The contribution of callous-unemotional traits and conduct problems to bullying in early adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Although a lot is known about the association of conduct problems with bullying, less attention has been paid to co-occurring traits, such as callous-unemotional (CU) traits that might additionally contribute to the risk of engaging in bullying. This study investigated the contribution of CU traits to direct and indirect bullying, alongside the contributions made by conduct problems and gender. METHODS: Seven hundred and four 11-13-year-olds completed self-report measures of callous-emotional traits and psychopathology, including conduct problems. Peer-report measures of direct an

Prevalence of comorbid psychiatric disorders among people with autism spectrum disorder: An umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

With ever-increasing prevalence of various mental disorders worldwide, a comprehensive evaluation of the prevalence of co-occurring psychiatric disorders among individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is needed to strengthen the knowledge base. This umbrella review aims to summarize the current evidence on the prevalence of comorbid psychiatric disorders among people with ASD. A systematic search of 12 major databases and additional sources was conducted. Any systematically conducted narrative, qualitative, or meta-analytic review reporting the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among

Evidence for use of mood stabilizers and anticonvulsants in the treatment of nonaffective disorders in children and adolescents.

Mood stabilizers and anticonvulsants have been frequently used to control behaviors in children and adolescent with nonaffective disorders. The purpose of this study was to review the literature to evaluate the evidence of these agents as treatment options in this subset of patients. We reviewed all the literature between 1949 and 2009 on the use of anticonvulsants and mood stabilizers in controlling severe behavior dysregulation and aggression in child and adolescent who do not meet the criteria for any mood disorder. The review revealed a total of 19 studies. Of the different mood stabilizer

Focused and automatic subtypes of skin picking disorder.

OBJECTIVE: While prior studies have analyzed Skin Picking Disorder as a unitary condition, little research has been done examining clinical and neurocognitive characteristics of specific subtypes. The objective of this study is to analyze differences in impulsivity, emotional regulation, symptom severity, cognitive performance, and the presence of comorbid psychiatric conditions between focused and automatic subtypes of Skin Picking Disorder. METHODS: 83 adults aged 18-65 with skin picking disorder were enrolled at the University of Chicago and separated into 4 skin picking subtype groups bas

Psychological characteristics of over- and undercontrolled violent offenders.

Megargee (1966, 1973) has predicted a number of concomitant social, behavioral, and psychological differences between chronically undercontrolled and chronically overcontrolled violent individuals. Attempts to validate his theory, however, have resulted in seriously inconsistent findings, possibly because of the use of a measure to classify violent subjects that is of seemingly dubious validity--the Overcontrolled Hostility (OH) Scale (Megargee, Cook, & Mendelsohn, 1967). The present study used a different strategy--the classification of subjects by expert raters on the basis of extensive case

Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by motor symptoms, but focused and extensive research in the last years has provided new knowledge in the field of non-motor symptoms. Non-motor symptoms include neuropsychiatric symptoms such as depression, anxiety, psychosis, apathy, impulse control disorders, and occur in the majority of patients with PD. They are associated with impaired quality of life for patients and relatives, additional deterioration of function and increased use of health resources. Medical and surgical therapies commonly used for treatment of PD can induce or worsen such sym

Comprehensive Review and Meta-Analysis of Psychological and Pharmacological Treatment for Intermittent Explosive Disorder: Insights From Both Case Studies and Randomized Controlled Trials.

Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) is characterized by sudden, disproportionate outbursts of anger that can severely impact individuals' quality of life, causing difficulties in maintaining relationships, issues at work or school and potential legal troubles. This study aimed to systematically review and meta-analyse the effectiveness of psychological and pharmacological treatments for IED, drawing insights from both case studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs). A total of 12 RCTs and 14 case studies were included in this comprehensive analysis. The meta-analysis revealed that psych

Personality disorder and violence: making the link through risk formulation.

The extant research demonstrates that the combination of personality disorder and violence implies severe dysfunction, poor responsivity to treatment, more serious and persistent violence, and higher recidivism rates. Thus, it comes as no surprise that personality disorder is included in many of the available guidelines for assessing and managing violence. Unsurprisingly, the combination of personality pathology and violence frequently presents the greatest challenge to services, even those in whom violence risk assessment and management practice is established and routine. Conceptual and meth

Impulse Control Disorders in Patients With Hyperprolactinemia on Dopamine Agonist Therapy-How Concerned Should We Be?

OBJECTIVE: Dopamine agonists (DAs), including cabergoline and bromocriptine, are the mainstay of treatment for prolactinomas. An underappreciated adverse effect associated with DAs is impulse control disorders (ICDs), characterized by the development of compulsive behaviors, including hypersexuality, pathological gambling, binge eating, and compulsive shopping, among others, which can negatively impact patients' and families' lives. This article reviews the prevalence, risk factors, presumed pathophysiology, and diagnostic and management strategies for ICDs in hyperprolactinemic patients treat

Impulse control disorder: Review on clinical, pharmacologic, and genetic risk factors.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms, among which impulse control disorders behaviors (ICD) emerge as significant non-motor manifestations. ICD in PD patients, including pathological gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive buying, among others, lead to considerable impairment and reduced quality of life. This review aims to explore the multifaceted risk factors associated with ICD in PD patients, including clinical, pharmacological, and genetic aspects, to enhance early identification, prevention, and management strat

Increased creativity associated with dopamine agonist therapy: A case report and short review of the literature.

Impulse control disorder (ICD) has been linked to dopamine agonist use in patients with Parkinson's disease. Increased creativity is another cognitive side effect of dopaminergic therapy. While ICD is well recognized in the literature, enhanced creativity as a positive phenomenon is underreported because it does not negatively affect the patients' quality of life. Herein, we report a case of a 49-year-old man with Parkinson's disease who developed enhanced creativity expressed by the acquisition of multiple, new artistic skills with ropinirole treatment. He spent a significant amount of time o

Impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease: Review of pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical features, management, and future challenges.

Impulsive-compulsive behavior (ICB) in Parkinson's disease (PD) suggests a combination of impulse control disorders (ICDs), such as pathological gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive eating, excessive buying, and compulsive behaviors, such as punding, dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS), hoarding, and hobbyism. Hypersexuality and gambling are common in male patients while compulsive buying is common in women patients. Recent studies reveal the prevalence of ICB to be more than 25% among the PD patients. The nigrostriatal, mesocortical, and mesolimbic dopaminergic pathways play a crucial role

Dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome: A comprehensive review.

Dopamine agonists are effective and widely used treatments for Parkinson disease (PD). However, patients on dopamine agonists may experience significant side effects which necessitate dose tapering or discontinuation. Dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome (DAWS) is a complication that affects up to 19% of PD patients who undergo a dopamine agonist taper. It was initially described in 2010 as a severe stereotypical cluster of psychiatric and physical symptoms occurring with dopamine agonist withdrawal. Identified risk factors for DAWS include impulse control behavior disorders (ICD) and higher d
