Both the numbers and function of natural killer (NK) cells in 60 were evaluated in asbestos cement workers grouped by smoking history and chest roentgenogram findings (ILO profusion scores less than 1/0 or greater than or equal to 1/0, or isolated pleural plaques). While investigating sera for possible antibodies to TL-like determinants, multiparous sera were selected that had specific cytotoxic reactivity against phytohaemagglutinin (PHA)-activated lymphocytes of certain individuals and were negative against unstimulated T or B cells from the same donor. The reactivity patterns were not correlated to any HLA specificities. However, in an indirect immunofluorescence assay with flow cytometry, these same sera had strong specific monomorphic reactivity to PHA-activated lymphocytes from all the individuals in the panel. In this study, 118 consecutive adult patients with supratentorial gliomas underwent preoperative immunological monitoring, with particular regard to B-lymphocyte and T-lymphocyte markers. Most patients were treated surgically and with radiotherapy. Three months later, they were readmitted for postoperative immunological investigation and follow-up control. The case of a 57-year-old man with lymphadenopathy fever, splenomegaly, and polyclonal gammopathy is described. The difficult clinical course, the short lived response to cytotoxic treatment, the frequent infections, the immunologic abnormality, and the histologic findings in lymph node biopsy and postmortem material justified our diagnosis of angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy with dysproteinemia, a new entity described recently.
