Complete denture prosthodontics in children with ectodermal dysplasia: review of principles and techniques.

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a hereditary condition in which a minimum of two ectodermal structures fail to develop. Anodontia, or hypodontia, is one of the most common manifestations of this condition. As a result, it is critical that prosthodontic habilitation or rehabilitation is started early. Complete dentures are a simple, inexpensive, and reversible option. Several case reports have demonstrated the successful use of complete dentures in children with ED. However, few articles have exclusively addressed the principles of complete denture prosthodontics in these individuals. This report …

Oral rehabilitation with endosseous implants in a child with ectodermal dysplasia: a case report.

AIM: The purpose of this article is to report the clinical course of a 12-year-old child with ectodermal dysplasia who was treated with an implant-supported overdenture for the mandible and an overdenture for the maxilla. CASE REPORT: Two dental implants were placed in the canine regions of the mandible. The maxillary teeth were prepared for the milled copings. Because the preparation of parallel walls was difficult, near-parallelism with an angle of convergence or taper of approximately 5 degrees was achieved. The cervical third of the teeth was prepared to be as parallel as possible to one …

Mutations in EDARADD account for a small proportion of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia cases.

BACKGROUND: Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is characterized by abnormal development of the eccrine sweat glands, hair and teeth. The X-linked form of the disease, caused by mutations in the EDA gene, represents the majority of HED cases. Autosomal dominant and recessive forms occasionally occur and result from mutations in at least two other genes: EDAR and EDARADD. EDARADD interacts with the TAB2/TRAF6/TAK1 complex, which is necessary for NF-kappaB activation by EDAR. OBJECTIVES: To determine frequency of EDARADD, TRAF6, TAB2 and TAK1 mutations in HED. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We hav…

A Mongolian patient with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with a novel P121S variant in EDARADD.

INTRODUCTION: Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is a genetic disorder characterized by diminished or a lack of sweating, congenital missing teeth, and sparse or absent hair. Three genes, EDA, EDAR, and EDARADD, all related to tumor necrosis factor signaling, have been reported as responsible genes for this disorder. Among them, the largest numbers of mutations have been identified in EDA, and only two mutations identified in EDARADD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: DNA analysis of EDA, EDAR, and EDARADD was performed on a Mongolian patient by polymerase chain reaction-direct sequencing. RESULTS: The …

18q-syndrome and ectodermal dysplasia syndrome: description of a child and his family.

The 18q- syndrome [MIM #601808] is a terminal deletion of the long arm of chromosome 18. The most common deletion extends from region q21 to qter. We report here a nine-year-old boy possessing a simple 18q- deletion who had abnormalities of the brain, skull, face, tooth, hair, bone, and skin, plus joint laxity, tongue palsy, subtle sensoneural deafness, mental and speech delay, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), tic, and restless legs syndromes. His karyotype was 46, XY, del (18)(q21.31-qter). The size of the deletion was approximately 45 cM. Most of these abnormalities were not

[Early implant treatment of a child with anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia. Apropos of a case].

The purpose of this article is to report the clinical course and follow-up of a child with ectodermal dysplasia who was treated with implants surgery very early. Different possibilities for prosthetic restoration in the anodontic child are reviewed. Tolerance was excellent. Good cover of the implant was achieved at four years. We propose early implantation reconstruction surgery for these exceptional cases. A prospective multicentric study of this condition would be useful.

Vasopressin and gonadotropin deficiency in a boy with the ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome.

A boy presented with ectrodactyly (lobster claw deformity), bilateral cleft lip and palate, semilobar holoprosencephaly and microcephaly, associated with congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and central diabetes insipidus. Other aspects of pituitary function were normal. We suggest that the ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome can be associated with a variety of hypothalamo-pituitary dysfunctions, in addition to the already described isolated growth hormone deficiency.

Craniotubular dysplasia with severe postnatal growth retardation, mental retardation, ectodermal dysplasia, and loose skin: Lenz-Majewski-like syndrome.

The heterogeneous group of craniotubular dysplasias is characterized by modeling errors of the craniofacial and tubular bones. Some conditions in this category cause not only skeletal abnormalities but also a variety of mesoectodermal dysplasias, as exemplified in Lenz-Majewski syndrome (MIM 151050), which comprises craniodiaphyseal dysplasia, failure to thrive, mental retardation, proximal symphalangism, enamel hypoplasia, and loose skin. We report on a boy with a hitherto unknown multisystem disorder, including skeletal changes that were regarded as a form of craniotubular dysplasia. The pat…

Prosthetic and implant rehabilitation in hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia: A 13-year follow-up.

This clinical report describes the long-term oral rehabilitation of a male patient with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED), a congenital disorder characterized by hypodontia, hypotrichosis, and hypohidrosis. At age 3, the patient presented with only 2 conical teeth and total edentulism in the remaining arches. A multidisciplinary, staged treatment plan was implemented from early childhood to adulthood that included preserving erupted teeth, interim prostheses, orthodontics, and early strategic implant placement adapted to craniofacial growth. Initial mandibular implants were placed at age…

Ocular Manifestations of Ectrodactyly-Ectodermal Dysplasia-Cleft Palate (EEC) Syndrome: A Case Report.

Ocular manifestations are common associations of ectrodactyly-Ectodermal dysplasia-cleft palate (EEC) syndrome. We would like to report a case of a 48-year-old patient with EEC syndrome who manifested ocular and extraocular signs and symptoms. The ophthalmic findings in this patient included chronic blepharitis and absence of meibomian gland. There was also a presence of hazy cornea with vascularized corneal stroma and symblepharon involving the lower lid. Systemic conditions showed generalized dry and scaly skin with hand-foot split deformity. Therefore, ophthalmologists should be alert to sp…

Implant-supported Oral Rehabilitation in Child with Ectodermal Dysplasia - 4-year Follow-up.

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is an anomaly determined by genetic factors that alter ectodermal structures such as skin, hair, nails, glands, and teeth. Children affected by this condition require extensive, comprehensive, and multidisciplinary treatment. An 8-year-old female patient visited the Dentistry Clinic of the Federal University of Santa Catarina with the chief complaint of multiple missing teeth. The mother reported that the patient had ED. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed the congenital absence of several primary and permanent teeth and tooth germs. Subsequent oral rehabil…

Oral health considerations in a patient with oligosymptomatic ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-cleft syndrome.

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-cleft (EEC) syndrome-a complex, pleiotropic disorder resulting in multiple congenital anomalies-has an unpredictable clinical expression and is typically manifested as an autosomal-dominant trait. This article presents a rare case of oligosymptomatic EEC syndrome in a 19-year-old man who exhibited atypical dental findings but no cleft lip or palate. This article is intended to create awareness about this rare syndrome and highlight the role of oral healthcare specialists in improving the quality of life for patients with EEC.

Cavernous angioma after chemotherapy for desmoplastic/nodular medulloblastoma associated with anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

PURPOSE: While cavernous angioma (CVA) after cranial irradiation has been documented, its development after high-dose chemotherapy with autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT) has not. We present a patient with desmoplastic/nodular medulloblastoma (DNMB) associated with anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (AED) who developed CVA 2 years after high-dose chemotherapy and PBSCT. METHODS: A 1-year-old boy with ingravescent vomiting was admitted to our institute. He presented with a large head, a depressed nasal bridge, low-set ears, thick lips with peg-shaped teeth, hypohidrosis…

Unusual manifestations of ectodermal dysplasia-syndactyly syndrome type I in two Yemeni siblings.

Ectodermal dysplasias (EDs) are a group of genodermatoses characterized by malformations of tissues derived from the ectoderm, including the skin, its appendages (hair, nails, sweat glands), teeth, and the breasts. Ectodermal dysplasia syndactyly syndrome (EDSS) is a rare, newly described type of ED involving syndactyly. We report 2 Yemeni siblings with typical EDSS manifestations, including bilateral, partial cutaneous syndactyly of the fingers and toes; sparse, coarse, brittle scalp hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes; and conical, widely spaced teeth with enamel notches. In addition, the siblings…
