Coeliac disease, gluten-free diet, and malignancy.

Two hundred and two patients with coeliac disease or idiopathic steatorrhoea previously reported from this unit have been reviewed after a f … uten withdrawal or persisting falt jejunal biopsies were more prone to die of cancer. A gluten-free diet did not appear to be effective in preventing malignant complications, but a longer follow-up of patients will be necessary to provide a final answer to this question.

Diet and growth in congenital heart disease.

To assess the relationship between diet and growth in congenital heart disease we studied nutrient intake, body measurements, and cardiac status in 568 affected ambulatory patients less than 11 years of age. Most had mild heart disease, 104 were cyanotic, and only 10 were in congestive heart failure. Major disturbances of growth were uncommon. For the entire group body weight was below normal but only in those studied before 2 years of age; rate of growth and weight gain were normal over the period preceding the dietary study. There was no statistically significant relationship between intake …

Excessive Sodium Intake in Commercial Diet Catering Meal Plans in Poland: Implications for Diet Quality and Chronic Disease Risk.

Background/Objectives: Excessive sodium (primarily from sodium chloride, NaCl) intake remains one of the leading dietary risk factors associated with hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic health conditions worldwide. Commercial diet catering services providing ready-to-eat daily meal plans have become increasingly popular and are often perceived as nutritionally balanced; however, analytical evidence regarding their actual salt content remains limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the NaCl content of daily food rations (DFRs) offered by commercial diet catering servi…

Taxonomic and functional shifts in the microbiome of severely obese, prediabetic patients: Ketogenic diet versus energy-matched standard diet.

AIMS: Obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are among the leading global health challenges of the 21st century. While caloric restriction remains the cornerstone of weight loss interventions, ketogenic diets (KD), characterised by low carbohydrate and high fat intake, have been shown to improve metabolic health partly by modulating the gut microbiome. This study investigated the effects of a short-term KD on gut microbiome composition and function in severely obese, prediabetic patients, compared to an energy-matched standard diet (SD). METHODS: In a randomised trial, patients with BMI …

Raw and boiled ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) inclusive diet improves fertility parameters in high cholesterol diet-induced obese rats.

BACKGROUND: Obesity has been implicated in reproductive problems, particularly in male functionality disorder while the therapeutic effects of ginger have been owing to its pharmacological activities. AIM: The study compares ginger-inclusive diet effects on fertility parameters in obese rats. METHODS: Rats were given a high-cholesterol diet to induce obesity. The rats were split up into seven separate groups (n = 10): healthy control rats fed basal diet; obese untreated rats fed high cholesterol diet (HCD); reference drug-treated obese rats, clomiphene citrate (CC, 2 mg/kg BW/day); obese rat…

Diet and Immune Effects Trial (DIET)- a randomized, double-blinded dietary intervention study in patients with melanoma receiving immunotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Gut microbiome modulation is a promising strategy for enhancing the response to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB). Fecal microbiota transplant studies have shown positive signals of improved outcomes in both ICB-naïve and refractory melanoma patients; however, this strategy is challenging to scale. Diet is a key determinant of the gut microbiota, and we have previously shown that (a) habitual high dietary fiber intake is associated with an improved response to ICB and (b) fiber manipulation in mice impacts antitumor immunity. We recently demonstrated the feasibility of a controlled …

[TEN-HOUR INTERMITTENT FASTING PLUS MEDITERRANEAN DIET VERSUS MEDITERRANEAN DIET ALONE FOR TREATMENT OF NONALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE (NAFLD)].

INTRODUCTION: Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) has become the leading cause of liver morbidity. The Mediterranean diet can improve NAFLD and may be offered as treatment. Intermittent fasting has been shown to improve aspects of the metabolic syndrome, but its effect on NAFLD is inconclusive. OBJECTIVES: A randomized - controlled study assessed the outcomes of the effect of the Mediterranean diet alone versus the Mediterranean diet in combination with intermittent fasting for 16 weeks in patients with NAFLD (1:2 ratio) and subsequent long term follow-up. Outcomes parameters included th…

Effectiveness of an anti-inflammatory diet versus low-fat diet for knee osteoarthritis: the FEAST randomised controlled trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic inflammation plays a key role in knee osteoarthritis pathophysiology and increases risk of comorbidities, yet most interventions do not typically target inflammation. Our study will investigate if an anti-inflammatory dietary programme is superior to a standard care low-fat dietary programme for improving knee pain, function and quality-of-life in people with knee osteoarthritis. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The eFEct of an Anti-inflammatory diet for knee oSTeoarthritis study is a parallel-group, assessor-blinded, superiority randomised controlled trial. Following baseline asse…

Bibliometric analysis of global research profile on ketogenic diet therapies in neurological diseases: Beneficial diet therapies deserve more attention.

BACKGROUND: The protective effects of Ketogenic Diet Therapies (KDTs) on neurological diseases have been extensively studied over the past two decades. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze the publication of KDTs in the neurological field from 2000 to 2021. METHODS: A literature search was performed on June 7th, 2022, using the search terms: (("ketone" OR "ketogenic" OR "*hydroxybuty*") AND ("neuro*")) in the WoSCC database. Collected data were further analyzed using VOSviewer, CiteSpace and other online bibliometric websites. The annual publication volume…

Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide is required for moderate high-fat diet- but not high-carbohydrate diet-induced weight gain.

Both high-fat (HFD) and high-carbohydrate (ST) diets are known to induce weight gain. Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) is secreted mainly from intestinal K cells upon stimuli by nutrients such as fat and glucose, and it potentiates glucose-induced insulin secretion. GIP is well known to contribute to HFD-induced obesity. In this study, we analyzed the effect of ST feeding on GIP secretion and metabolic parameters to explore the role of GIP in ST-induced weight gain. Both wild-type (WT) and GIP receptor deficient ( GiprKO) mice were fed normal chow (NC), ST, or moderate (m)HFD…

Altered gastrointestinal microbiota in irritable bowel syndrome and its modification by diet: probiotics, prebiotics and the low FODMAP diet.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disorder characterised by abdominal pain or discomfort with disordered defecation. This review describes the role of the gastrointestinal (GI) microbiota in the pathogenesis of IBS and how dietary strategies to manage symptoms impact on the microbial community. Evidence suggests a dysbiosis of the luminal and mucosal colonic microbiota in IBS, frequently characterised by a reduction in species of Bifidobacteria which has been associated with worse symptom profile. Probiotic supplementation trials suggest intentional modulation of the GI micr…

Centrally administered urocortin 2 decreases gorging on high-fat diet in both diet-induced obesity-prone and -resistant rats.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is a costly, deadly public health problem for which new treatments are needed. Individual differences in meal pattern have been proposed to have a role in obesity risk. The present study tested the hypothesis that (i) the microstructure of chronic high-fat diet intake differs between genetically selected diet-induced obesity (DIO) and diet-resistant (DR) rats, and (ii) central administration of urocortin 2 (Ucn 2), a corticotropin-releasing factor type 2 agonist, decreases high-fat diet intake not only in lean DR rats, but also in obese DIO rats. DESIGN: Male, selectively b…
