Coprevalence of bulimia with alcohol abuse and smoking among Japanese male and female high school students.

Bulimia nervosa (bulimia) is often concomitant with alcohol and other substance abuse. To investigate the coprevalence of bulimia with alcohol abuse and smoking, we surveyed 2597 male and female Japanese high school students and obtained a group of bulimic students who fulfilled four of five DSM-III-R bulimia nervosa criteria and a control group who reported no binge-eating experience. Comparison of the groups showed significantly more alcohol abuse for both male and female bulimic students than for the non-bulimic control group. The male and female adolescents with symptoms of bulimia were si

Tourette's syndrome in New Zealand. A postal survey.

It has become increasingly evident that Tourette's syndrome (TS) is not as rare as was once thought and substantial cohorts from various parts of the world have been reported. The clinical characteristics seem independent of culture as they appear to occur with some degree of uniformity irrespective of the country of origin. We investigated the point prevalence and report the clinical characteristics of TS in New Zealand. Forty probable cases were identified and the symptoms were similar to those described in cohorts from other parts of the world.

Alcohol consumption and blood pressure: a comparison of native Japanese to American men.

We compared the cross-sectional association of alcohol consumption with blood pressure in 810 Japanese men (JM) living in Tokyo and 946 white men (WM) living in New York. Mean systolic (JM and WM, p less than 0.001) and diastolic blood pressure (JM, p less than 0.002; WM, p less than 0.001) were associated with alcohol consumption in both groups. Compared to abstainers, the heaviest drinkers had the highest systolic (JM, p = 0.001; WM, p less than 0.01) and diastolic (JM, p less than 0.002; WM, p less than 0.05) blood pressures. The relation of blood pressure to alcohol intake was J-shaped in

Temporal stability of depression symptom networks across cultures: Longitudinal analysis of MIDUS and MIDJA.

BACKGROUND: The network approach to psychopathology conceptualizes mental disorders as systems with causally interacting symptoms. While the temporal stability of symptom networks has been examined in single-culture samples, no research has compared stability patterns across cultural contexts. METHODS: Using longitudinal data from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS; N = 673) and Midlife in Japan (MIDJA; N = 197), we estimated depression networks using four CES-D subscales (Depressed Affect, Positive Affect, Somatic Symptoms, Interpersonal Problems) at two time points (T1 and T2). Tempora

Developmental Unity and Cultural Variation in Forms of Metarepresentational False Belief Understanding.

Around age four, children in urban, post-industrial societies begin to understand the subjectivity of beliefs and other mental states: they can be true or false, and they are aspectual, representing situations under specific descriptions. These two insights have been found to emerge in tandem, suggesting a shift toward a metarepresentational Theory of Mind. However, as evidence for this shift comes primarily from formally educated, urban, post-industrial societies, its broader generalizability remains speculative. Moreover, standard pretense-heavy false belief tasks may bias conclusions drawn

Do you let me symptomatize? The potential role of cultural values in cross-national variability of mental disorders' prevalence.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders may show inherent cross-national variability in their prevalence. A considerable number of meta-analyses attribute this heterogeneity to the methodological diversity in published epidemiological studies. Cultural values are characteristically not assessed in meta-regression models as potential covariates. AIM: Our aim was to conduct a meta-regression analysis to explore to what extent certain cultural values and immigration rates (as indicator of cultural diversity) might be associated with the cross-national heterogeneity of prevalence rates. METHOD: To minimize

Age and gender differences in self-esteem-A cross-cultural window.

Research and theorizing on gender and age differences in self-esteem have played a prominent role in psychology over the past 20 years. However, virtually all empirical research has been undertaken in the United States or other Western industrialized countries, providing a narrow empirical base from which to draw conclusions and develop theory. To broaden the empirical base, the present research uses a large Internet sample (N = 985,937) to provide the first large-scale systematic cross-cultural examination of gender and age differences in self-esteem. Across 48 nations, and consistent with pr

Difficulties in detecting behavioral symptoms of frontotemporal lobar degeneration across cultures.

Cross-cultural studies of neurodegenerative disorders are especially important when the disease in question is difficult to diagnose, particularly if symptoms of the illness include behavioral disturbances that may be interpreted differently in different cultures. One such disease is frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), an early-age-of-onset dementia that disproportionately affects social behavior. We report the demographic and neuropsychologic characteristics of more than 300 patients diagnosed with FTLD in the United States, Greece, and Turkey. We find that patients with the frontal var

Social Media Discourse on Breast Cancer Screening Barriers in Japanese and English: Cross-Sectional Infodemiology Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite clinical advances, breast cancer screening adherence remains stagnant in Japan (<50%) compared with the United States (>70%). Understanding distinct cross-cultural barriers is essential; however, traditional methodologies often fail to capture visceral, real-world individual experiences and hidden deterrents to screening. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to characterize and compare cross-cultural informatics profiles of barriers to breast cancer screening across Japanese-language and English-language social media discourse. METHODS: We developed an automated natural language pr

Working ability, Location, Intensity, Days of Pain, Dysmenorrhea (WaLIDD): cross-cultural adaptation, reliability, and validity of the Turkish version.

BACKGROUND: Dysmenorrhea is a gynecological condition that causes painful menstrual cramps in the uterus, most commonly seen in women of reproductive age. The aim was to perform the reliability and validity of the Turkish Working Ability, Location, Intensity, Days of Pain, Dysmenorrhea (WaLIDD) score for evaluating individuals with dysmenorrhea. The evaluation of the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the WaLIDD tool in the Turkish population is essential to ensure its accuracy, consistency, and cultural relevance in assessing the impact of dysmenorrhea. METHODS: Cross-section

Psychometric properties of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) across cross-cultural subgroups, genders, and sexual orientations: Findings from the International Sex Survey (ISS).

INTRODUCTION: Despite being a widely used screening questionnaire, there is no consensus on the most appropriate measurement model for the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). Furthermore, there have been limited studies on its measurement invariance across cross-cultural subgroups, genders, and sexual orientations. AIMS: The present study aimed to examine the fit of different measurement models for the AUDIT and its measurement invariance across a wide range of subgroups by country, language, gender, and sexual orientation. METHODS: Responses concerning past-year alcohol use f

Cross-cultural French-Canadian adaptation and psychometric assessment of the Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life (ISYQOL) questionnaire.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) can significantly alter the quality of life of adolescents. Some of the available questionnaires in French measuring the quality of life in this population show weak psychometric properties. The newly developed Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life (ISYQOL) questionnaire promises better properties. PURPOSE: To provide a French-Canadian version of the ISYQOL and to verify its psychometric characteristics. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective validation of a cross-cultural adaptation of the ISYQOL questionnaire. PATIENT SAMPLE: A total of 111 participants with

Depersonalization and individualism: the effect of culture on symptom profiles in panic disorder.

It has been proposed that highly individualistic cultures confer vulnerability to depersonalization. To test this idea, we carried out a comprehensive systematic review of published empirical studies on panic disorder, which reported the frequency of depersonalization/derealization during panic attacks. It was predicted that the frequency of depersonalization would be higher in Western cultures and that a significant correlation would be found between the frequency of depersonalization and individualism scores of the participant countries. As predicted, the frequency of depersonalization durin

Epidemiologic data on Asperger disorder.

In 1944, Asperger described a syndrome that was subsequently given his name, although there is evidence from earlier European literature that clinical descriptions matching this disorder were available in the 1920s. Asperger's work was largely ignored until the seminal article by Wing, however, which led to a resurgence of interest in this diagnostic concept. Asperger disorder (AD) was only introduced as a separate diagnostic category in the latest revisions of ICD-10 and DSM-IV. Epidemiologic research on this disorder has only started in recent years and therefore data are still scarce on the

Suicide attempts in bipolar patients.

BACKGROUND: Between 25% to 50% of patients with bipolar disorder make suicide attempts during their lives, but there are some controversies about factors related to suicide attempts in this group of patients. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between suicide attempts and the predictive factors previously described in the literature. METHOD: The sample included all 169 patients with DSM-III-R bipolar I disorder identified in a delimited area (northern Spain). An epidemiological study on severe mental retardation among schoolchildren in Bologna, Italy.

The prevalence, causal origin of and impairments associated with severe mental retardation (SMR) were investigated among all school-age children (six to 13 years) living in the city of Bologna, Italy. 90 children (57 boys, 33 girls) with IQs less than or equal to 50 were identified. The prevalence of SMR was 4.2 per 1000 for males, 2.5 per 1000 for females and 3.4 per 1000 for both sexes. Causal origin was prenatal for 33.3 per cent, perinatal for 14.4 per cent, combined pre- and perinatal for 5.6 per cent and postnatal for 13.3 per cent. Another 12.3 per cent of the children with IQs less tha
