The Mediated Portrayal of Intimate Partner Violence in True Crime Podcasts: Strangulation, Isolation, Threats of Violence, and Coercive Control.

In this directed qualitative content analysis of four season-long true crime podcasts, the researcher examined how different types of intimate partner violence (IPV) were portrayed. Across the podcasts, controlling behaviors, emotional abuse, and coercive control were commonly depicted. Physical violence was not the most common form of abuse depicted, but it was presented in sensationalistic ways-with a pointed focus on strangulation and bruising. Overall, the podcasts provided a much more realistic portrayal of IPV at the individual level than traditional news sources, yet did not go far enou…

Fc-gamma receptors and S100A8/A9 cause bone erosion during rheumatoid arthritis. Do they act as partners in crime?

Bone erosion is one of the central hallmarks of RA and is caused by excessive differentiation and activation of osteoclasts. Presence of aut … y promote osteoclast function. Therefore, IC-activated FcγRs and S100A8/A9 might act as partners in crime to stimulate inflammation and osteoclasts differentiation and function, thereby stimulating bone erosion. This review discusses the separate roles of ICs, FcγRs and alarmins in bone erosion and sheds new light on the possible interplay between them, …

On hate crime victimization: Rates, types, and links with suicide risk among sexual orientation minority special interest group members.

Hate crimes remain pressing traumatic events for sexual orientation minority adults. Previous literature documents patterns in which hate crime victimization is associated with elevated risk for poor mental health. The present paper held 2 aims to advance literature. First, we investigated the rates and types of hate crime victimization among sexual orientation minority adults. Second, adopting a mental health amplification risk model, we evaluated whether symptoms of depression, impulsivity, or post-traumatic stress exacerbated the hate crime victimization-suicide risk link. Participants were…

Drug use, street crime, and sex-trading among cocaine-dependent women: implications for public health and criminal justice policy.

The linkages between the sex-for-crack exchanges, prostitution, and rising rates of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases among cocaine-dependent women have been well documented. As crack began to disappear from the headlines during the 1990s, however, it was assumed by many that crack had fallen on hard times in the street drug culture. Within this context, this article examines the extent to which crack has remained primary in the culture of cocaine-dependent women. Data are drawn from a study of 708 cocaine-dependent women in Miami, Florida, during the years 1994 to 1996, and qualitat

Examination of the relationships among drug use, emotional/psychological problems, and crime among youths entering a juvenile detention center.

Urine testing and confidential interviews of youths entering a juvenile detention center in a southeastern city produced some striking results in regard to their drug use, delinquent behavior, and emotional/psychological problems. Recent users of marijuana/hashish and cocaine had higher rates of referral to juvenile court for property and drug offenses than nonusers. The results suggest that interviewing and urine testing of youthful detainees for drug use at the point of entry into secure detention is a promising method for screening youngsters with histories of delinquent behavior. OxyContin reformulation and drug-related-arrest rates, property-related crimes, child maltreatment and food pantry participation.

BACKGROUND: Many policies at the federal and state level have been implemented to curb the opioid crisis. A signature policy, the OxyContin reformulation, was introduced in 2010. However, an increasing body of research has documented negative impacts of the OxyContin reformulation, such as a rise in heroin use and overdose deaths. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates other unintended impacts of the OxyContin reformulation on the arrest rates for drug abuse violations, the arrest rates for drug offenses, the rates for property related crimes, child maltreatment and food pantry participation rate. …

Young offenders in forensic institutions in the Netherlands after committing serious crimes: Contribution of mandatory treatment and reduction of reincarceration.

BACKGROUND: In the Netherlands, young offenders who have been convicted of a particularly serious offence may be subjected to a so-called 'Placement in an Institution for Juveniles' (PIJ) measure if they are considered to pose a high ongoing risk to public safety. They form a rarely studied distinct group. Treatment in specialist forensic custodial institutions for young people (FYCI) is an intervention of last resort and costly. The most serious young offenders tend to be the hardest to rehabilitate while preventing further offending. Treatment is focussed on reducing risk of harm as well as

The material, moral, and affective worlds of dealing and crime among young men entrenched in an inner city drug scene.

A large body of previous research has elucidated how involvement in drug dealing and crime among marginalized urban youth who use drugs is shaped by the imperatives of addiction and survival in the context of poverty. However, a growing body of research has examined how youth's involvement in these activities is shaped by more expansive desires and moralities. In this paper, we examine the material, moral, and affective worlds of loosely gang affiliated, street level dealing and crime among one group of young men in Vancouver, Canada. Drawing on longitudinal interviews with 44 young men from 2…

A longitudinal analysis of the impact of child custody loss on drug use and crime among a sample of African American mothers.

UNLABELLED: This study examines the influence of child custody loss on drug use and crime among a sample of African American mothers. Two types of custody loss are examined: informal custody loss (child living apart from mother but courts not involved), and official loss (child removed from mother's care by authorities). METHODS: Using data from 339 African American women, longitudinal random coefficient models analyzed the effects of each type of custody loss on subsequent drug use and crime. RESULTS: indicated that both informal and official custody loss predicted increased drug use, and i…

The role of substance use and morality in violent crime - a qualitative study among imprisoned individuals in opioid maintenance treatment.

BACKGROUND: Opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) is regarded as a crime control measure. Yet, some individuals are charged with violent criminal offenses while enrolled in OMT. This article aims to generate nuanced knowledge about violent crime among a group of imprisoned, OMT-enrolled individuals by exploring their understandings of the role of substances in violent crime prior to and during OMT, moral values related to violent crime, and post-crime processing of their moral transgressions. METHODS: Twenty-eight semi-structured interviews were undertaken among 12 OMT-enrolled prisoners. The in…

Forensic applications of the skin microbiome: a structured narrative review of donor association, contact inference, and crime-scene reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Skin-associated microbial communities are individualized, anatomically structured, temporally dynamic, and readily transferred to contacted surfaces. These properties have generated interest in the skin microbiome as complementary forensic evidence when conventional human DNA or fingerprint evidence is limited. METHODS: We conducted a structured narrative review guided by the Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles (SANRA). PubMed/MEDLINE was searched from database inception through 2 August 2026, and reference lists of eligible studies and recent reviews were examin
