Diet and Cognitive Function in Aging: An Individual Participant Data Meta-Analysis from 8 Cohorts in Europe and the United States.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive decline is a major public health concern as populations age. Diet is a modifiable contributor to cognitive health, yet observational findings remain inconsistent, partly because of methodological heterogeneity. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine associations between adherence to multiple dietary patterns and cognitive outcomes using harmonized individual participant data (IPD) from longitudinal cohorts. METHODS: We conducted an IPD meta-analysis including 17,368 participants from 8 longitudinal studies in Europe and the United States. Dietary intake was assessed us

Systematic literature review of the somatic comorbidities experienced by adults with phenylketonuria.

BACKGROUND: Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inborn error of phenylalanine (Phe) metabolism that, if untreated, causes Phe accumulation in the brain leading to neurophysiologic alterations and poor outcomes. Lifelong management centers on dietary Phe restriction, yet long-term complete metabolic control is unachievable for many adults. High blood Phe levels or chronic Phe and intact protein restriction in the diet may lead to somatic comorbidities. A systematic literature review was conducted to evaluate somatic comorbidities experienced by adults with PKU. METHODS: Clinical and observational stud

A Diversified Dietary Pattern Is Associated With a Balanced Gut Microbial Composition of Faecalibacterium and Escherichia/Shigella in Patients With Crohn's Disease in Remission.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Crohn's disease [CD] is associated with alterations in gut microbial composition and function. The present controlled-intervention study investigated the relationship between patterns of dietary intake and baseline gut microbiota in CD patients in remission and examined the effects of a dietary intervention in patients consuming a non-diversified diet [NDD]. METHODS: Forty outpatients with quiescent CD were recruited in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Based on 3-day food records, patients consuming a lower plant-based and higher red and processed meat-based diet were assigned t

Relative validity of a self-dietary assessment nutrition application compared with a 3-day food record in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease: A prospective study.

Accurate and repeated dietary assessment is essential for nutritional management in chronic kidney disease (CKD); however, conventional methods, such as the 3-day food record, are burdensome for routine clinical use. Digital self-administered dietary assessment tools may offer a practical alternative; however, validation data in non-dialysis CKD, particularly among Asian populations, remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the relative validity of a locally adapted digital self-dietary assessment application (Nutrirodcal) compared with a 3-day food record in patients with non-dialysis CKD

Euglycemic control of gestational diabetes mellitus by specific dietary manipulation: a case study presentation.

Gestational diabetes is the most common complication of pregnancy. If maternal hyperglycemia is not well controlled, excess glucose is transmitted to the fetus, which can lead to fetal macrosomia and maternal and fetal complications. Dietary treatment for gestational diabetes varies among practitioners. A case review is presented of a 32-year-old white woman with gestational diabetes whose condition was complicated by her blood glucose intolerance to lactose in milk. By following a carefully monitored regimen using specific dietary manipulation to maintain normoglycemia, the woman was able to

Diets including Animal Food Are Associated with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a clinical condition with a prevalence of up to 25% in Western countries. Typical GERD symptoms include heartburn and retrosternal regurgitation. Lifestyle modifications, including diet, are considered a first-line therapeutic approach. To evaluate the impact of life habits on GERD in this cross-sectional study, we used data collected through an online survey from 1146 participants. GERD was defined according to the Montreal Consensus. For all participants, clinical and lifestyle characteristics were recorded. Overall, 723 participants (63.1%) consumed

[The potato in hospital nutrition as an approach to its introduction in the urban diet: the case of Vitoria (Alava, Spain)].

Introduction: given the lack of historical documentary sources about the beginning of potato effective consumption in Vitoria (Alava, Spain), its introduction in the urban diet is estimated from cultivation and production data. This only allows asserting the introduction of the cultivation at the end of the 18th century, the recognition of two quantitative jumps during the Independence and First Carlist Wars, and that it was the second cultivation in quantity by 1857. Objective/method: from the hypothesis of a good correspondence between hospital diet and ordinary urban diet, evidenced in othe

The results of skin testing with food additives and the effect of an elimination diet in chronic and recurrent urticaria and recurrent angioedema.

Ninety-one subjects suffering from chronic or recurrent urticaria or recurrent angioedema of 2 months to 17 yr duration were skin-prick and scratch tested with 18 various food additives. Twenty-four of the subjects (26%) had at least one histamine equivalent skin test (ST) reaction. In contrast, only 24 (10%) of 247 non-urticaria control subjects showed comparable results. An oral provocation test with food additives was carried out on 10 of the 24 ST-positive subjects with urticaria or angioedema, but only one positive reaction, caused by benzoic acid, was recorded. All 91 subjects were advis

Long-term follow-up of celiac adults on gluten-free diet: prevalence and correlates of intestinal damage.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Celiac disease is the most common severe food intolerance in the Western world and is due to gluten ingestion in genetically susceptible children and adults. Intestinal biopsy is the golden standard for evaluation of mucosal damage associated with celiac disease. Gluten-free diet is the key treatment for celiac disease. Data on the long-term control of celiac disease are few and limited to small series of patients. The study reports data on the control of celiac disease and on its correlates in a large cohort of celiac adults during long-term treatment with gluten-free die

The role of the Mediterranean diet in reducing the risk of cognitive impairement, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease: a meta-analysis.

Age-related cognitive impairment and dementia pose a significant global health, social, and economic challenge. While Alzheimer's disease (AD) has historically been viewed as the leading cause of dementia, recent evidence reveals the considerable impact of vascular cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID), which now accounts for nearly half of all dementia cases. The Mediterranean diet-characterized by high consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and olive oil-has been widely recognized for its cardiovascular benefits and may also reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementi

Is There a Relationship Between the Dietary Inflammatory Index and Clinical Attachment Loss in Patients with Periodontitis?

OBJECTIVE: The pathogenesis of periodontal diseases is partially driven by oxidative stress. However, studies on the relationship between periodontitis and the inflammatory load of diet are still insufficient. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the relationship between the diet's inflammatory load and periodontitis and clinical attachment loss (CAL). METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 119 participants diagnosed with periodontitis according to the 1999 classification. The dietary inflammatory index (DII) was calculated using three-day food consumption records and divided into qua
