Very low-calorie ketogenic diet reduces central blood pressure and cardiometabolic risk in post-menopausal women with essential hypertension and obesity: a single-center, prospective, open-label, clinical study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Obesity represents a crucial modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular complications. Two dietary approaches, Very Low-Calorie Ketogenic (VLCKD) and Intermittent Fasting (IFD) diets, have demonstrated to reduce blood pressure (BP) and produce cardiovascular and metabolic advantages. We aimed to evaluate the effects of VLCKD or IFD compared to Free Diet (FD) on office brachial and central systolic BP levels. Secondary outcomes included changes from baseline of diastolic BP and several weight-related indexes. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this single-center, open-label, prospecti

Lingonberries and their two separated fractions differently alter the gut microbiota, improve metabolic functions, reduce gut inflammatory properties, and improve brain function in ApoE-/- mice fed high-fat diet.

Lingonberries (LB) have been shown to have beneficial metabolic effects, which is associated with an altered gut microbiota. This study investigated whether the LB-induced improvements were associated with altered gut- and neuroinflammatory markers, as well as cognitive performance in ApoE-/- mice fed high-fat (HF) diets. Whole LB, as well as two separated fractions of LB were investigated. Eight-week-old male ApoE-/- mice were fed HF diets (38% kcal) containing whole LB (wLB), or the insoluble (insLB) and soluble fractions (solLB) of LB for 8 weeks. Inclusion of wLB and insLB fraction reduced

Bulimia nervosa and dietary restraint.

Patients with bulimia nervosa were compared with non-bulimic restrained and unrestrained eaters on several questionnaire and interview measures related to eating patterns, preoccupation with dieting and food, and general psychopathology. Bulimic subjects did not differ significantly from non-bulimic restrained eaters on measures of fear of weight gain, dietary restraint, and the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI) subscales of Drive for Thinness and Body Dissatisfaction, although both groups scored significantly higher on these measures than unrestrained eaters. Subjects with bulimia nervosa diff

Dietetic intervention in psoriatic arthritis: the DIETA trial.

AIM: To evaluate whether dietary pattern changes, antioxidant supplementation or 5-10% weight loss could improve disease activity (skin and joint) in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA). METHODS: A total of 97 PsA patients were enrolled in this 12-week randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial. Patients were randomized into three groups: Diet-placebo (hypocaloric diet + placebo supplementation); Diet-fish (hypocaloric diet + 3 g/day of omega-3 supplementation; and Placebo. Food intake (3-day registry, Healthy Eating Index (HEI), and the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII)), body c

A comment on the role of dietary restraint in the development of bulimia nervosa.

The evidence is examined that dietary restraint is causally implicated in the development of bulimic episodes as experienced by some clinical populations, notably patients with bulimia nervosa. An analysis of some of the methodological and conceptual difficulties in this area of research reveals that both the concept of dietary restraint and the phenomenon of overeating in the laboratory are less straightforward than has been assumed, and that conclusions about the causal role of dietary restraint in the development of disordered eating are premature. Future research should be based on sophist

A one-week reduced-carbohydrate diet lowers insulin requirements and shifts the IGF axis with no detectable short-term change in endothelial function in a randomized, crossover trial of adults with type 1 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) must deliver insulin into the peripheral circulation rather than more physiologically into the hepatic portal circulation, leading to a chronic state of underinsulinization in the liver. Previous research suggests that decreased hepatic insulin perturbs the growth hormone-IGF-1 system in these patients. We tested whether short-term carbohydrate restriction, by lowering exogenous insulin requirements and exacerbating hepatic underinsulinization, modifies IGF axis hormones, binding proteins, and vascular function. METHODS: We performe

The inclusion of canola meal or corn-DDGS in reduced-crude protein corn-soybean meal diets modified digestibility, microbial metabolites, and cecal microbiota independent of coccidiosis vaccination regime in broiler chickens.

The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of incorporating canola meal (CM) and corn distiller's dried grains with solubles (cDDGS) into corn-soybean meal (SBM)-based reduced-crude protein (RP) diets on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and cecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and microbiota in broiler chickens with or without coccidiosis vaccination. Upon arrival, birds were assigned to treatments in 2 × 4 (vaccination × diet) factorial arrangement, with half of birds spray-vaccinated against coccidiosis. Birds were allocated to vaccinated or unvaccinated groups in a randomized

Short Chain Fatty Acids and Bacterial Taxa Associated with Reduced Salmonella enterica serovar I 4,[5],12:i:- Shedding in Swine Fed a Diet Supplemented with Resistant Potato Starch.

Salmonella enterica serovar I 4,[5],12:i:- is a foodborne pathogen of concern because many isolates are multidrug-resistant (resistant to ≥3 antimicrobial classes) and metal tolerant. In this study, three in-feed additives were individually tested for their ability to reduce Salmonella I 4,[5],12:i:- shedding in swine: resistant potato starch (RPS), high amylose corn starch, and a fatty acid blend, compared with a standard control diet over 21 days. Only RPS-fed pigs exhibited a reduction in Salmonella fecal shedding, different bacterial community compositions, and different cecal short chain

Propranolol and low-dose isoproterenol ameliorate insulin resistance, enhance β-arrestin2 signaling, and reduce cardiac remodeling in high-fructose, high-fat diet-fed mice: Comparative study with metformin.

AIMS: β-Arrestin2 signaling has emerged as a promising therapeutic target for the management of insulin resistance and related complications. Moreover, recent studies have shown that certain G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) ligands can modulate β-arrestin2 signaling. The current study examined the effects of the β-blocker propranolol and a low dose of the agonist isoproterenol (L-D-ISOPROT) on β-arrestin2 signaling, insulin resistance, and cardiac remodeling in high-fructose, high-fat diet (HFrHFD)-fed mice. In addition, the effects of these agents were compared to those of the clinical antid

Very-low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD) in the management of metabolic diseases: systematic review and consensus statement from the Italian Society of Endocrinology (SIE).

BACKGROUND: Weight loss is a milestone in the prevention of chronic diseases associated with high morbility and mortality in industrialized countries. Very-low calorie ketogenic diets (VLCKDs) are increasingly used in clinical practice for weight loss and management of obesity-related comorbidities. Despite evidence on the clinical benefits of VLCKDs is rapidly emerging, some concern still exists about their potential risks and their use in the long-term, due to paucity of clinical studies. Notably, there is an important lack of guidelines on this topic, and the use and implementation of VLCKD

Food, drink, and herbs: alternative therapies and gout.

Gout was first recognized as a distinct clinical entity in antiquity. Our understanding of the epidemiology and treatment of gout has evolved over millennia intertwined with observations about social class and plant and animal sources of food, beverages and medicines. Investigators have identified various aspects of diet that relate to gout risk and recurrence. Some of our most useful medications for the treatment of gout were developed from herbal precursors. Traditional dietary recommendations for gout patients have included limiting high purine meat and alcohol consumption. More recent work
