Childrearing discipline and violence in developing countries.

The present study examined the prevalence and country-level correlates of 11 responses to children's behavior, including nonviolent discipline, psychological aggression, and physical violence, as well as endorsement of the use of physical punishment, in 24 countries using data from 30,470 families with 2- to 4-year-old children that participated in UNICEF's Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey. The prevalence of each response varied widely across countries, as did the amount of variance accounted for by country in relation to each response. Country-level indicators of life expectancy, educational

Environmental stressors and violence: lead and polychlorinated biphenyls.

Many environmental risk factors for antisocial and violent behavior have been described. In recent years, this topic has become widely researched in the fields of environmental health, psychology, sociology, and many other disciplines. The results from a myriad of studies have shown that the etiologies of violent and aggressive behavior range from definitive biological environmental stressors like lead or polychlorinated biphenyls to various socio-cultural environmental stressors, such as social, economic, and racial factors. The aim of this paper is (a) to provide an overview of the specific

Spatial model of Ebola outbreaks contained by behavior change.

The West African Ebola (2014-2016) epidemic caused an estimated 11.310 deaths and massive social and economic disruption. The epidemic was comprised of many local outbreaks of varying sizes. However, often local outbreaks recede before the arrival of international aid or susceptible depletion. We modeled Ebola virus transmission under the effect of behavior changes acting as a local inhibitor. A spatial model is used to simulate Ebola epidemics. Our findings suggest that behavior changes can explain why local Ebola outbreaks recede before substantial international aid was mobilized during the

[Studies of cost/effectiveness of pharmacological and psychological treatment of anxiety disorders: a literature review].

This article reviews the literature on economic studies of evidence-based cognitive-behavioral treatment and pharmacotherapy for anxiety disorders. Articles were identified through electronic search of medical and psychological databases between 1980 and 2008. Seven studies were identified and included panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobia and social phobia. Results show that evidence-based cognitive-behavior therapy and pharmacotherapy are cost-effective, usually more than usual care. Although the evidence base needs to be strengthened, it appears beneficial in increas

Predicting risk-taking behavior from prefrontal resting-state activity and personality.

Risk-taking is subject to considerable individual differences. In the current study, we tested whether resting-state activity in the prefrontal cortex and trait sensitivity to reward and punishment can help predict risk-taking behavior. Prefrontal activity at rest was assessed in seventy healthy volunteers using electroencephalography, and compared to their choice behavior on an economic risk-taking task. The Behavioral Inhibition System/Behavioral Activation System scale was used to measure participants' trait sensitivity to reward and punishment. Our results confirmed both prefrontal resting

Barriers and facilitators to breast cancer screening among women in Côte d'Ivoire: A qualitative study.

This study examines breast cancer screening behaviors among women in a working-class neighborhood of Bouaké, Côte d'Ivoire, within the context of economic insecurity and therapeutic pluralism, where biomedical, traditional, and religious care practices coexist. A qualitative interpretive approach was used, based on 23 semi-structured interviews with women aged 18 and above, selected through purposive sampling and analyzed thematically. The findings reveal uneven knowledge of screening, particularly among older and economically vulnerable women, due to limited media exposure and social isolatio

Exploring the association of time-inconsistent preferences with smoking behavior: A cross-sectional survey study from Sichuan, China.

INTRODUCTION: The high prevalence of tobacco use in China has led to a heavy social burden. There have been many studies on smoking behavior in China, but few have explored it from the perspective of behavioral economics. This study investigated the association between time-inconsistent preferences and smoking behavior. METHODS: We conducted a household-based cross-sectional survey in Sichuan Province, southwestern China, in 2022. Participants were selected using multistage stratified sampling. Data were collected through face-to-face, questionnaire-based household surveys, yielding 5446 vali

Unraveling the invisible leptospirosis in mainland Southeast Asia and its fate under climate change.

Leptospirosis is a neglected waterborne zoonosis of growing concern in tropical and low-income regions. Endemic in Southeast Asia, its distribution and environmental factors such as climate controlling its dynamics remain poorly documented. In this paper, we investigate for the first time the current and future leptospirosis burden at a local scale in mainland Southeast Asia. We adjusted machine-learning models on incidence reports from the Thai surveillance system to identify environmental determinants of leptospirosis. The explanatory variables tested in our models included climate, topograp

The Neuropsychiatric Inventory: Development and Applications.

REASONS FOR THE STUDY: The Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) has been used for studies of neuropsychiatric symptoms in neurodegenerative disorders for the past 25 years. This article reviews the history of the development and application of the NPI. MAIN FINDINGS: The NPI consists of 10 (or 12) items that are assayed with questions, subquestions, and ratings of frequency and severity. The NPI has been shown to be valid and reliable. The NPI has been translated into approximately 40 languages; it has 4 of versions designed for different clinical applications. The NPI studies show contrasting pr

Although dopamine replacement therapy has been used in Parkinson's disease since the 1960s, it is only recently that behavioral disorders associated with these drugs have been described. Gathered under the term "behavioral addiction", they include impulse control disorders, dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS), and punding. Whereas addiction per se occurs almost exclusively with levodopa, impulse control disorders appear preferentially during dopamine agonist therapy. The prevalence of these disorders is estimated to be 10-17% in Parkinson's disease, a rate far higher than in the general popu

Mechanistic and translational insights from preclinical cocaine choice procedures on the economic substitutability of cocaine and nondrug reinforcers.

Substance use disorders are increasingly being conceptualized as behavioral misallocation disorders; however, the neurobiological determinants of this behavioral misallocation are poorly understood. Cocaine use disorder (CUD) develops as a result of behavior being disproportionally directed towards the procurement and use of cocaine at the expense of behaviors maintained by more adaptive, nondrug reinforcers (i.e., job, family). Preclinical cocaine-vs-nondrug reinforcer choice procedures are uniquely positioned to 1) elucidate the biological mechanisms of drug and nondrug reinforcement and 2)

Comparisons of HIV-Affected and Non-HIV-Affected Families Over Time.

This study compares HIV-affected families and their non-HIV-affected neighbors' behavioral health outcomes and family conflict. To compare two groups from the same neighborhoods at four points over 18 months, mothers with HIV (MLH) (N=167) and their school-age children (age 6 to 20) were recruited from clinical care settings in Los Angeles, CA and neighborhood control mothers (NCM) without HIV (N=204) were recruited from modal neighborhoods. In addition, children living at home who were 12 years and older were recruited. We assessed parenting behaviors, family conflict, mental health, sexual b

Low infant negative emotionality buffers infants from family economic stress.

The present study examined the indirect association between family economic hardship and infant socioemotional competence and behavior problems via food insecurity, maternal depressive symptoms, and maternal sensitivity. The moderating role of infant temperament on these family stress processes was also examined. The sample included 299 mother-infant dyads followed at four time points from pregnancy until infants were 14 months old. Mothers reported demographics, household food insecurity, and depressive symptoms during the third trimester of pregnancy. At 2 months postpartum, mothers reported

Anabolic-androgenic steroids alter decision making in a balanced rodent model of the Iowa gambling task.

Anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) abuse is implicated in maladaptive decision making such as increased risk taking and problem gambling. Endogenous testosterone correlates with economic risk taking in both the stock market (Coates & Herbert, 2008) and in the laboratory, as measured by the Iowa Gambling Task (Stanton, Liening, & Schultheiss, 2011). Additionally, AAS use has been associated with problem gambling behavior in adolescents (Proimos, DuRant, Pierce, & Goodman, 1998). Thus, AAS may impair economic decision making. However, studies of human AAS users cannot control for preexisting risk
