Similarities between the stimulus properties of phenylpropanolamine and amphetamine.

Rats at 80% body weight were trained to discriminate 1.0 mg/kg d-amphetamine versus saline in a two-lever, discrete trial drug discrimination task to obtain food pellets. After reliable discriminative control of lever choice was established, various doses of d,l-phenylpropanolamine (PPA, i.e., d,l-norephedrine) were substituted for the amphetamine training dose in non-reinforced test trials. Test doses of 10, 20, and 40 mg/kg PPA resulted in over 90% responses on the amphetamine-appropriate lever. Lower doses (1.25, 2.5, and 5.0 mg/kg) resulted in predominantly saline-appropriate responses. Th

Effect of ceruletide on discriminated avoidance behavior in rats.

To clarify the central action of peripherally administered ceruletide, we examined the effects of ceruletide and four different classes of neuroleptics, i.e. haloperidol, chlorpromazine, oxypertine and sulpiride, on the discriminated avoidance response (DAR) in rats. Ceruletide and sulpiride did not suppress the DAR over a broad range of doses, whereas other three neuroleptics caused a dose-related decrease in both avoidance and response rates. In addition, the combined administration of ceruletide (100 micrograms/kg s.c.) and neuroleptics at critical doses that suppress the DAR caused a signi

Qualitative and quantitative odour discrimation by mitral cells as compared to anterior olfactory nucleus cells.

The responses to odour stimulation of 61 single mitral cells and of 64 single anterior olfactory nucleus (AON) units were simultaneously recorded from rabbits. The test battery consisted of 6 chemical stimuli delivered at two intensity levels corresponding to a hundred-fold difference in concentration. The odour discrimination reaches its best for the mitral cells stimulated weakly; it decreased somewhere when the same cells are stimulated strongly. At AON level the odour discrimination already limited in the case of weak stimuli, almost disappears for strong stimuli. Multidimensional analysis

Effects of opiates on the discriminative stimulus properties of dopamine agonists.

Two groups of rats were trained to discriminate the dopamine agonists amphetamine (0.75 mg/kg) or apomorphine (0.38 mg/kg) from saline in a two-lever operant task. Various doses of morphine and pentazocine were tested for generalization to and interference with the discriminative stimulus complexes produced by the dopamine agonists. Low doses of morphine appeared to produce a stimulus complex which is similar to that produced by apomorphine, but which differs from the produced by amphetamine. Pentazocine showed no evidence of generalization to either the apomorphine or the amphetamine cue. Nei

Primate information processing under sodium pentobarbital and chlorpromazine: differential drug effects with tachistoscopically presented discriminative stimuli.

Sodium pentobarbital and chlorpromazine were evaluated for the degree to which they differentially reduce the speed or efficiency with which sensory information can be processed. Rhesus monkeys were tested under comparable doses of sodium pentobarbital and CPZ on a visual discrimination problem with varying durations of tachistoscopically presented stimulus information. When unlimited stimulus information was available, no effects of the two drugs were observed at the doses used, but as the duration of stimulus presentation was progressively decreased, the effects of sodium pentobarbital becam

Pentazocine, cyclazocine, and nalorphine as discriminative stimuli.

Pentazocine, cyclazocine, and nalorphine are narcotic antagonists that also have analgesic activity of their own. The present investigation compared the stimulus properties of these three drugs in rats. Each drug was used as a discriminative stimulus for a separate group of rats. Depression of one lever resulted in food reinforcement following the administration of drug, and the opposite lever was reinforced after saline. Each drug readily acquired control of discriminated responding. The specific narcotic antagonist, naloxone, which antagonizes many of the effects of pentazocine, cyclazocine,

Evolving a More Nurturing Society to Prevent Adverse Childhood Experiences.

This article presents a framework for evolving a society that nurtures the health and well-being of its population. We review evidence that adverse social conditions, including poverty, conflict, discrimination, and other forms of social rejection, contribute immensely to our most ubiquitous psychological, behavioral, and health problems. We then enumerate the ways that effective family and school prevention programs could ameliorate much of the social adversity leading to these problems. The widespread and effective implementation of these programs-in primary care, social services, and educat

Psychological foundations of digital empowerment: development and preliminary validation of self-determination theory-based scale for female university students.

INRODUCTION: As higher education undergoes rapid digital transformation, digital empowerment has emerged as a pivotal psychological resource for student functioning. Existing instruments conceptualize empowerment narrowly as technical proficiency, and no psychometrically validated Arabic-language measure exists. Addressing both gaps, this study developed and preliminarily validated a Digital Empowerment Scale (DES) grounded in Self-Determination Theory. METHODS: A sample of 248 female university students in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (M age = 21.0, SD = 2.85) completed a 19-item pool tapping psycho

Psychological adjustment and patient information in inflammatory bowel disease: development of two assessment instruments.

Research on the psychological adjustments that patients must make in living with inflammatory bowel disease, symptomatic and life-disrupting chronic illnesses, has been difficult to interpret because no standard measurement instruments of known reliability and validity have been available. Two studies are presented on the construction, validation and cross-validation of the two instruments measuring patient information and psychological adjustment in inflammatory bowel disease. Both scales were shown to be reliable on the basis of internal consistency. Convergent validity of the psychological

Exploring niacin skin flushing response in psychological screening of college students.

BACKGROUND: The psychological well-being of college students is a growing concern due to its impact on personal and academic outcomes. Traditional symptom-based scales for psychological health screening are often subjective and prone to misclassification. The niacin skin flushing response (NSFR), a physiologically grounded biomarker, has shown promise in identifying psychiatric conditions. This study explored the application of NSFR as an objective tool for psychological health screening among college students. METHODS: We recruited 633 college freshmen who completed the “College Student Menta

Interpretation bias and contamination-based obsessive-compulsive symptoms influence emotional intensity related to disgust and fear.

Biased processing of disgust-related stimuli is increasingly discussed in addition to fear-related processing as a maintenance factor for contamination-based obsessive-compulsive disorder (C-OCD). However, the differential impact of fear and disgust on biased processing in C-OCD is not yet completely understood. Because it is difficult to distinguish the two emotions in self-report assessment by directly addressing the specific emotions, a text paragraph-based interpretation bias paradigm was applied to more implicitly assess emotions. For the text-based interpretation bias paradigm, disgust-r

Shared Physiological Correlates of Multisensory and Expectation-Based Facilitation.

Perceptual performance in a visual task can be enhanced by simultaneous multisensory information, but can also be enhanced by a symbolic or amodal cue inducing a specific expectation. That similar benefits can arise from multisensory information and within-modality expectation raises the question of whether the underlying neurophysiological processes are the same or distinct. We investigated this by comparing the influence of the following three types of auxiliary probabilistic cues on visual motion discrimination in humans: (1) acoustic motion, (2) a premotion visual symbolic cue, and (3) a p

Smell and taste in cervical dystonia.

The pathophysiology of cervical dystonia is not completely understood. Current concepts of the pathophysiology propose that it is a network disorder involving the basal ganglia, cerebellum and sensorimotor cortex. These structures are primarily concerned with sensorimotor control but are also involved in non-motor functioning such as the processing of information related to the chemical senses. This overlap lets us hypothesize a link between cervical dystonia and altered sense of smell and taste. To prove this hypothesis and to contribute to the better understanding of cervical dystonia, we as

Somatosensory interactions reveal feature-dependent computations.

Our ability to perceive and discriminate textures is based on the processing of high-frequency vibrations generated on the fingertip as it scans across a surface. Although much is known about the processing of vibration amplitude and frequency information when cutaneous stimulation is experienced at a single location on the body, how these stimulus features are processed when touch occurs at multiple locations is poorly understood. We evaluated participants' ability to discriminate tactile cues (100-300 Hz) on one hand while they ignored distractor cues experienced on their other hand. We mani

Temporal correlations among functionally specialized striatal neural ensembles in reward-conditioned mice.

As the major input to the basal ganglia, the striatum is innervated by a wide range of other areas. Overlapping input from these regions is speculated to influence temporal correlations among striatal ensembles. However, the network dynamics among behaviorally related neural populations in the striatum has not been extensively studied. We used large-scale neural recordings to monitor activity from striatal ensembles in mice undergoing Pavlovian reward conditioning. A subpopulation of putative medium spiny projection neurons (MSNs) was found to discriminate between cues that predicted the deliv

The music perception performance of children with and without dyslexia in Taiwan.

Some Western studies have suggested a strong relation between musical discrimination abilities and reading-related skills. Music processing abilities and reading-related skills were evaluated for typically developing children and children with dyslexia. The results showed that pitch discrimination abilities of Chinese dyslexic children are not different from those of typically developing children. However, the former have poorer rhythm imitation abilities. Thus, in Chinese reading there is a strong relation between rhythm and reading acquisition, which is consistent with the research results o

Why is there a special issue on perirhinal cortex in a journal called hippocampus? The perirhinal cortex in historical perspective.

Despite its small size, the perirhinal cortex (PRh) plays a central role in understanding the cerebral cortex, vision, and memory; it figures in discussions of cognitive capacities as diverse as object perception, semantic knowledge, feelings of familiarity, and conscious recollection. Two conceptual constructs have encompassed PRh. The current orthodoxy incorporates PRh within the medial temporal lobe (MTL) as a memory area; an alternative considers PRh to be a sensory area with a role in both perception and memory. A historical perspective provides insight into both these ideas. PRh came to

Action video game players form more detailed representation of objects.

Previous research has clearly demonstrated action video game improvements in visual and spatial attention. The present study investigated action video game related changes in the resolution of representations for both dynamic and stationary objects by comparing video game players (VGP) and non-video game players (NVGP). In a color wheel task (adapted from Zhang & Luck, 2008) where viewers were asked to freely recall the color of briefly presented objects, we found that VGPs were more accurate than NVGPs. Furthermore, in the Multiple Identity Tracking task (Horowitz et al., 2007), we found that
