[Growth behavior of cells of ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocyst].

OBJECTIVE: To compare the growth behavior of epithelium and fibroblast from ameloblastoma and keratocyst and to discuss the recurrence reason for the keratocyst. METHODS: Epithelial cells and fibroblast from ameloblastoma, keratocyst, dentigerous cyst, radicular cyst and oral mucosa were cultured and observed by phase-contrast microscope. RESULTS: The epithelial cells of ameloblastoma grew faster, with an irregular area around the cell mass and some small satellite-shaped cell mass. The epithelial cells of all the cysts and mucosa grew slower with the cell masses surrounded by fibroblasts wh…

Impacted maxillary second premolars: a report of four cases.

Impacted teeth are commonly encountered in clinical practice. Apart from their symptomatic nature and the probable functional disruption they can cause, impacted teeth have the potential to cause more severe and serious problems such as development of dentigerous cysts and other complications due to their proximity to the nasal and oral cavity. In this report, we highlight a series of four cases involving maxillary second premolars, teeth that are not often impacted.

[Transnasal endoscopic marsupialization for treatment of maxillary cysts].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness and usefulness of transnasal endoscopic surgery for the treatment of maxillary cysts. METHOD: Transnasal endoscopic surgery was performed in 13 patients with maxillary cysts that extended to the maxillary sinus or the nasal bottom. Five patients had a radicular cyst, three patients had a dentigerous cyst, three patients had a nasolabial cyst and two patients had a median cyst. After the resection of anterior edge of the inferior turbinate or the nasal bottom, the lateral wall of the inferior nasal meatus was opened. Then, the cyst wall of the maxillary…

Giant keratocystic odontogenic tumor: a challenging diagnosis.

The keratocystic odontogenic tumor, although a benign lesion, is peculiarly aggressive with a high recurrence rate. Its involvement with the maxillary antrum is atypical. We report the unusual case of a 20-year-old male patient with an extensive antral tumor associated with an impacted third molar, which was initially misdiagnosed as a dentigerous cyst. Clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic aspects were analyzed to provide useful information for the correct diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis within a multidisciplinary approach.

Endodontic management of an impacted premolar.

This report demonstrates a simple endodontic solution to an interdisciplinary case of a patient with multiple gene deficiencies. An adolescent patient presented with an impacted premolar that could not be extracted due to high-risk conditions. A suspicious degree of radiolucency around the crown was clinically diagnosed as dentigerous cyst. The treatment dilemma and implementation are discussed. This case report offers a different treatment option for impacted teeth when significant differential diagnosis of a pericoronal lesion dictates treatment.

Expression of extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer in odontogenic cysts.

OBJECTIVE: Extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) is known to induce matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) production. The expression of EMMPRIN in odontogenic cysts has not been previously studied. This study was done to determine the presence and the variability of EMMPRIN expression in various types of odontogenic cysts. STUDY DESIGN: An immunohistochemical study using a polyclonal anti-EMMPRIN antibody was done using 48 odontogenic cyst cases: 13 odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs), 18 dentigerous cysts (DCs), and 17 periapical cysts (PAs). Twelve cases of normal dental follicles (D…

Impacted wisdom tooth in the floor of the orbit.

Identification and management of ectopic supplemental tooth in anatomically complex areas such as the floor of orbit are challenging. This arises from the rarity and lack of consensus over management. The situation gets complex when there is an evidence of follicular pathology such as dentigerous cyst. In this report, a case of maxillary third molar associated with maxillary sinus and a distomolar in association with the floor of orbit medially to the inferior-orbital canal is presented. The surgical management of the condition is presented.

Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst with calcification: A rare case report of a distinct entity.

Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC) is a relatively rare odontogenic cyst, distinct from odontogenic keratocyst (OKC). In the 4th edition of WHO Classification of Head and Neck Tumors (2017), OOC has been included as a separate entity in the category of developmental odontogenic cysts. It presents as a unilocular radiolucent lesion in the posterior mandible and is frequently related to impacted teeth, thus mimicking dentigerous cyst. Due to low local aggressiveness and no association with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome, it does not show tendency to recur. When compared to OKC, OOC ex…

Histopathology was obtained on 28 (45.1%) of the 62 diagnosed cystic lesions. Dentigerous cysts accounted for 20 (71.4%) of the 28 cystic lesions. Brachycephalic breeds were overrepresented in this study. Boxer, pug, Shih Tzu, and Boston terrier dogs were most likely to present with cystic lesions associated with unerupted teeth. Interdisciplinary surgical management of multiple retained and impacted teeth in a pediatric patient: a case report.

Eruption disturbances may generate esthetic, functional, and structural complications in pediatric patients. This report describes a 10-year-old male patient presenting delayed dental eruption, multiple retained and impacted permanent teeth, a supernumerary tooth, and a dentigerous cyst in the mandibular region. Clinical evaluation, panoramic radiography, and cone beam computed tomography revealed severe ectopic positions, risk of root resorption, and mechanical obstructions preventing eruption. A comprehensive single-stage surgical approach was performed under general anesthesia, including ex…

Later surgical enucleation was done and specimen was sent for microscopic examination and was diagnosed as AOT along with a dentinoid-like deposits which is a rare finding.

[Cystic lesion with a displaced tooth in the maxillary sinus].

Ameloblastomas are epithelial odontogenic tumors in the mandibula or maxilla with potential local infiltrating growth; therefore, relapses can occur after incomplete resection. Among the different histological subtypes, the following are of clinical importance: The so-called unicystic ameloblastoma, radiologically presenting as a common dentigerous cyst, and the so-called extraosseous ameloblastoma. This case report describes the rare combination of a unicystic ameloblastoma with extraosseous localization in the maxillary sinus and association with a displaced tooth. This unusual constellation…

Initial-Stage Primary Intraosseous Squamous Cell Carcinoma Derived from Odontogenic Keratocyst with Unusual Keratoameloblastomatous Change of the Maxilla: A Case Report and Literature Discussion.

Primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma (PIOSCC) is a rare malignant neoplasm derived from odontogenic epithelial remnants in the central jaw bone. Most PIOSCCs originate from odontogenic cysts with a nonkeratinized epithelial lining, especially from radicular/residual and dentigerous cysts. There have been few reports of PIOSCCs derived from the odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), particularly those describing pathological features at the initial stage. The diagnosis of PIOSCC is difficult and based on exclusion of other carcinomas, including metastatic tumors from other primary sites. Here, w…

Tube Decompression for Staged Treatment of a Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst-A Case Report.

The calcifying odontogenic cyst is a rare developmental odontogenic lesion with a distinguishing cystic lining containing "ghost" epithelial cells. The variation in clinical, radiographic, and histologic findings makes the treatment decision difficult for these lesions. There are very few reports on treatment, with enucleation and curettage being the standard surgical method of choice for the cystic type and excision of the tumor for the solid type. A 2-stage surgical approach consisting of initial decompression with tube placement followed by a secondary procedure of enucleation and curettage
