Nicotinamide-dependent one-electron and two-electron (flavin) oxidoreduction: thermodynamics, kinetics, and mechanism.

1. Biological nicotinamide-dependent oxidoreduction consists of reversible 2e- oxidoreduction of substrates. A mechanism involving subsequent 1e- steps is shown to be very unfavourable due to the high energy of the nicotinamide radical. 2. Free energy relationships provide a convenient tool, allowing one to differentiate between hydride transfer and hydrogen atom transfer. It is concluded that biological nicotinamide-dependent, as well as flavin-nicotinamide oxidoreduction, proceed via hydride transfer but not via hydrogen atom transfer. 3. In flavin-nicotinamide oxidoreduction, flavin-nicotin

Studies of phosphorescent probes for proteins.

1. Certain capabilities and limitations of using bound phosphorescent chromophores to study protein structure were investigated. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors with three different arrangements of singlet and triplet energy levels relative to those of tryptophan were used to determine their ability to transfer triplet energy. 2. Ligands representing each of the three spectroscopic energy level arrangements were found to exhibit triplet-triplet energy transfer with a tryptophan residue at the active site of carbonic anhydrase. This greatly increases the number of ligands which may be useful as p

Tailoring Photophysical Processes of Perylene-Based Light Harvesting Antenna Systems with Molecular Structure and Solvent Polarity.

The excited-state dynamics of perylene-based bichromophoric light harvesting antenna systems has been tailored by systematic modification of the molecular structure and by using solvents of increasing polarity in the series toluene, chloroform, and benzonitrile. The antenna systems consist of blue light absorbing naphthalene monoimide (NMI) energy donors (D1, D2, and D3) and the perylene derived green light absorbing energy acceptor moieties, 1,7-perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic tetrabutylester (A1), 1,7-perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic monoimide dibutylester (A2), and 1,7-perylene-3,4,9,10-

Towards a functional model of mental disorders incorporating the laws of thermodynamics.

The current paper presents the hypothesis that the understanding of mental disorders can be advanced by incorporating the laws of thermodynamics, specifically relating to energy conservation and energy transfer. These ideas, along with the introduction of the notion that entropic activities are symptomatic of inefficient energy transfer or disorder, were used to propose a model of understanding mental ill health as resulting from the interaction of entropy, capacity and work (environmental demands). The model was applied to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and was shown to be compatib

Long-lived, charge-shift states in heterometallic, porphyrin-based dendrimers formed via click chemistry.

A series of multiporphyrin clusters has been synthesized and characterized in which there exists a logical gradient for either energy or electron transfer between the porphyrins. A central free-base porphyrin (FbP), for example, is equipped with peripheral zinc(II) porphyrins (ZnP) which act as ancillary light harvesters and transfer excitation energy to the FbP under visible light illumination. Additional energy-transfer steps occur at the triplet level, and the series is expanded by including magnesium(II) porphyrins and/or tin(IV) porphyrins as chromophores. Light-induced electron transfer

New understanding of the role of cerebrospinal fluid: offsetting of arterial and brain pulsation and self-dissipation of cerebrospinal fluid pulsatile flow energy.

Many theories have been postulated to date regarding the mechanisms involved in the absorption of the intracranial arterial blood flow energy in the intracranial space, but it is as yet nor clearly defined. The blood flow energy that is transmitted from the heart formulates the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pulsatile flow, and is known to constitute the major energy of the CSF flow, while the bulk flow carries only small energy. The intracranial space that is enclosed in a solid cranium and is an isolate system as in the Monroe-Kellie doctrine, and the authors propose to re-analyze the Monroe-Kell

A Theoretical Study of Radical Formation Mechanisms in PET-RAFT Polymerization Using Porphyrins as Photoredox Catalysts.

Mechanisms of photoinduced electron/energy transfer reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerizations using zinc tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP) or tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) as photoredox catalysts (PCs) were studied using density functional theory calculations. To explain the selectivity of ZnTPP for trithiocarbonate compounds, the radical generation mechanisms of two chain transfer agents (CTAs), a trithiocarbonate (BTPA) and a dithiobenzoate (CPADB), were compared. The results suggest that the reaction mechanism (i.e., electron or energy transfer) depends on both the

Gel-confined strain amplifies FRET efficiency toward red emission enhancement beyond pressure quenching.

Manganese (Mn)-based metal halides, with their rich and well-defined emission mechanisms, have garnered substantial attention in luminescent materials. However, their red emission quantum yields generally lag behind green emission, making precise energy modulation an attractive yet challenging goal. Here, we engineer a pressure-triggered Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) network within a Mn-based metal halide gel (Mn-MHG). This achieved anomalous red emission enhancement via external energy injection, with red emission intensity at 355% of ambient green emission intensity. During compre

Intermolecular Charge Transfer Induced Sensitization of Yb3+ in β-Diketone Coordination Compounds with Excellent Luminescence Efficiency.

Achieving high quantum yields for Yb3+ ion emission in complexes with organic ligands is a challenging task, as most Yb3+ complexes with such ligands typically exhibit efficiencies below 3.5%. Our research demonstrates that the introduction of heavy atom-containing ancillary ligands, such as TPPO or TPAO, along with the careful engineering of the main β-diketone ligand, can increase the luminescence efficiency up to 20-fold by the alteration of the energy migration pathway. It is demonstrated that the combination of two distinct organic ligands leads to the blockage of singlet-triplet intersys

Toxoplasma bradyzoites exhibit physiological plasticity of calcium and energy stores controlling motility and egress.

Toxoplasma gondii has evolved different developmental stages for disseminating during acute infection (i.e., tachyzoites) and establishing chronic infection (i.e., bradyzoites). Calcium ion (Ca2+) signaling tightly regulates the lytic cycle of tachyzoites by controlling microneme secretion and motility to drive egress and cell invasion. However, the roles of Ca2+ signaling pathways in bradyzoites remain largely unexplored. Here, we show that Ca2+ responses are highly restricted in bradyzoites and that they fail to egress in response to agonists. Development of dual-reporter parasites revealed

Electronic energy self-exchange with macrocyclic chromium(III) complexes.

The luminescence lifetimes of N-deuterated Cr(III) complexes of macrocyclic tetraamine ligands, trans-CrN(4)X(2)(n)()(+), are substantially longer than those of their undeuterated counterparts in room temperature solution. Thus, excited-state emission quenching of the longer lived species by the shorter lived species may be studied by analyzing the decay profile following pulsed excitation. Flash photolysis experiments were carried out for three deuterated/undeuterated pairs of trans-CrN(4)X(2)(n)()(+) complexes (where X = CN-, NH(3), and F-). For the trans-Cr(cyclam)(CN)(2)(+) system in H(2)O

Solvent-dependent Sensitization and Photophysical Behavior of IrIII-EuIII Bimetallic Complexes.

The photophysical properties of a heterobimetallic IrIII-EuIII complex were investigated in solvents with different polarity, coordinating ability, and vibrational characteristics to elucidate the factors governing EuIII sensitization. Steady-state and time-resolved luminescence measurements revealed that the solvent profoundly influences both the donor-to-acceptor energy-transfer process and the europium-centered emission. The apparent IrIII → EuIII energy-transfer rate constants (kET) and donor-to-acceptor energy-transfer efficiencies (ηET) were estimated from the residual 3MLCT emission lif

Synthesis of polymethylene-linked bis(cyclobutane-fused chromanones) mediated by gold photocatalysis.

We report a gold-mediated energy transfer strategy for the sequential double [2 + 2] photocycloaddition of coumarins with dienes, providing access to polymethylene-linked bis(cyclobutane-fused chromanones). The reaction proceeds under mild conditions and affords structurally complex products in moderate to good yields. Optimization studies, control experiments, triplet-energy analysis, and DFT calculations support a triplet energy transfer pathway involving diradical intermediates.

Energies of different assault tools in blunt force trauma.

Due to the inherent ubiquity of objects capable of inflicting blunt force trauma, such injuries are a frequent occurrence in forensic investigations of violent crimes. While the injury patterns and medical consequences resulting from blunt force trauma have already been extensively researched, the forces or energies that act during impact are still largely unexplored. This study aims to determine the impact energies and moments of inertia (MOI) of various everyday items recently used as assault weapons. Five different tools but with similar MOI's were examined, namely a crutch, a vacuum cleane

Enhanced Single-Particle Upconversion Imaging via Energy Migration Boosting.

Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are promising bioimaging probes due to their exceptional photostability and minimal background interference. However, their limited single-particle brightness has hindered broader applications. The study addresses this challenge by enhancing energy migration (EM) between sensitizer Yb3+ to improve energy transfer efficiency to emitter Er3+. Nanoparticles are designed with a sensitizer/emitter-segregated core-shell-shell architecture (NaLu0.9Er0.1F4@NaYbF4@NaLuF4) to inhibit back energy transfer (BET) and then increased Yb3+ doping levels (NaL

Dose concept of oncological hyperthermia: heat-equation considering the cell destruction.

We shall assume, of course, that the objective of hyperthermia is to destroy the malignant cells. Destruction definitely needs energy. Description and quality assurance of hyperthermia use the Pennes heat equation to describe the processes. However the energy balance of the Pennes-equation does not contain the hyperthermic cell-destruction energy, which is a mandatory factor of the process. We propose a generalization of the Pennes-equation, inducing the entire energy balance. The new paradigm could be a theoretical basis of the till now empirical dose-construction for oncological hyperthermia

Measurement of the restricted dose mean LET outside the primary beam of a 60Co radiotherapy unit.

A recently developed method for the direct measurement of the restricted dose mean LET (cutoff energy = 500 eV) of an unspecified photon or electron radiation field with the high-pressure ionization chamber has been utilized to investigate the variation of this radiobiologically important parameter outside the primary beam of a clinical 60Co unit. A small high-pressure tissue-equivalent ionization chamber was used, and its characteristics and experimental considerations for the present investigation are reported. Measurement of the restricted dose mean LET at the examined points outside the pr

Capturing ultrafast energy flow of a heme protein in crowded milieu.

Energy flow in biomolecules is a dynamic process vital for understanding health, disease, and applications in biotechnology and medicine. In crowded environments, where biomolecular functions are modulated, comprehending energy flow becomes crucial for accurately understanding cellular processes like signaling and subsequent functions. This study employs ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy to demonstrate energy funneling from the photoexcited heme of bovine heart cytochrome c to the protein exterior, in the presence of common synthetic (Dextran 40, Ficoll 70, PEG 8 and Dextran 70) and
