Cross-sectional association between vitamin B12 status and probable postpartum depression in Indian women.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B12 is an essential micronutrient for neurological function, as it leads to the regeneration of methionine from homocysteine, which is precursor of biologically active molecule S-Adenosyl Methionine (SAM). Pregnancy is a state of increased demand and delayed postpartum repletion of nutrients may predispose women to depression. METHODS: We included women who visited the hospital at 6-weeks postpartum for a regular checkup. Inclusion criteria were age (18-50 years), and willingness to donate venous sample for analysis. Exclusion criteria included previous history of mood dis

Association between perceived birth trauma and postpartum depression: A prospective cohort study in China.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between women's perceived birth trauma and risk of postpartum depression (PPD). METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study in China between December 2018 and November 2019. Women aged 18-45 years who had a singleton live birth at a university teaching hospital were enrolled after written consent was obtained. PPD was defined as a score of 13 or more on the Chinese version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. We used multiple log-binomial regression analysis to estimate the independent association between perceived birth trauma and PPD. RESUL

Genome-wide gene expression changes in postpartum depression point towards an altered immune landscape.

Maternal postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant public health concern due to the severe negative impact on maternal and child health and well-being. In this study, we aimed to identify genes associated with PPD. To do this, we investigated genome-wide gene expression profiles of pregnant women during their third trimester of pregnancy and tested the association of gene expression with perinatal depressive symptoms. A total of 137 women from a cohort from the University of North Carolina, USA were assessed. The main phenotypes analysed were Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) scor

Abnormal information flow in postpartum depression: A resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common mental disorder among women. However, the brain information flow alteration in patients with PPD remains unclear. This study investigated the brain information flow characteristics of patients with PPD and their value for clinical evaluation by using support vector regression (SVR). METHODS: Structural and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were acquired from 21 patients with PPD and 23 age-, educational level-, body mass index-, and menstruation-matched healthy controls. The preferred information flow direction between

Intimate Partner Violence during Pregnancy and Postpartum Depression in Japan: A Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The impact of intimate partner violence (IPV) on postpartum depression (PPD) has been reported in various countries by many studies. However, the association between IPV and PPD in Japan has been scarce. In addition to the limited number of research on the relationship between IPV and PPD, the number of women seeking help from IPV support centers has been steadily increasing in Japan. Hence, it is of interest to explore the relationship between IPV during pregnancy and PPD in Japan. METHODS: Four-page questionnaires assessing sociodemographic characteristics, women's personal situ

Breastfeeding and postpartum depression: Assessing the influence of breastfeeding intention and other risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Risk and protective factors for postpartum depression have been extensively studied, and in recent studies an association between breastfeeding and maternal mood has been reported. The present retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the association between breastfeeding-related variables and postpartum depression (based on Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale threshold criteria) within the context of other known risk factors. METHOD: Breastfeeding information, demographic information, and scores on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale were examined from

Postpartum depression in rats: differences in swim test immobility, sucrose preference and nurturing behaviors.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common disorder affecting both mothers and their offspring. Studies of PPD in laboratory animals have typically assessed either immobility on forced swim testing or sucrose preference in ovariectomized rats following hormone supplementation and withdrawal or in stress models. To date, few studies have related these measures to maternal behaviors, a potential indicator of depressive-like activity postpartum. Because a single measure may be insufficient to characterize depression, the present study determined the distribution of depressive-like behaviors in Sprag

Postpartum bonding: the role of perinatal depression, anxiety and maternal-fetal bonding during pregnancy.

Adverse effects of perinatal depression on the mother-child interaction are well documented; however, the influence of maternal-fetal bonding during pregnancy on postpartum bonding has not been clearly identified. The subject of this study was to investigate prospectively the influence of maternal-fetal bonding and perinatal symptoms of anxiety and depression on postpartum mother-infant bonding. Data from 80 women were analyzed for associations of symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as maternal bonding during pregnancy to maternal bonding in the postpartum period using the Edinburgh Pos

Web-Based Intervention for Postpartum Depression: Formative Research and Design of the MomMoodBooster Program.

BACKGROUND: In this report we describe the development and use of a web portal in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami. This large scale disaster confronted many displaced people with death, despair and need for information and support. Awareness and insight in the emotional impact of disasters can provide opportunities for surveillance and early treatment. Moreover, online support systems can contribute to community building, empowerment of victims and resilience. OBJECTIVE: We evaluate the development and use of a multilingual web portal that combined a platform for information, emotional supp

An association between plasma ferritin concentrations measured 48 h after delivery and postpartum depression.

CONTEXT: Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional problem experienced by childbearing women, and postpartum depression (PPD) is the most common psychiatric disorder seen during the first year after delivery. The possible link between iron deficiency and PPD is not clear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether iron status 48 h after delivery was associated with PPD. Our hypothesis was that iron deficiency would be associated with PPD. DESIGN: This was a prospective cohort study of depression-free women studied in the postpartum period. SETTING: Women who give birth at obstetric units in severa

Onset and persistence of postpartum depression in an inner-city maternal health clinic system.

OBJECTIVE: Postpartum depressive disorders lead to maternal disability and disturbed mother-infant relationships, but information regarding the rates of major depressive disorder in minority women is noticeably lacking. The goal of this study was to determine whether the risk factors for and rate of postpartum major depressive disorder in a predominantly African American and Hispanic clinic population would be similar to those reported for Caucasian women. METHOD: Investigators systematically screened all women scheduled for their first postpartum visit on selected days at four publicly funde

The risk of postpartum depressive symptoms in immigrant women with recent gestational diabetes mellitus.

AIMS: To evaluate the impact of immigration status and sociodemographic risk factors on postpartum depressive (PPD) symptoms among women with recent gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). METHODS: We analysed data from 327 women with recent GDM who participated in a postpartum diabetes prevention trial in Toronto, Canada. Multivariable logistic regression evaluated the association between self-reported immigration status (Canadian-born vs. immigrant), overall and by time since immigration (<10 years vs. ≥10 years) and PPD symptoms based on a score of ≥10 on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Sc

A Call for Better Guidance and Treatments for Comorbid Postpartum Depression and Substance Use Disorders.

Postpartum depression is a serious, but treatable condition experienced after childbirth. While most cases do not involve excess substance use, alcohol and other substance use have been strongly associated with this condition. While serotonergic antidepressants have been a mainstay of pharmacologic therapy for postpartum depression, studies of antidepressant use in postpartum depression have largely excluded those with substance use disorder, and meta-analyses suggest antidepressants offer limited benefit in those with depression and co-occurring substance use disorder. There is also under-app

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Postpartum Depressive Symptoms in Women with Low and Late Fertility.

Background: Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is implicated in both gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and mood disorders, suggesting a shared pathophysiology. However, the impact of GDM on maternal depressive symptoms, particularly among women with "low and late" fertility, remains poorly characterized. Methods: We compared the risk of postpartum depressive symptoms, assessed on the second postpartum day using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), with a cut-off score ≥ 12, and the Anhedonia, Anxiety, and Depression subscales, between Northeast Italian women

History of miscarriage and postpartum depression: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between postpartum depression (PPD) and miscarriage history and the role of moderators. METHODS: We identified observational studies of PPD rates in women with vs. without miscarriage history in Embase and Medline in July 2023 and updated in October 2024. Study quality was evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The primary outcome was the odds ratio (OR, 95 % confidence intervals [95 %CI]) of PPD in women with vs. without miscarriage history. Meta-regression analyses included the effects of age, marital status, history of depression/anxiety and parity
