Decreasing Opioid Addiction and Diversion Using Behavioral Economics Applied Through a Digital Engagement Solution: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite strong and growing interest in ending the ongoing opioid health crisis, there has been limited success in reducing the prevalence of opioid addiction and the number of deaths associated with opioid overdoses. Further, 1 explanation for this is that existing interventions target those who are opiate-dependent but do not prevent opioid-naïve patients from becoming addicted. OBJECTIVE: Leveraging behavioral economics at the patient level could help patients successfully use, discontinue, and dispose of their opioid medications in an acute pain setting. The primary goal of thi…

Whether curse or blessing: A counterintuitive perspective on global pest thrips infestation under climatic change with implications to agricultural economics.

The improvement and application of pest models to predict yield losses is still a challenge for the scientific community. However, pest models were targeted chiefly towards scheduling scouting or pesticide applications to deal with pest infestation. Thysanoptera (thrips) significantly impact the productivity of many economically important crops worldwide. Until now, no comprehensive study is available on the global distribution of pest thrips, as well as on the extent of cropland vulnerability worldwide. Further, nothing is known about the climate change impacts on these insects. Thus the pres

The ongoing French metastatic breast cancer (MBC) cohort: the example-based methodology of the Epidemiological Strategy and Medical Economics (ESME).

PURPOSE: The currently ongoing Epidemiological Strategy and Medical Economics (ESME) research programme aims at centralising real-life data on oncology care for epidemiological research purposes. We draw on results from the metastatic breast cancer (MBC) cohort to illustrate the methodology used for data collection in the ESME research programme. PARTICIPANTS: All consecutive ≥18 years patients with MBC treatment initiated between 2008 and 2014 in one of the 18 French Comprehensive Cancer Centres were selected. Diagnostic, therapeutic and follow-up data (demographics, primary tumour, metastat…

The impact of the new antiviral regimens on patient reported outcomes and health economics of patients with chronic hepatitis C.

Hepatitis C is an important cause of chronic liver disease worldwide with an estimated 170 million people infected. Hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected patients are physically and mentally impacted by fatigue, depression and anxiety causing an impairment of health related quality of life (HRQOL), lower worker productivity and other patient reported outcomes (PROs). Although anti-HCV regimens containing first generation direct acting antiviral agents (DAAs) were associated with significant side effects, the second generation DAAs, sofosbuvir (SOF) and simeprevir (SMV), are associated with fewer si

Economic evaluation and randomised controlled trial of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: UK collaborative trial. The Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Economics Working Group.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the resource implications and short term outcomes of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and conventional management for term babies with severe respiratory failure. DESIGN: Cost effectiveness evaluation alongside a randomised controlled trial. SETTING: 55 approved recruiting hospitals in the United Kingdom. These hospitals provided conventional management, but infants randomised to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation were transferred to one of five specialist centres. SUBJECTS: 185 mature newborn infants (gestational age at birth >35 weeks, birth weight >2 kg) with se

Table salt as a salivary stimulant and buffer substitute in calf diets: Effects on growth performance, rumen fermentation, and economics.

This study evaluated sodium chloride (NaCl) as a natural salivary stimulant and a substitute for conventional buffers in calf diets. We hypothesized that varying the amount and method of NaCl provision would modulate salivation, rumen fermentation, and growth performance. Fifty Holstein calves (46.43 ± 2.19 kg BW; 10 ± 5 days old) were assigned to five treatments in a completely randomized design: T1 (Control, NRC-salt mixed in feed); T2 (NRC-salt, 15% pre-fed); T3 (2 × NRC-salt, mixed); T4 (2 × NRC-salt, 15% pre-fed); T5 (NRC-salt + 0.5% NaHCO₃ buffer). Treatments significantly (P < 0.05) aff

Effect of wet feeding on performance, blood plasma indices, intestinal histomorphometry, and economics of broiler chickens under hot climatic conditions.

The study aimed to investigate the impact of wet feeding on broiler chicken performance and intestinal histomorphometry. The research was conducted at the Veterinary College, Udaipur, India, using 144 commercial broiler chicks from day 1 to 6 weeks of age. The chicks were divided randomly into three experimental groups, each with four replicates comprising 48 birds. The control group (G1) was fed dry; while, group 2 (G2) received wet feed supplemented with 1.00 g water per g of feed and group 3 (G3) received wet feed supplemented with 1.20 g water per g of feed. Results revealed that G3 had si

Physiological Effects of Psychological Interventions Among Persons with Financial Stress: A Systematic Review, Meta-analysis, and Introduction to Psychophysiological Economics.

It is known that economic problems can cause psychological stress, and that psychological stress causes physiological changes often linked to disease. Here we report a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies on physiological effects of psychological treatment for individuals with economic problems. Of 5071 papers in our initial PsycInfo search, we identified 16 papers on physiological effects for psychological treatment of the economically stressed. We found 11 controlled studies, among which we found a small to moderate significant effect size, Hedges' g = 0.319, p < 0.001. The largest

Economics of drug-coated balloons for arteriovenous fistula stenosis in Japan and Korea based on the IN.PACT AV access trial.

AIM: The recent IN.PACT AV Access study found drug-coated balloon therapy to be associated with reduced reinterventions compared to percutaneous transluminal angioplasty using standard balloons in the management of arteriovenous fistula stenosis. The economic implications of drug-coated balloon use in Asia, including Japan and Korea, remain unknown. METHODS: A decision-analytic model was developed to calculate strategy-specific costs for Korea and Japan through 5-year follow-up. The analysis assumed maintained therapy benefit beyond current trial follow-up of 1 year in the base case, with sev

Complex relationships between Aedes vectors, socio-economics and dengue transmission-Lessons learned from a case-control study in northeastern Thailand.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Dengue fever is an important public health concern in most tropical and subtropical countries, and its prevention and control rest on vector surveillance and control. However, many aspects of dengue epidemiology remain unclear; in particular, the relationship between Aedes vector abundance and dengue transmission risk. This study aims to identify entomological and immunological indices capable of discriminating between dengue case and control (non-case) houses, based on the assessment of candidate indices, as well as individual and household characteristics, as potential

[Off-label drug use of the misoprostol in gynecology & obstetrics: From a medico-economics benefit to a potential legal risk].

The scandal of the Mediator® case led the legislature to take measures in order to regulate off-label drugs prescriptions. Indeed the law issued in December 29th, 2011 on strengthening the safety of drugs and all derivative health products came to pave the way for an "over-cautious" practice of medicine in line with the precautionary principle erected as a constitutional principle. The supervision of off-label prescribing has had a direct impact on the exercise of the medical profession and has resurrected the issues related to the freedom of prescription, the obligation to provide information

A review of the economics of the prevention and control of rabies. Part 1: Global impact and rabies in humans.

The existing literature on the economics of rabies and its control can be characterised as a poorly documented set of cost estimates with insufficient information to allow replication of the analyses. Most articles have numerous 'violations' of the standard recommended procedures for assessing the burden of disease and the cost and benefits of interventions. Per capita costs are often crudely extrapolated from small to large populations without allowing for geographic differences in incidence. Furthermore, most studies do not distinguish between financial charges and true economic costs, and o…

Estimating the human development impacts and economic returns from an adolescent cash 'plus' programme in Kenya: An economic modelling study.

The Government of Kenya plans to scale-up an adolescent-focused cash 'plus' programme to improve educational attainment and prevent adolescent pregnancy. We aimed to estimate the programme's impacts, economic returns, and cost-effectiveness using model-based economic evaluation. We modelled the delivery of conditional cash transfers 'plus' adolescent clubs, community conversations, parenting support and psychosocial support to poor adolescents in nine selected counties from 2026 to 2029. Two scenarios were compared: a baseline in which intervention variables remained constant at 2025 levels, a

Economic Impact of Timely Systemic Treatment of Psoriatic Disease in Comorbidity Risk Reduction: Literature Review and (Early) Economic Assessment.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriatic disease, including psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, is associated with increased risk of comorbidities (cardiovascular disease, mental health disorders, type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity), placing substantial burden on patients and health systems. We aimed to quantify the lifetime economic burden of these four comorbidities in populations with moderate-to-severe psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. We subsequently estimated the potential comorbidity-related gross cost offsets from timely systemic therapy across three diverse country settings (Denmark, the USA and Vie

The Impact of an Economic Empowerment Intervention on Economic Security among AIDS-Orphaned Adolescents in Southern Uganda: the Moderating Role of Depression.

Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) bears a disproportionate HIV/AIDS burden, with adolescents heavily affected. Parental loss to AIDS has orphaned millions, exacerbating economic and psychosocial challenges. Economic empowerment interventions (EEIs) promote asset accumulation and financial stability, but the role of depression in moderating their effectiveness remains underexplored. This study examines the impact of an EEI on economic security among HIV/AIDS-orphaned adolescents in Southern Uganda, exploring depression as a moderator. Data from 1383 HIV-orphaned adolescents (10-16 years) were collected

Micro-Nanoplastics Significantly Increase Adverse Events and Economic Burden Associated With Carotid Endarterectomy: A Health Economic Modelling Evaluation.

BACKGROUNDS: Micro-nanoplastics (MNPs) are increasingly detected in human cardiovascular tissues and have been linked to higher rates of adverse cardiovascular events. However, the clinical and economic implications of MNP contamination for vascular surgery populations remain unclear. We aimed to model the potential impact of MNPs on outcomes and healthcare costs among Australian patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy. METHODS: We performed a modelling study using secondary data. Rates of carotid plaque MNP contamination and associated risks of stroke, myocardial infarction, and death wer

Economic burden and cost-effectiveness of treatments for open tibia fractures in Malawi: Economic analysis of a multicentre prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Open tibia fractures result in substantial lifelong disability for patients, and are expensive to treat. As the injury typically affects young working men, the societal costs from open tibia fractures are likely to also be high in low income countries, but remain largely unknown. We therefore investigated the overall societal costs and cost-effectiveness of different orthopaedic treatments at one year following an open tibia fracture in Malawi. METHODS: This study was a cost-utility analysis nested in a prospective cohort study from the healthcare- and societal-payer perspectives
