Self-Regulating Interfacial-Boosted Electrolytes for Fast-Charging and Long-Life Aqueous Batteries.

Aqueous batteries are promising for large-scale energy storage due to inherent safety and low cost; however, their long-term cycling stability is fundamentally limited by interfacial degradation. Although existing strategies such as "water-in-salt" and water-organic hybrid electrolytes can widen the electrochemical stability window (ESW), trace water electrolysis still occurs at the interface, leading to gradual pH drift, electrode dissolution, and eventual battery failure. Here, we propose a self-regulating interfacial-boosted electrolyte that effectively addresses these challenges. By introd…

Valency driven modulation of SDS-insulin complexation: A physicochemical study with biorelevant electrolytes.

Electrolytes are more than passive participants in biological systems; they actively shape molecular interactions critical to drug delivery and protein stability. This study investigates how the valency of physiologically relevant cations (Na+, K+, Zn2+, and Co2+) modulates the complexation between sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), a model anionic surfactant, and insulin, a key therapeutic protein. Using conductometric, tensiometric, and UV-Visible spectroscopic techniques, we reveal that divalent cations significantly enhance micellization and strengthen SDS insulin binding. Conductivity data sh…

Solvation-Regulated Ultrafast Formation of Organohydrogel Electrolytes for Subzero Flexible Zinc-Ion Batteries.

The scalable fabrication of covalently cross-linked hydrogel electrolytes is often constrained by the energy-intensive nature of conventional initiation methods, which rely on heat or ultraviolet irradiation. Such approaches not only consume significant energy but also provide limited control over polymer network formation, frequently necessitating additional co-solvents or additives to meet mechanical and electrochemical requirements. Herein, we present a solvation regulation strategy that decouples radical polymerization from external energy inputs through solvation-state engineering of the …

Manipulating Ion Chemistry in Biphasic Electrolytes Toward Durable High-Energy Zinc-Bromine Batteries.

Zinc-bromine batteries (ZBBs) are considered a promising candidate for long-duration energy storage, but their practical implementation is critically hampered by the crossover of polybromides. This bottleneck can be alleviated by deploying aqueous-organic biphasic electrolytes, which leverage the pronounced difference in polybromide solubility between two immiscible phases to achieve effective confinement. However, a profound mechanistic understanding of ion-specific functions in such systems remains elusive, and the full-cell performance still falls short of commercial requirements. Herein, w…

Multi-Li+ Coordination for Superior Room-Temperature Ionic Conductivity in PEO Solid Electrolytes.

Ion transport in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) electrolytes is severely constrained by sluggish Li+ mobility arising from tight chelation of ether oxygens, and by insufficient lithium salt dissociation. Inspired by polycarboxylate ether (PCE) superplasticizers in cement, we demonstrate phosphonate-functionalized PCE (P-PCE) could overcome both limitations. The electron-rich -PO3 2- groups could liberate Li+ from the strong Li+-PEO chelation and promote efficient salt dissociation without trapping Li+. Instead, they facilitate rapid Li+ migration through a unique multi-Li+ coordination mechanism, …

Atmosphere Adaptive Lithium-Air Batteries Enabled by Thermodynamically Self-Limiting Salt-Free Electrolytes.

The practical viability of lithium-air batteries (LABs) in semi-open systems is severely hindered by the hygroscopic nature of extrinsic lithium salts, which trigger parasitic reactions. Herein, we report a shift from traditional salt addition to an intrinsic ion-generation strategy by designing a thermodynamically self-limiting, salt-free electrolyte (SLE). By harnessing the interfacial reactivity between EMIMTFSI and the lithium anode, we elucidate a dual-pathway mechanism involving radical cleavage and dealkylation coordination. This in situ self-lithiation kinetically halts after involving

Urine electrolytes guide treatment of Gitelman syndrome and recurrent syncope-A case report.

Syncope is a common reason for inpatient admission. Few case studies describe an association between syncope and Gitelman syndrome (GS). Herein, we present a case of a woman with hypokalemia and recurrent syncope which eventually led to a diagnosis of GS. A physiologic approach to urine electrolyte interpretation informed clinical decisions to diagnose and manage complications associated with GS. Genetic testing for renal electrolyte transport-related gene mutations among patients with recurrent syncope and electrolyte abnormalities may be diagnostic.

The search for superionic solid-state electrolytes using a physics-informed generative model.

The discovery of superionic solid-state electrolytes for cation batteries is currently limited by the range of materials available in online materials databases. Generative artificial intelligence approaches have recently been applied to overcome this limitation and explore unknown stoichiometries and structures, but efficiently generating candidates that satisfy strict stability criteria remains challenging. Here we introduce a physics-informed hierarchical generative framework that leverages symmetry-aware crystallographic principles to systematically explore molecular configurations, lattic…

Graft-to/Graft-From Synthesis of Janus Graft Copolymers for Bottlebrush Polymer Electrolytes.

Janus graft copolymers, which combine the characteristics of block and graft copolymers, have been used in the fields of reaction catalysis, surface modification, and drug delivery, but their applications in lithium batteries have rarely been reported. Herein, Janus graft copolymers with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polystyrene (PS) side chains are synthesized by combining reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) methods and doped with lithium salts to fabricate Janus bottlebrush polymer electrolytes (PEG-J-PS). The…

Borate-Water-Based 3D-Slime Interface Quasi-Solid Electrolytes for Li-ion Batteries.

The development of solid-state batteries (SSBs) that do not use hazardous materials as electrolytes and are not flammable is progressing rapidly, however the production of sulfide-based SSBs requires strict low-dew-point control due to their high reactivity with atmospheric moisture and the concern of generating hydrogen sulfide, and several issues remain in terms of the cost and recyclability. Thus, low-cost facile materials and low-CO2-emission processes are necessary. With regard to oxide-type SSBs, which are attracting attention for their safety, there are issues with manufacturing suitabi…

Predictive analysis of catecholamines and electrolytes for recurrence of orthostatic intolerance in children.

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic intolerance (OI) is usually mediated by the autonomic nerve and most often happens in the upright position. However, it can also occur in other positions and can be relieved by lying down while likely to have another attack after relief. In the current study, we aim to evaluate the predictive effect of catecholamines and electrolytes on the recurrence of OI in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Children who were diagnosed with vasovagal syncope (VVS), postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS), and VVS combined with POTS were enrolled in this retrospective study and were follo…

Arrhythmia in chronic hemodialysis as a function of predialysis electrolytes and interdialytic interval.

INTRODUCTION: People with end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis are at increased risk for death due to arrhythmia associated with the prolonged interdialytic interval that typically spans the weekend, with bradycardia being the arrhythmia most closely associated with sudden death. In this prospective observational study we assessed whether predialysis fluid and electrolytes values including hyperkalemia are risk factors for the arrhythmias associated with the prolonged interdialytic interval. METHODS: Sixty patients on hemodialysis with a history of hyperkalemia underwent cardiac monitoring…

Innovative Approaches to Li-Argyrodite Solid Electrolytes for All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries.

ConspectusAs the world transitions away from fossil energy to green and renewable energy, electrochemical energy storage increasingly becomes a vital component of the mix to conduct this transition. The central goal in developing next-generation batteries is to maximize the gravimetric and volumetric energy density and battery cycle life and improve safety. All solid-state batteries using a solid electrolyte and a lithium metal anode represent one of the most promising technologies that can achieve this goal. Highly conductive solid electrolytes (>10 mS·cm-1) are the key component to remove th…

Revealing the Impact of Oxygen Dissolved in Electrolytes on Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising low-cost and high-safety energy storage devices. However, their capacity decay especially at the initial cyclic stage is a serious issue. Herein, we reveal that the dissolved oxygen in aqueous electrolyte has significant impact on the electrochemistry of Zn anode and ZIBs. After removing oxygen, the symmetrical set-up of Zn/Zn is capable of reversible plating/stripping with a 20-fold lifetime enhancement compared with that in oxygen enrichment condition. Taking aqueous Zn-MnO2 battery as an example, although the presence of oxygen can contribute

Effect of coating electrolytes on two-tailed surfactant bilayer coatings in capillary electrophoresis.

Surfactants such as dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) form semi-permanent coatings that effectively prevent adsorption of cationic proteins onto the fused silica capillary in capillary electrophoresis (CE). The bilayer coating is generated by flushing the capillary with a 0.1 mM surfactant solution. However, formation of the bilayer is strongly dependent on the coating electrolyte. The effect of counter-ions, electrolyte concentrations and buffer co-ions were monitored based on: the separation of basic model proteins; the adsorption kinetics of DODA(+) onto fused silica; and dynamic

Serum electrolytes and capillary blood gases in the management of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis.

The purpose of this study was to assess whether the concentration of serum chloride and other variables, namely serum sodium, potassium and bicarbonate, can be used to predict metabolic acid-base status in infants with hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS) and to assess whether such a prediction is influenced by the state of hydration. One hundred and sixty-three infants with HPS who had at least one set of serum electrolyte and capillary blood gas estimations performed after admission were studied retrospectively. A further 25 infants who had their electrolyte and blood gases measured after at

[Relationship between corticosteroids, catecholamines and electrolytes in rats kept on sodium-rich diet].

The changes in the content of catecholamines, electrolytes and corticosteroids were studied dynamically and simultaneously in rats under salt stimulation. Long-term maintenance of the animals on sodium-rich diets results in its accumulation in blood plasma and heart muscle, the tissue depot of catecholamines diminishing at the same time. The changes in the functional state of the adrenal glands and of the catecholamines content in the myocardium are of a phased nature. The activation of the glucocorticoid function of the adrenal glands on the 18th day of the experiment is substituted by its re…
