The aim of this study was to investigate factors associated with caries experience in the primary dentition of one- to five-year-old children with cerebral palsy. A total of 266 dental records were examined, and caries experience was measured by dmft. The following variables were also analyzed: gender, oral hygiene, history of gastroesophageal reflux, use of medications for gastroesophageal reflux, gingival status, sugar intake and reports of polyuria, excessive thirst and xerostomia. For analysis purposes, the individuals were categorized as those with and without caries experience and subcat…

The present case report aims to describe a typical situation of an adult patient seeing her dentist for replacement of a missing tooth, but also requiring information regarding the possibilities for a return to the original occlusion as perceived by the patient based on family photos. The importance of the communication regarding the consequences of blindly following the patient's demand for a replacement of a missing tooth compared to the treatment possibilities when involving orthodontics is stressed. The significance of maintaining a high information level in the undergraduate training rega

Eating disorders such as bulimia nervosa can have a significant impact on the structure of the teeth. Gastric acid not only causes enamel and dentin to dissolve but also causes a progressive deterioration of dental health, which leads to functional esthetic and biological consequences. According to the classic concepts of restorative dentistry, the rehabilitation of such clinical cases will involve numerous full crowns and root canal treatments, a process which is expensive financially, biologically, and in terms of time. However, the development of resin composite and adhesive systems has mad

The objective of this study is to determine if there is an association between HIV infection in children and alterations in the chronological development of permanent dentition detectable by radiographic examination. The sample comprised two groups of children: (1) 50 children infected with HIV by vertical transmission and (2) 50 healthy children. The groups were paired according to age, sex, race, and socioeconomic level. After obtaining a panoramic radiograph, the stages of tooth calcification and the frequency of subjects showing alveolar eruption of the first and second mandibular permanen…

BACKGROUND: The relationship between maxillary canine displacement and the simultaneous occurrence of "genetically determined predisposition to disturbed development of the dentition" as defined by Hoffmeister was investigated in 675 patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Panoramic radiographs taken of each patient during the first and the second mixed dentition periods were evaluated. Canine inclination and the distance between the tip of the canine and a line connecting the cusps of the molars were computed in five different age groups according to Dausch-Neumann.
RESULTS: Statistical analysis re…

Worn, flat occlusal surfaces and anterior edge-to-edge occlusion are ubiquitous among the dentitions of prehistoric humans. The concept of attritional occlusion was proposed in the 1950s as a hypothesis to explain these characteristics. The main aspects of this hypothesis are: 1) the dentitions of ancient populations in heavy-wear environments were continuously and dynamically changing owing to life-long attritional tooth reduction and compensatory tooth migration, 2) all contemporary humans inherit these compensatory mechanisms, and recent reduction in wear severity has resulted in failure to…

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Hoffmeister was the first to recognize the common genetic origin of structurally very varied disturbances in the development of the dentition. He coined the term "microsymptoms of a genetically determined predisposition to disturbed development". The purpose of the present study was to examine the incidence of those microsymptoms in a group of patients undergoing orthodontic treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The orthodontic findings in 4208 patients were evaluated, and nine characteristic symptoms were registered with reference to the panoramic and other radiographs and to …

Physiological dentition exchange is often interfered with exogenous and endogenous factors. For this reason it must be steadily regulated. The authors present complex view on this topic based on literature studies and own experiences. The authors define fundamental principles "guided exchange", "tooth eruption" and "eruption path". Correct explication of these ideas is necessary for text understanding. Dentition exchange is considered as complex of eruption interactions of individual permanent teeth including molars. The project is based on idea that dentition exchange time is optimal for prev…

Gingival fibromatosis is usually seen as an isolated finding or occasionally in association with other features as part of a syndrome. The combination of gingival enlargement, hypertrichosis, epilepsy and mental retardation is also a commonly reported syndrome that features gingival fibromatosis. The following report is about a mentally retarded patient who has shown no sign of hypertrichosis, but has been taking phenobarbital as a long-term therapy drug for anti-convulsion. Long-term management of this patient has been carried out from the age of one-and-a-half years to 14 years old. The pati

Odontodysplasia is an uncommon clinicopathological condition with a variety of expressions. Although it is generally recognized as a localized disorder of dental tissue, its aetiology has not yet been well explained. In the present case, odontodysplasia with oligodontia in the permanent dentition is reported. The patient was in good health with normal stature and no other physical abnormalities. His parents and siblings were dentally and medically normal. The primary teeth appeared to be normal except for the primary second molars, where the enamel was malformed. However, the permanent incisor…

RESULTS: Continuous eruption of the permanent human dentition past a stable periodontium does occur in response to tooth height lost by wear, despite the fact that supereruption may lead to the eventual self destruction of the dentition. This mechanism was primarily responsible for the early loss (at 40-45 yea …

Hemifacial microsomia (HFM), a developmental abnormality involving the first and second branchial arches, is one of the most common craniofacial abnormalities. Although the general presentations of hemifacial microsomia--such as unilateral microtia, macrostomia, and hypoplasia of the mandibular ramus and condyle--are wellknown, the effects on the teeth are not well-documented. This study examined the primary and permanent tooth dimensions of dental casts of 50 hemifacial microsomia patients compared with those of 50 normal control patients matched for sex and dental status. The results showed

Unerupted primary teeth are a rare event and in most cases involve the second primary molars. The impaction may be primary, meaning that the teeth never have been erupted (also called primary failure of eruption), or it may be secondary, meaning that the teeth after eruption are reimpacted. The present report describes five cases (three boys and two girls) with primary failure of eruption of totally fourteen second primary molars. None of these teeth ever erupted and were removed surgically at an age of 10-11 yrs. Additionally, in all five cases the eruption of the entire permanent dentition w…

Dental features are commonly expected to provide an accurate estimate of a horse's age. In this study the dentition of 434 thoroughbreds was photographed and the individual dental features documented, the true age of all the horses was known. For each dental feature the correlation with true age was determined. The eruption of the incisor teeth was the most consistent feature but it was not totally reliable. The presence of a hook on the upper corner incisor and Galvayne's groove proved to be of no value when estimating age and, of the attritional features studied, the dental star showed the h…

One thousand and twenty-four children with a mean age of 6.41 yr were examined to determine the mean ages of eruption for the first permanent molars and the permanent central and lateral incisors. The youngest observed age for the eruption of any permanent tooth amongst girls was 4.50 yr and amongst boys, 4.31 yr. The eruption ages were on the whole later than those reported in most African studies, but were very similar to those found for Kenyan African and American blacks.

Two high and two low socioeconomic areas were selected for the Tanzanian portion of this study, with all nursery schools located in those areas included, for a subtotal of 580 children. The Finnish group was comprised of a total of 575 Caucasian children examined. The Tanzanian children (83 percent Black African, 10 percent Asian, 7 percent Arab) had fewer occlusal anomalies than the Finnish children did. Finnish children had a 13-percent incidence rate of lateral cross-bite; among African children, 8 percent showed anterior crossbite; and among the combined Asian/Arab group of children, 10 pe
