Navigating the Gap: An Examination of Funder Rhetoric and Reality Regarding Community-Research Partnerships.

Partnerships between researchers and consumers-specifically, people who use drugs in the context of our research co-production-can significantly enhance the relevance and impact of research. Funders increasingly emphasise the value of community-researcher collaborations, yet translating this commitment into effective practice remains challenging. This commentary draws from our experience in developing an application for a collaborative grant with the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in Australia, focusing on issues that impact people who use drugs. We reflect on four key in

FAIR data gaps and collaboration willingness among hemoglobinopathy research centers.

Hemoglobinopathies, including thalassemia syndromes and sickle cell disease, require interoperable and well-annotated data systems to support multi-center research and coordinated care. However, existing datasets rarely adhere to the Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) principles. We conducted a cross-sectional, web-based survey (September 2024-March 2025) among data professionals, clinicians, and researchers within the HELIOS network to evaluate data management practices, metadata use, standards adoption, and collaboration readiness. Forty-four eligible institutional resp

Connection and collaboration: Reflections on power, safety, and risk.

Occupational therapy in Australia is experiencing growth and demand in ways that have not been seen before in this country. There are over 32,000 registered occupational therapists and more than 7000 students studying occupational therapy at one of 50 accredited programs in 26 different universities. Indeed, I contend that occupational therapy is more valued and in demand than at any other time in its history. There is the opportunity for the profession to capitalise on the current value and demand, yet many occupational therapists are reporting distress and burnout and a sense of disconnectio

Bridging the Gap: Collaborative Care Models Between Podiatrists and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists to Improve Outcomes in Diabetes-Related Foot Complications.

This article reviews collaborative care models integrating podiatrists and certified diabetes care and education specialists (CDCESs) to prevent and manage diabetes-related foot complications. By combining podiatric expertise in lower extremity assessment and intervention with CDCES-led self-management education, these interdisciplinary approaches improve outcomes such as ulcer prevention, limb preservation, and health care cost savings. The article discusses barriers to effective collaboration and outlines clinical, educational, and policy strategies to enhance integrated care. Expanding acce

Context of data sharing practices in collaborative human genomic research in low and middle income countries: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The collection and aggregation of individual genomic data into large-scale repositories is now a common approach in biomedical research. Funding agencies increasingly require researchers to include data sharing plans in new project proposals, unless there are strong, clearly justified reasons. While sharing human genomic data promotes scientific discovery, innovation, and transparency, it also raises significant ethical, legal, and social concerns (ELSI). This review collated evidence on data sharing practices, context, facilitators and barriers in collaborative human genomic resea

Evolution of noisy learning in games.

People make strategic decisions many times a day-during negotiations, when coordinating actions with others, or when choosing partners for cooperation. The resulting dynamics can be studied with learning theory and evolutionary game theory. These frameworks explore how people adapt their decisions over time, in light of how effective their strategies have been. The outcomes of such learning processes depend on how sensitive individuals are to the performance of their strategies. When they are more sensitive, they systematically favor strategies they deem more successful. When they are less sen

The influence of task demands on joint action planning.

Joint actions require co-actors to coordinate their individual contributions to achieve joint goals. One proposal is that such coordination is supported by joint action plans. However, it remains unclear whether joint action planning is generally prioritized, or whether it is flexibly engaged depending on task demands. Here, we investigated the factors that influence co-actors' propensity to use the individual- and joint-level planning. Pairs of participants performed a joint task in which pre-cues provided information about individual contributions, the relation between contributions, or both

Transformation of an interprofessional learning strategy through organizational change principles and patient partnership.

Interprofessional learning (IPL) is required for health profession students to develop appropriate collaborative competencies. In 2024, in response to accreditation recommendations and evolving best practices, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), University of Medicine & Health Sciences undertook a comprehensive redesign of its original IPL strategy. Guided by Kotter's eight-step model for organizational change, an interprofessional leadership team of academic staff, student, and patient partners reviewed and updated their approach to IPL. This new strategy integrates formal, infor

[Reinventing Care: Collaborative Innovation at the Heart of Mental Health Between Interdisciplinary Practices and the Voices of Patient Partners].

Collaboration with patient partners (PP) in mental health has become an essential practice, spurred by public policy and participatory research methods. Alliance en Santé Mentale du Québec, inspired by the principles of open science, actively promotes this involvement within the Centre de recherche de l'Institut universitaire en santé mentale de Montréal (CR-IUSMM). To mark the occasion of the CR-IUSMM's 30th anniversary, a committee of PPs conducted a series of interviews with key stakeholders involved with the Centre to explore their experiences, challenges, and perspectives regarding the pa

Asymmetric prefrontal representations for leader-follower dynamics.

Across species, cooperative behaviour is often organized by distinct social roles such as leaders and followers1, yet the neural mechanisms that support these emergent role dynamics remain unclear. Here we introduce a mouse paradigm that captures leader-follower dynamics during cooperation. In this paradigm, stable social roles emerge through reciprocal interaction and predict learning speed. Disrupting the activity of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), particularly in followers, impairs cooperation and induces complementary shifts in how animals weigh self- and partner-related cues during d

INTRODUCTION: Mental Health Awareness Weeks (SISM, Semaines d’information sur la santé mentale) are an annual initiative aimed at promoting mental health among the general population across French territories. Through post-film discussions, exhibitions, and workshops, participants receive information, reflect on social representations, and identify individual and collective resources. These initiatives are led by diverse stakeholders organized within local SISM collectives. Given the growing number of events and participating groups, this study aims to analyze collaboration

Helene: The whole community approach-North Carolina pulls together in the face of disaster.

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, North Carolina has seen its people come together in extraordinary ways, embodying the spirit of the "whole community" approach. This approach emphasizes the collaboration of various stakeholders, including local residents, businesses, government agencies, and nonprofits, to enhance disaster response and recovery efforts. By involving everyone, it ensures that the diverse needs of the community are met efficiently. This collective effort fosters resilience and strengthens the community's ability to bounce back from adversity. This disaster, of biblical proportio

A mixed methods systematic review of interprofessional education and collaborative practice in rural healthcare settings.

Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (IPECP) involves healthcare workers and/or students from at least two professions working alongside patients, to improve the quality of healthcare provided. IPECP implementation in rural areas, however, lags due to limited resources and workforce shortages. This systematic review was undertaken to identify the enablers and barriers to the implementation of IPECP initiatives in rural healthcare settings. The JBI mixed methods review methodology and PRISMA guidelines were followed. Studies included peer-reviewed articles of IPECP initiatives

Using a collaborative approach to reduce falls in older people's adult mental health wards in a local health board in Wales.

Between April 2020 and March 2021, the number of fall-related emergency admissions in England for adults over 65 years was 1933 per 100 000 people. Adult patients in hospital may be at risk of falling for many reasons including a history of falls, being medically unwell, dementia or delirium, the effects of their treatment or medication, poor mobility, visual and other sensory impairments along with their general well-being. Research has shown that falls can be reduced by 20%-30% through multifactorial assessments and interventions. The aim of these assessments and interventions is to identify

From information free-riding to information sharing: how have humans solved the cooperative dilemma at the heart of cumulative cultural evolution?

Cumulative cultural evolution, where populations accumulate ever-improving knowledge, technologies and social customs, is arguably a unique feature of human sociality and responsible for our species' ecological dominance of the planet. However, at the heart of cumulative cultural evolution is a cooperative dilemma. Assuming asocial learning is more costly than social learning, social learners can act as 'information free-riders' by copying innovations from asocial learners without paying the cost. This cost asymmetry will reduce innovation, inhibiting cumulative culture. Innovators might respo

Collaborative imagination synchronizes representations of the future and fosters social connection in the present.

From close friends to people on a first date, imagining a shared future appears fundamental to relationships. Yet, no previous research has conceptualized the act of imagination as a socially constructed process that affects how connected we feel to others. The present studies provide a framework for investigating imagination as a collaborative process in which individuals cocreate shared representations of hypothetical events-what we call collaborative imagination. Across two preregistered studies (N = 244), we provide evidence that collaborative imagination of a shared future fosters social

Mutual cooperation gives you a stake in your partner's welfare, especially if they are irreplaceable.

Why do we care so much for friends-much more than one might predict from reciprocity alone? According to a recent theory, organisms who cooperate with each other come to have a stake in each other's well-being: A good cooperator is worth protecting-even anonymously if necessary-so they can be available to cooperate in the future. Here, we present three experiments showing that reciprocity creates a stake in a partner's well-being, such that people are willing to secretly pay to protect good cooperative partners, if doing so keeps those partners available for future interaction. Participants pl

Efficacy of life goals collaborative care for bipolar disorder: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder remains a disabling mental health condition despite the availability of effective treatments. Collaborative chronic care models (CCMs) represent an evidence-based way to structure care for conditions like bipolar disorder. Life Goals Collaborative Care (LGCC) was designed specifically for bipolar disorder, featuring psychoeducation alongside collaborative components (e.g. nurse care management or expert psychiatric consultation). Despite the use of Life Goals across health systems, a systematic review summarizing its effectiveness has never been conducted. METHODS

The probabilistic pool punishment proportional to the difference of payoff outperforms previous pool and peer punishment.

The public goods game is a multiplayer version of the prisoner's dilemma game. In the public goods game, punishment on defectors is necessary to encourage cooperation. There are two types of punishment: peer punishment and pool punishment. Comparing pool punishment with peer punishment, pool punishment is disadvantageous in comparison with peer punishment because pool punishment incurs fixed costs especially if second-order free riders (those who invest in public goods but do not punish defectors) are not punished. In order to eliminate such a flaw of pool punishment, this study proposes the p
