Measles virus in otosclerosis and the specific immune response of the inner ear.

Histologic and immunohistochemical studies of otosclerotic lesions have shown that there is a chronic inflammatory reaction of the otic capsule with bone resorption resulting from vascular invasion accompanied by inflammatory cells. During the active lytic stage of otosclerosis, paramyxoviral structures have been identified by electron microscopy and measles virus antigen expression by immunohistochemistry. Recently, measles virus related sequences have been detected in tissue of otosclerotic lesions. Because the otosclerotic focus has a close relation to the perilymphatic space, the expressio

Congenital malformation of the inner ear and recurrent meningitis. A case report.

Congenital deformities of the inner ear can be associated with meningitis and varying degrees of hearing loss or deafness. Recurrent periods of meningitis, sometimes lethal, are due to communication between the middle ear cavity and the subarachnoid space. Different types of congenital dysplasia have been classified earlier and we report a 3-year-old girl with unilateral deafness, episodes of meningitis and a malformation of the inner ear and the footplate of the stapes.

Studies of inner ear blood flow in animals and human beings.

This article reviews current studies on inner ear blood flow, discusses their relevance to the maintenance of normal homeostasis of the inner ear, reports for the first time clear changes in fundamental properties of cochlear blood flow in the chronic hydropic ear, and describes the potential of applying laser Doppler flowmetry technology to the measurement of inner ear blood flow in human beings. Studies of the guinea pig in which perfusion pressure is varied demonstrate a broad range of autoregulatory capabilities of the inner ear vasculature. Gain factors range from 0.76 and higher for reco

Azathioprine in combination with steroids in the treatment of autoimmune inner-ear disease.

A total of twelve patients with a relatively uncommon form of progressive sensorineural deafness (autoimmune inner-ear disease) were treated orally with 1 mg/kg azathioprine, once daily, and with 30 mg prednisolone, every other day, for 4 weeks. Statistically significant increases in the ability to hear pure tones or in discrimination on audiometry took place in 10/12 patients. This condition was initially described as 'sensorineural hearing loss', but it is now clear that the term 'autoimmune inner-ear disease' is more appropriate since the vestibular compartment as well as the cochlear compa

Theoretical and practical implications for plasmapheresis in autoimmune inner ear disease.

Immune-mediated inner ear disease, by convention called autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED), has established clinical profile guidelines for diagnosis. Treatment consists of steroid and/or cytotoxic drug immunosuppression. The role of plasmapheresis (PMP) in the treatment of AIED has not been defined. Lack of a precise serological marker prevents accurate immunological understanding. Definition is, of course, difficult in a disease whose natural history is not well delineated. Successful use of PMP in one steroid and cytotoxic drug intolerant patient with AIED led to its use in a total of eigh

[Electrocochleographic detection of the summation potential in patients with inner ear deafness].

Pre-operative information about cochlear mechanical function is a pre-requisite for intra-cochlear implants. In more than 300 pre-operative examinations we demonstrated cochlear microphonics in many patients suffering from complete inner ear deafness; we interpret this phenomenon as evidence of mechanical function of the cochlea. A summation potential in patients with sensorineural deafness is more certain proof. We have now performed thorough electrocochleography on 43 deaf patients whose acoustic nerve was intact, i.e. whose promontory test was positive. After stimulation firstly with rarefa

Another function of the inner ear: facilitation of the emetic response to poisons.

If a foot were surgically removed and it was observed that walking was then impaired, it could be concluded that the foot is part of the normal mechanism for walking and that one of the physiological functions of the foot is to facilitate walking. In seven dogs, the vestibular apparatus of the inner ear was surgically removed and it was observed that the emetic response to certain poisons was impaired. It was concluded that the inner ear is part of the normal mechanism for vomiting in response to poisons, and that one of the physiological functions of the inner ear is to facilitate the emetic

Experimental infection of the guinea pig inner ear with Toxoplasma gondii.

Based on the question whether toxoplasma gondii is a potential pathogenetic factor in sudden deafness and vertigo (especially in the acquired form of Toxoplasmosis) we started a series of investigations, dealing with direct, local, hematogenous, and intracisternal infection of the guinea pig cochlea with toxoplasma gondii. Three of ten directly inoculated and one of five hematogenously infected guinea pigs showed a severe labyrinthitis in electron and light microscopy. Thus, we could demonstrate that toxoplasma gondii is a potent pathogenetic factor in acute inner ear disturbances in laborator

The effect of noise on deoxyglucose uptake into inner ear tissues of the mouse.

The uptake of deoxyglucose into inner ear tissues was studied in the mouse. Sixty minutes after a single i.v. injection of 5 mCi 2-deoxy-D-[3H]glucose/kg body weight, stria vascularis/spiral ligament and organ of Corti as well as other body tissues were dissected and analyzed for radioactivity. Uptake into inner ear tissues was three to five times lower than into brain or heart. The ratio of deoxyglucose-6-phosphate to deoxyglucose was 60:40 and the compounds were eliminated from the inner ear with a half life of approximately 60 min. Exposure to 100 dB of white noise during the radioactive pu

[Causes of inner ear deafness; a critique of therapy (author's transl)].

In spite of recent criticisms, the diagnosis of inner ear hearing impairment is based on both pure tone thresholds and suprathreshold tests. The acoustico-facial reflex is useful only when used in conjunction with the suprathreshold tests.--Noise-induced deafness is generally confined to the higher frequencies of sound, and only exceptionally involve the middle frequencies as well. Low-tone hearing impairment may represent a partial symptom of Meniere's Disease as well as functional hearing loss. Zoster oticus produces a sensory hearing impairment but not a neural one, as might be expected fro

Purification of a carbonic anhydrase from the inner ear of the guinea pig.

A soluble carbonic anhydrase (carbonate hydro-lyase, EC 4.2.1.1) has been purified to homogeneity from the membranous lateral wall (stria vascularis, spiral ligament, spiral prominence, and outer sulcus) of the guinea-pig inner ear. About 1% of the protein of the membranous lateral wall is carbonic anhydrase. The specific activity of the enzyme in homogenates of the lateral wall is 1.6-1.8 times that of whole blood; for homogenates of the components, stria vascularis and the fraction containing the spiral ligament, the specific activities are 0.9 and 2.0 times the specific activity of whole bl

Histopathologic features of the inner ear associated with Kearns-Sayre syndrome.

We describe the histopathologic features of the inner ear in a 19-year-old girl with bilateral total deafness associated with Kearns-Sayre syndrome. The inner ear shows advanced degree of cochleo-saccular degeneration, with almost complete absence of the organ of Corti in all turns. The spiral ganglion shows a reduction of about 60% to 70% of cells, with almost complete degeneration of nerve fibers in the bony spiral lamina. PAS-positive material was found accumulated in globules between the collapsed Reissner membrane and remains of marginal cells of the stria and in the degenerated sensory c

[Morphological changes in the inner ear of alport's syndrome (author's transl)].

At the first time lightmicroscopic and electronmicroscopic findings of Alport's Syndrome after fixation 1 hour post mortem are demonstrated. The morphological findings of stria vascularis, organ of Corti and ganglion spirale are discussed and interpreted as the result of the enlarged basal membrane of the inner ear capillaries with an altered permeability similar to the thickened basal membrane in the glomerulum of Alport's Syndrome.

An EABR paradigm for assessing inner ear malformations in cochlear implantation.

BACKGROUND: Children with prelingual profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and inner ear malformations (IEM), including cochleovestibular nerve anomalies, present complex and challenging cases during cochlear implantation. Intraoperative objective assessments, such as the electric auditory brainstem response (eABR), provide crucial information on auditory pathway integrity during surgery. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To evaluate a novel intraoperative eABR paradigm in children with IEM and compare the findings with those from children with normal inner ear anatomy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Nineteen co

Foxm1 promotes differentiation of neural progenitors in the zebrafish inner ear.

During development of the vertebrate inner ear, sensory epithelia and neurons of the statoacoustic ganglion (SAG) arise from lineage-restricted progenitors that proliferate extensively before differentiating into mature post-mitotic cell types. Development of progenitors is regulated by Fgf, Wnt and Notch signaling, but how these pathways are coordinated to achieve an optimal balance of proliferation and differentiation is not well understood. Here we investigate the role in zebrafish of Foxm1, a transcription factor commonly associated with proliferation in developing tissues and tumors. Targ
