It is a review of the literature plus the description of the three cases of the skin and visceral cryptococcosis diagnosed after the histologic examination of surgical and biopsy material. As clinical diagnosis is difficult, the microscopy of glasses-"prints" from damaged organs stained with a black dye for a rapid revealing of cryptococci is recommended. An important role of hormonal preparations and antibiotics withdrawal is pointed out as their use activates the fungal flora.

The ecology of Cryptococcus neoformans and the epidemiology of cryptococcosis are reviewed. Two varieties of C. neoformans have been recognized. C. neoformans variety neoformans has been found in nature worldwide, primarily in association with bird droppings, although nonavian sources have also been found. Most cases of human cryptococcosis are caused by this variety. C. neoformans var. gattii has recently been isolated in nature in association with Eucalyptus trees. Infections caused by this variety occur mainly in tropical and subtropical regions. Because exposure to C. neoformans is probabl…

We studied the efficacy of itraconazole, a new oral triazole, in 33 patients (32 were immunocompromised) with cryptococcosis. Diagnoses included cryptococcal meningitis (24 patients), cryptococcemia (19 patients), cryptococcuria (4 patients), osteomyelitis (1 patient), pulmonary cryptococcosis (1 patient), and soft-tissue cryptococcosis (2 patients). Twenty-six patients had the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, and 4 were transplant recipients. Therapy (200 mg two times per day) was monitored by clinical response, culture, and cryptococcal antigen testing. Cryptococcemia was abolished in 10 …

Isolated cutaneous cryptococcosis developed in a 62-year-old white man with an idiopathic deficiency of T-lymphocytes. The patient was healthy, except for the cutaneous infection, and displayed no other evidence of an immunodeficiency disorder. An immunologic workup should be conducted in all patients with cryptococcal infection, regardless of their apparent health status.

PURPOSE: To report multimodal imaging findings in two cases of AIDS-related cryptococcal chorioretinitis associated with uveitis and vasculitis.
METHODS: Findings on clinical examination, color fundus photography, fluorescein and indocyanine green angiographies, and optical coherence tomography. Patients. Both patients were diagnosed with Cryptococcus neoformans meningitis in the setting of untreated HIV infection with CD4+ T cell count < 100/mm3. Ocular manifestations occurred during the course of the antifungal therapy for meningitis.
RESULTS: In both cases, fundus showed vitritis. Fluores

BACKGROUND: A better understanding of the epidemiology of cryptococcal infection in HIV-negative individuals is an international research interest. Immune dysfunction in diabetes mellitus (DM) significantly increases the risk of acquiring and reactivation of infection due to Cryptococcus neoformans. Risk factors and outcomes of cryptococcosis in DM are not well documented.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the clinical characteristics and outcomes of cryptococcal infections in persons living with DM.
METHODS: MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library databa…
