial multicellular organ/tissues and the understanding of complex cellular mechanisms. In this regard, 3D cell cultures comprise a promising bioengineering possibility for the alternative treatment of organ function loss, potentially improving patient life expectancies. Patients with end-stage disease, for example, could benefit from treatment until organ transplantation or even undergo organ function restoration. Currently, 3D bioprinters can produce tissues such as trachea cartilage or artificial sk

Sensations have emerged as an increasingly important topic in anthropological studies of health and disease. In this article, I draw from ethnographic research conducted among people living with selected rare inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs) and their caregivers in Poland, focusing specifically on recurrent rhabdomyolysis, a long-term complication that affects energy-consuming organs and muscles. Employing insights from sensorial and medical anthropology, I examine how people with IMDs and their caregivers, as parent-patient units, build anticipatory sensorial knowledge that enables them to

Alcohol (ethanol), presumably consumed as wine as far back as 7000 BC, is most likely the first addictive substance known to man. In modern days, its abuse leading to neurotoxicity and a myriad of organ damages, is of considerable social and medical concern. In the United States alone, approximately 180,000 people die yearly because of alcohol-related accidents and diseases. Given its ubiquitous nature, alcohol may interact with many cellular components. In this chapter, we specifically concentrate on its neurotoxic mechanisms involving glial cells and their role in neuroinflammation. Moreover

Allergic reactions in tattoos and permanent make-up are rare but they could be problematic. The clinical presentation and the histopathology are diverse and often confusing. Symptomatic treatment is frequently unsuccessful and invasive techniques can be required. Patch testing to identify the causative allergen is disappointing. The composition of the inks is complex; organic and inorganic colorants, auxiliary components and by-products must be considered. Physical factors such as ultraviolet and laser irradiation could play a role in haptenization of colorants in the skin. Clinical observatio

Patients with cirrhosis develop metabolic derangements of protein, carbohydrate, and lipid metabolism. Malnutrition is commonplace and is associated with morbidity and mortality. Specific nutrient deficiencies may occur and enteral or parenteral nutritional support may improve outcome in appropriately selected patients. Parenteral nutrition itself has been associated with hepatic dysfunction, although the preponderance of evidence suggests that hepatic dysfunction is more a function of the underlying disorder and malabsorption. Intravenously infused organic nutrients may be metabolized differe

A case of ingested cocaine is reported in which death must be classified as body packer syndrome although both the temporal relationship and the number of packets were atypical. The deceased, a consumer of hard drugs who smuggled for his own use, was found in his flat. He was resuscitated and survived for another four days in hospital. Only four intact drug packages were found in the upper gastro-intestinal tract. The concentrations of cocaine in blood and organs were relatively low but in a potentially lethal range. The case is presented, and its particularities as well as the option of induc

With the rising frequency of fungal infections, as well as increasing reports of resistance to antifungal agents, it is imperative that clinically applicable antifungal susceptibility testing be available. In 1997 the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards published standard guidelines for antifungal susceptibility testing of Candida sp and Cryptococcus neoformans with amphotericin B, flucytosine, fluconazole, itraconazole, and ketoconazole. Although the methods are standard, they are time consuming, can be difficult to interpret, and are approved only for testing limited organis

Brucellosis is an intracellular bacterial infection contracted by consuming raw milk or by contact with infected cattle. Neurobrucellosis is a rather rare manifestation of brucellosis and has protean clinical presentations characterized by meningoencephalitis, myelitis, myelopathies, subarachnoid hemorrhage and psychiatric manifestations. A depressed immune status is believed to be a risk factor for developing neurobrucellosis. We report a case of neurobrucellosis in a patient 13 years after a cadaveric renal transplantation. Even though a Brucella organism was not isolated from body fluids sh

The entorhinal (perforant path) projection to the dentate gyrus was labeled with an anterograde horseradish peroxidase method to test whether prenatal exposure to ethanol affected the normal development of afferent lamination. Mean ethanol consumption of the ethanol-consuming dams was 12.7 g/kg +/- 0.3 g per day during days 1-21 of gestation. Adult offspring of normal and pair-fed controls as well as ethanol-exposed rats were analyzed. Computer-assisted image analysis of the entorhinal terminal field organization revealed no permanent changes in the development of the afferent lamination patte

BACKGROUND: Garfish, (Belone belone) is a migratory pelagic fish that inhabits the waters of coastal Europe, North Africa, the North Sea, the Mediterranean Sea. Little information about garfish has been disseminated mainly because of its low abundance and its brief occurrence in various water bodies. Data is lacking on mercury compounds, particularly dangerous the toxic organic form of methylmercury (MeHg), which endangers the health of fish and their consumers.
METHODS: The research material was garfish caught off the southern Baltic Sea coast in Puck Bay during the spawning period. Total me

Fried dietary oils often cause adverse health effects due to altered chemical and nutritional properties. In the present study with mustard oil, the effect of repeated frying (180°C for 10 min, three times) on chemical characteristics and oral intake of raw and fried mustard oil (5 g/kg for 5 weeks) in Wistar rats were investigated. Repeated frying caused oxidation reactions and free fatty acid content in mustard oil. This fried oil feeding to rats increased serum LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and decreased HDL leading to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease accounted by significant increment

The health of freshwater and marine ecosystems is critical to life on Earth. The impact of solar UV-B radiation is one potential stress factor that can have a negative impact on the health of certain species within these ecosystems. Although there is a paucity of data and information regarding the effect of UV-B radiation on total ecosystem structure and function, several recent studies have addressed the effects on various species within each trophic level. Climate change, acid deposition, and changes in other anthropogenic stressors such as pollutants alter UV exposure levels in inland and c

Two experiments were performed to investigate the relationship between the expression of sodium appetite and the appearance of Fos-like immunoreactivity (Fos-IR) in the brain of rats. In the first experiment, rats were depleted of sodium by treatment with furosemide 24 h prior to sacrifice and without access to either food or sodium solution. Some rats had access to distilled water, and others had no fluids available during the 24 h. All of the furosemide-treated rats showed Fos-IR in both the subfornical organ (SFO) and around the organum vasculosum laminae terminalis (OVLT). Rats with access
