Clinical correlates of frontal intermittent rhythmic delta activity (FIRDA).

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clinical correlates of frontal intermittent rhythmic delta activity (FIRDA). METHODS: we prospectively assessed all EEG studies recorded in our center over 3 months for the presence of frontal intermittent rhythmic delta activity (FIRDA). The FIRDA group was compared with a randomly selected control group from among EEGs recorded during the same period. Comparisons among FIRDA and non-FIRDA groups were performed using uni- and multi-variate analyses. RESULTS: We found 36 patients with FIRDA among 559 EEG recordings (6%); the control group consisted of 80 subjec

Characterization of lymphocyte subsets over a 24-hour period in Pineal-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (PALT) in the chicken.

BACKGROUND: Homeostatic trafficking of lymphocytes in the brain has important relevance to the understanding of CNS disease processes. The pineal gland of the chicken contains large accumulations of lymphocytes that suggest an important role related to homeostatic circadian neuro-immune interactions. The purpose of this initial study was to characterize the lymphocyte subsets in the pineal gland and quantitate the distribution and frequency of lymphocyte phenotypes at two time points over the 24-hour light:dark cycle. RESULTS: PALT comprised approximately 10% of the total pineal area. Image a

Reversible delayed posthypoxic leukoencephalopathy.

Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy may cause early deep white matter abnormalities on MR imaging that usually progress to include gray matter and basal ganglia change. Toxic leukoencephalopathy due to heroin inhalation predominantly causes cerebellar and posterior cerebral radiologic change. Both conditions rarely present clinically and radiologically in a delayed manner with subsequent recovery. We report a case of reversible delayed posthypoxic/toxic leukoencephalopathy with no clinical or radiologic evidence of gray matter insult.

Assessment of Gastric Myoelectrical Activity in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Using Electrogastrography.

Background Gastric motility problems are a commonly overlooked complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Diabetic autonomic neuropathy and dysfunction of the interstitial cells of Cajal are believed to be the main underlying mechanisms. Electrogastrography (EGG) is a simple, noninvasive method for studying gastric electrical activity. There are limited data on gastric electrical abnormalities in Indian patients with T2DM. This study was designed to estimate the prevalence of such abnormalities and to examine whether they are related to long-term glycemic control and duration of diabetes

Data-driven retrieval of population-level EEG features and their role in neurodegenerative diseases.

Electrophysiologic disturbances due to neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Lewy Body disease are detectable by scalp EEG and can serve as a functional measure of disease severity. Traditional quantitative methods of EEG analysis often require an a-priori selection of clinically meaningful EEG features and are susceptible to bias, limiting the clinical utility of routine EEGs in the diagnosis and management of neurodegenerative disorders. We present a data-driven tensor decomposition approach to extract the top 6 spectral and spatial features representing commonly known

Does more sleep matter? Differential effects of NREM- and REM-dominant sleep on sleepiness and vigilance.

We investigated effects of NREM and REM predominant sleep periods on sleepiness and psychomotor performances measured with visual analog scales and the psychomotor vigilance task, respectively. After one week of stable sleep-wake rhythms, 18 healthy sleepers slept 3hours of early sleep and 3hours of late sleep, under polysomnographic control, spaced by two hours of sustained wakefulness between sleep periods in a within subjects split-night, sleep interruption protocol. Power spectra analysis was applied for sleep EEG recordings and sleep phase-relative power proportions were computed for six

Effectiveness of neurofeedback training as a treatment for opioid-dependent patients.

Neurofeedback (NF) training has been employed as a therapeutic method in substance-dependence disorder over the last three decades. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effectiveness of this method on improvement of comorbid neuro-psychological syndromes in opioid-dependence disorder. Psychopathological and craving dimensions and brain activity signals of 20 opioid dependent patients were measured using Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), Heroin Craving Questionnaire (HCQ), and Quantitative Electroencephalography (QEEG). All the patients were undergoing pharmacotherapy. The

Shoulder prostheses treating cuff tear arthropathy: a comparative biomechanical study.

UNLABELLED: Painful cuff tear arthropathy (CTA) affects the independence of the elderly. Surgical treatment often consists of joint replacement, the functional outcome of which remains variable. Knowledge of the biomechanical properties of the different prosthetic designs can guide the orthopaedic surgeon in the choice of implant to predict its clinical result. A 3-D computer model of the glenohumeral joint is used to analyse the moment of the deltoid muscle in the scapular plane. A geometrical 3-D ball-and-socket model of the shoulder joint was used to calculate (1) the angle-force relationsh

[Changes in the gonadotrophins, in the prolactin and in the sexual steroid levels throughout the normal menstrual cycle (author's transl)].

The authors describe the hormone changes that occur in a normal woman throughout the menstrual cycle. These is no circadian rhythm in the release of gonadotrophins after puberty. LH is liberated in a pulsatile way throughout the day and the periodicity and amplitude of the episodes vary throughout the cycle with a notable peak of this hormone before ovulation. The level of FSH is greater early in the follicular phase and in mid-cycle, where there is also a cycle together with that of the LH. In spite of these variations a single estimation of gonadotrophins does represents their secretion over

Caffeine challenge in insomniac patients after total sleep deprivation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This study compared the effects of caffeine in patients with primary insomnia and normal volunteers. The main goal was to determine the differences in sensitivity to caffeine between the groups. We investigated the effects on daytime sleep of placebo or caffeine after a night of total sleep deprivation (SD). We hypothesized that insomniacs would be more affected by caffeine, which would suggest a change in adenosine receptor (number or sensitivity) in primary insomniacs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Six primary insomnia patients (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Di

The effects of atropine on atrio-ventricular conduction in patients with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. Studies with His bundle electrogram.

The effects of atropine on normal and anomalous A-V pathways were investigated using HBE in 40 cases consisting of 25 subjects without pre-excitation (group I) and 15 cases with WPW syndrome (group II). In group I, A-H interval shortened with a mean decrease of 30% following the administration of atropine (p less than 0.001), while P-A and H-V intervals as well as QRS duration remained unchanged. In group II the electrocardiogram showed WPW syndrome pattern (pattern W) in 12, normalization (pattern N) in 1 and both patterns (pattern WN) in 2 cases during the control study. In 10 cases pattern

Vitamin A deficiency induces a decrease in EEG delta power during sleep in mice.

Recent report (Maret, S., Franken, P., Dauvilliers, Y., Ghyselinck, N.B., Chambon, P., Tafti, M., 2005. Retinoic acid signaling affects cortical synchrony during sleep. Science 310, 111-113.) has suggested that vitamin A (retinol and its derivatives) is genetically involved in the electroencephalogram (EEG) delta oscillation during sleep. However, this finding has not yet been confirmed by other studies. In this study, we attempted to record the sleep EEG and behavior, and to quantify striatal monoamines in mice fed a vitamin A-deficient (VAD) diet for 4 weeks, in order to clarify the linkage

Central nervous system involvement in gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina with hyperornithinaemia.

In gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina with hyperornithinaemia (GA), a genetically determined deficiency of ornithine delta-aminotransferase activity leads to high ornithine concentrations in body fluids. GA is characterized by centripetally progressing retinal and choroidal destruction and selective atrophy with tubular aggregates in type II skeletal muscle fibres. These findings have been suggested to be mediated by hyperornithinaemia-induced deficiency of high-energy creatine phosphate. As abnormal brain magnetic resonance images and electroencephalograms are found in another disorder

[Cushing's disease--pathophysiology and treatment].

We followed up 21 Cushing's disease patients (16 females and 5 males) aged 15 to 46 years, treated with reserpine (R) plus pituitary irradiation (PI). Mean duration of R administration and mean dose of PI were 24.5 +/- 10.8 (mean +/- SD) months and 54.0 +/- 9.8 Gy, respectively. Of them, four patients did not respond, one who received 66 Gy had brain necrosis and panhypopituitarism, and the other 16 patients (78%, 16/21) achieved initial remission. Of these 16 patients, there were 10 (aged 15 to 46 years) who were irradiated with 50 Gy or less (mean, 45.5 +/- 6.9 Gy), and 7 of them had initial

Beta-blockers withdrawal in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and chronotropic incompetence: Effect on functional capacity rationale and study design of a prospective, randomized, controlled trial (The Preserve-HR trial).

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is complex and multifactorial. Chronotropic incompetence (ChI) has emerged as a crucial pathophysiological mechanism. Beta-blockers, drugs with negative chronotropic effects, are commonly used in HFpEF, although current evidence does not support its routine use in these patients. HYPOTHESIS: We postulate beta-blockers may have deleterious effects in HFpEF and ChI. This work aims to evaluate the short-term effect of beta-blockers withdrawal on functional capacity assessed by the maximal oxygen uptake (pea

Creatine preserves mitochondrial integrity and ameliorates early epileptiform activity and cognitive impairment via regulation of Na⁺,K⁺-ATPase in adolescent rats with severe traumatic brain injury.

In this study, we demonstrate for the first time that post-injury creatine supplementation (300 mg/kg, p.o.) administered for two weeks attenuates blood-brain barrier disruption, cortical lesion volume (by ∼60%), spatial memory deficits (reducing escape latency by ∼50% in the Barnes maze), hippocampal theta/delta rhythm alterations, and epileptiform activity in 35-day-old male rats subjected to severe fluid percussion injury (FPI). In the hippocampus, the FPI protocol did not cause overt neuronal loss-particularly of parvalbumin-positive neurons in the CA1 and CA2 regions-but it significantly …
