OBJECTIVE: Dermatomyositis (DM) is the best known subtype of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. The hallmarks of DM muscle pathology including microangiopathy, inflammatory infiltration, and perifascicular atrophy. Recent findings have revealed pathogenetic effects of myeloperoxidase (MPO) by causing oxidative damage and regulating abnormal immunity in multiple disease conditions. In this study, we aimed to explore the role of MPO in the pathogenesis of DM.
METHODS: The peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) mRNA expression and DNA methylation of MPO were verified using real-time qPCR and …

INTRODUCTION: Anti-SAE1 antibodies have a low prevalence in dermatomyositis patients. Case Description. A 61-year-old woman presented with progressive shortness of breath, arthralgia, heliotrope rash, Gottron's papules, and erythematous rash. She had an interstitial lung disease (ILD) with a significant decrease in lung function. There was no muscle involvement. Immunological laboratory test results showed strongly positive anti-SAE1 antibodies. Glucocorticoid treatment resulted in remission of dermatomyositis.
CONCLUSION: Anti-SAE antibodies in dermatomyositis patients are closely linked to …

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review provides updates regarding biomarker studies that address key clinical unmet needs, which relate to the evaluation of the disease activity in patients with dermatomyositis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Increasing evidence supports that the serum levels of dermatomyositis-specific antibodies (DM-MSAs), which include anti-Mi-2, anti-NXP2, anti-MDA5, anti-TNF1-γ, and anti-SAE, are correlated with the disease activity. Moreover, serial measurements of DM-MSA levels may help to predict the disease status. Beyond the MSA, macrophage activation-related biomarker-soluble CD163, CD2…

Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory arthritis, most commonly occurring several years after the onset of psoriasis. Psoriatic arthritis is associated with many comorbidities, including diabetes mellitus, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, fibromyalgia, and cardiovascular disease. Dermatomyositis is an inflammatory myopathy primarily affecting the skin and muscles. As per literature review, cases of psoriasis and dermatomyositis have been reported. In most published cases, the courses of these diseases develop independently. This is the case of a 45-year-old woman initially diagnosed with psor…

The idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) are a group of heterogeneous systemic diseases which include as main subtypes: polymyositis (PM), dermatomyositis (DM) and inclusion body myositis (IBM). The key feature of IIMs is the muscle weakness, accompanied by a characteristic skin rash in DM patients. The overall risk for malignancy in IIM is higher compared to the age-and sex-matched general population. Most epidemiologic studies have included only PM and DM patients and reported consistently higher rates of malignancy in DM. Most common types of cancer in DM are adenocarcinoma of the lung,…

Dermatomyositis (DM) is an idiopathic, inflammatory connective tissue disorder characterized by symmetrical proximal myopathy and characteristic skin involvement. The pathogenesis of DM is widely debated; however, it is postulated to be an end result of immune-mediated cascade, triggered by multiple environmental factors in a genetically predisposed individual. In addition to underlying malignancies, many drugs have been reported to be associated with DM. Capecitabine is a chemotherapeutic agent, approved by the United States-Food and Drug Administration for the management of colonic, metastat…

Eight members of a family of Working Kelpies were presented with signs compatible with dermatomyositis. Alopecia, crusts, ulcerations of the skin, depigmentation of nasal planum and lips, onychodystrophy and atrophy of the masticatory muscles were present with varying degree. Histopathology of the skin, but not from muscles was performed in three dogs and confirmed the clinical diagnosis. Different immunomodulating drugs (steroids, cyclosporine, mycophenolate mofetil, pentoxifylline, doxycyline/niacinamid, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E) were used with variable success. Dermatomyositis is a…

Dermatomyositis is rare during the reproductive period, but when it does occur, most cases have been reported from the viewpoint of the obstetric management of high-risk pregnancy. In return, there is little information concerning the contribution of pregnancy to the development and course of dermatomyositis. We describe a patient with dermatomyositis that presented after the delivery of a healthy infant. This case, with support from a literature review, suggests that pregnancy could be a trigger or contributor for the development of dermatomyositis.

Dermatomyositis (DM) is a systemic inflammatory condition characterized by cutaneous and muscle findings, in addition to potential involvement of other organ systems. A distinct subtype of DM exists that is categorized by cutaneous findings with absent or minimal muscle involvement, referred to as clinically amyopathic dermatomyositis or dermatomyositis sine myositis. A variety of topical, immunosuppressive, and immunomodulatory therapies have been utilized to treat cutaneous DM. The advent of biological agents including tumor necrosis factor-α antagonists, intravenous immunoglobulin, rituxima…

Juvenile dermatomyositis is an autoimmune connective tissue disease occurring in children less than 16 years old. It is part of a heterogeneous group of muscle diseases called idiopathic Iiflammatory myopathies. It had previously been reported in black Africans resident in UK. However, there is no documented case reported from Africa. The index sign of heliotrope rashes is often difficult to visualise in the black skin. An 11-year-old Nigerian girl presenting with clinical, laboratory and histopathological features of juvenile dermatomyositis is presented here. It is hoped that this case will …
