Effects of modafinil and amphetamine on sleep-wake cycle after sleep deprivation in cats.

AIM: The effects of modafinil and amphetamine on sleep-wake cycle and cortical power spectrum were assessed in the cats before and after sleep deprivation. METHODS: The sleep deprivation in the cats was used with the water tank technique. Cats were administrated with modafinil (5 mg.kg-1 p.o.) or amphetamine (1 mg.kg-1) before and after sleep deprivation. RESULTS: The waking effect of 8-10 h induced by modafinil before and after sleep deprivation was similar and was not followed by an increase in sleep rebound. On the contrary, the arousal effect about 8 h evoked by amphetamine after sleep d

Pathogenesis of cortical myoclonus studied by magnetoencephalography.

Myoclonus-associated cortical activities were studied by simultaneous recording of a magnetoencephalogram and an electroencephalogram in 6 patients with cortical myoclonus due to various causes. Cortical activities were averaged, with respect to the precise onset of the myoclonic jerk, to evaluate the myoclonus-associated cortical magnetic fields. The estimated generator of their earliest peak was localized at the contralateral precentral gyrus in all patients. As judged from the direction of the electrical current, surface positive activity preceding the electromyographic discharge was detect

Promoting alertness with a short nap during a night shift.

The use of a short (< 1 h) nap in improving alertness during the early morning hours in the first night shift was examined under laboratory conditions. The study contained four experimental, non-consecutive night shifts with a nap of either 50 or 30 min at 01.00 or 04.00 hours. An experimental night shift without a nap served as a control condition. Each experimental shift was followed by daytime sleep. Fourteen experienced male shift workers went through all of the experimental conditions. The results showed that the naps improved the ability to respond to visual signals during the second hal

Reorganization of the somatosensory cortex after amputation of the index finger.

Cortical reorganization occurs within the primary somatosensory and the primary motor cortex after amputation of the arm or forearm. Here we report on a patient showing cortical reorganization after amputation of his right index finger. Our findings indicate that the neural networks within the area of the amputated finger in the somatosensory cortex (SI) were invaded by neighbouring structures, i.e. of neural cell assemblies that subserve the thumb and middle finger of his right hand.

Comparison of the human electro-oculographic response to green and near-ultraviolet stimuli.

We recorded the electro-oculogram from 27 normal subjects by means of green and near-ultraviolet (UVA) stimulation. After a 40-minute dark-adaptation period, baseline responses were recorded. In response to the green stimulus, the electro-oculogram increased from this level by an average (+/- standard error of the mean) of 49.5% +/- 4.0%. Although the predicted scotopic effectiveness of the ultraviolet stimulus was more than 3 log units below that of the green stimulus, the near-ultraviolet-induced electro-oculogram increased to an average of 21.9% +/- 3.0% above baseline. This response cannot

Ocular motility anomalies in developmental misdirection of the optic chiasm.

A 35-year-old normally pigmented man underwent monocular hemifield visual-evoked potential examinations that indicated a lack of normal decussation of nasal paramacular retinogeniculate fibers in the optic chiasm. We studied effects of this anomaly on ocular motility using electro-oculography and the magnetic search-coil technique. The patient exhibited horizontal congenital nystagmus with a predominantly positive exponential waveform. Horizontal smooth pursuit and optokinetic nystagmus were consistently reversed, independent of eye position in the orbit. Vertical tracking was uniformly normal

Internuclear ophthalmoplegia of abduction: clinical and electrophysiological data on the existence of an abduction paresis of prenuclear origin.

Three patients showed unilateral and five bilateral abduction paresis. Five had associated adduction nystagmus of the contralateral eye. Electrophysiological testing of masseter and blink reflexes indicated an ipsilateral rostral pontine or mesencephalic lesion, and excluded a lesion of the infranuclear portion of the abducens nerve. Abduction paresis was attributed to impaired inhibition of the tonic resting activity of the antagonistic medial rectus muscle. The prenuclear origin of the disorder is based on morphological and neurophysiological evidence of an ipsilateral inhibitory connection

Human DC scalp potentials during vestibular and optokinetic stimulation: non-specific responses?

In normal subjects transient horizontal body rotation in the dark (vestibular stimulation) elicited a DC potential change with the maximum at Cz. The response appeared to covary with stimulus velocity, which is the most relevant stimulus parameter transferred by the horizontal semicircular canal system. A similar response was obtained during optokinetic stimulation. However, the following findings suggested that the responses are related to 'high' perceptual functions rather than representing a visuo-vestibular evoked cortical potential: (a) the visual response was found independent of whether

Clinical and electrophysiological observations in patients with low pressure retinopathy.

The clinical, angiographic, and electrophysiological features of seven patients with transient visual loss and low-pressure retinopathy are presented. Six of the patients also had symptoms of cerebral ischaemia. The commonest provoking feature was bright light. Angiography showed multiple extracranial occlusions involving both internal and external carotid arteries in addition to occlusion or stenosis on the contralateral side. Electroretinography showed delay in the recovery of the b wave in the affected eye after exposure to bright light. This appears to be a valuable test for the detection

Disease-specific electrophysiological findings in adult ceroid-lipofuscinosis (Kufs disease).

Two adults with mild dementia and a history of memory loss and disequilibrium were seen in the eye clinic following complaints of acuity loss in the 20/30-20/70 (Snellen) range. Results from the fundus examination of one patient were entirely normal; the other showed minimal vascular attenuation and optic atrophy. Electrophysiology was remarkable: (1) Photopic ERG b-waves were reduced, delayed, and showed pronounced oscillations. (2) EOG 'light-rise' potentials were absent or very small. (3) Binocular pattern-VER signals showed addition of the monocular signal. Scotopic ERG signals were normal

[Degenerative ocular retinal albinism in a girl ten years old (author's transl)].

Ocular albinism with myopia and impaired vision (R.E. 0.2; L.E. 0.6), but without nystagmus, were observed in a 10-year-old girl. The electrophysiological tests indicate, in addition, the presence of a tapetoretinal degeneration. It is assumed that the patient is carrier of two genes, a sex-linked one responsible for albinismus solum fundi and a second one of autosomal-recessive type, responsible for the tapetoretinal degenerartion.

Rapid eye movements in myasthenia gravis. II. Electro-oculographic analysis.

Voluntary saccades were studied by electro-oculography in ten patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) and in eight patients with other types of ophthalmoplegia. Despite limited range of eye movements, maximum velocities of 20 degree and 40 degree saccades in patients with MG were not significantly different from those in normal individuals, whereas maximum velocities in patients with other types of ophthalmoplegia were significantly decreased. In some myasthenic patients, small amplitude saccades were hypermetric and had high velocities, appearing clinically as "quiver" movements characteristic o
