Chickens infected intravenously at 8 days after hatching with an avian osteopetrosis virus developed a severe, progressive anemia in the absence of osteopetrosis. The anemia was characterized as a pancytopenia, in which erythrocytes, granulocytes, and thrombocytes decreased concomitantly. Serum bilirubin levels were normal, whereas erythrocytes from infected chickens demonstrated a slightly elevated osmotic fragility. Seven sporadic cases of ;seronegative glandular fever' have been examined in detail; five of the patients were adults aged more than 30, two were children. None showed evidence of ;incomplete' or heat-labile sheep cell agglutinins, but in three very weak, though otherwise typical, glandular fever agglutinins were detected. OBJECTIVES: Increased erythrocytic osmotic fragility and splenomegaly have been reported in anemic Abyssinian and Somali cats. Here we report on this condition in anemic domestic shorthair cats and two other breeds, and describe common features of the clinicopathological profiles, management and outcomes.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) ws described in 1987 as a new technique for immunohematology testing. The original paper described its use in detection and identification of weakly reactive antibodies. PEG is used as an additive to enhance reactivity and to reduce incubation time when testing for unexpected antibodies. Quantitation of red cell associated IgG in 62 Gambian patients with P. falciparum malaria and 23 normal adult controls was carried out, using a purified 125I-labelled anti IgG.
