BACKGROUND: Electrostatic precipitation pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (ePIPAC) is a novel approach for intraperitoneal drug delivery. As ePIPAC using cisplatin and doxorubicin is performed in an operating room, the challenge is to safely deliver the chemotherapeutic aerosol intraperitoneally while preventing exposure to healthcare workers. The objective of this study was to describe cisplatin and doxorubicin workplace environmental contamination and healthcare worker exposure during ePIPAC.
METHODS: Antineoplastic drugs concentrations of cisplatin and doxorubicin were measu

Food processing environments are prone to microbial contamination, where biofilm formation by persistent bacteria reduces hygiene and food safety. In this study, 27 biofilm-forming bacterial strains were isolated from processing equipment surfaces, with the dominant strains identified as B. cereus LE3, B. cereus YJBR3, and P. cibi F25. An environmental isolate, B. licheniformis YJE5, exhibited no hemolytic activity and demonstrated strong enzymatic potential. Intracellular substances (ICS) extracted from B. licheniformis YJE5, isolated from a food processing environment, significantly inhibite

PURPOSE: The production and administration of drugs used intrathecally requires special care to prevent contamination with neurotoxic agents. In 2007, we investigated a widespread outbreak of paraplegia and paraparesis among Chinese patients who received intrathecal drugs to identify the presumed contaminant and its source to prevent further cases.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We defined a case as onset from January 1 to October 31, 2007, of bilateral flaccid paraparesis or paraplegia or retention and incontinence of stool or urine, in a patient receiving intrathecal drugs. Using a retrospective coh

Health care workers are often victims of occupational injuries by contaminated sharps or projection of contaminated fluids to mucous membranes and are therefore at risk for transmission of HIV, HBV and HCV. Every technical and organisation-related measure useful to prevent injuries should be implemented and personal protection equipment must be made available to workers. Promotion of hepatitis B immunization is a key issue. Immediate evaluation of injured employee is necessary to assess the risk related to exposure and the indication for post-exposure prophylaxis (anti-retroviral therapy for H

UNLABELLED: This report deals with the construction and management of the reverse osmosis (RO) water system for final rinsing of surgical instruments in the washer-disinfector. Numerous operational challenges were encountered in our RO water system and these were analyzed utilizing the Ishikawa Fishbone diagram. The aim was to find potential problems and promote preventive system management for RO water. It was found that the measures that existed were inappropriate for preventing contamination in the heat-labile RO water system. The storage tank was found to be significantly contaminated and

Air and surface contamination of the SARS-CoV-2 have been reported by multiple studies. However, the evidence is limited for the change of environmental contamination of this virus in the surrounding of patients with COVID-19 at different time points during the course of disease and under different conditions of the patients. Therefore, this study aims to understand the risk factors associated with the appearance of SARS-CoV-2 through the period when the patients were staying in the isolation wards. In this study, COVID-19 patients admitted to the isolation wards were followed up for up to 10

BACKGROUND: An outbreak of monkeypox virus infections in non-endemic countries was recognised on May 12, 2022. As of September 29, more than 67 000 infections have been reported globally, with more than 3400 confirmed cases in the UK by September 26. Monkeypox virus is believed to be predominantly transmitted through direct contact with lesions or infected body fluids, with possible involvement of fomites and large respiratory droplets. A case of monkeypox in a health-care worker in the UK in 2018 was suspected to be due to virus exposure while changing bedding. We aimed to measure the extent

BACKGROUND: Cerebral deposition of abnormally misfolded and aggregated alpha-synuclein (αSyn) is a neuropathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD). Pathologically aggregated αSyn species of PD (αSynPD) can act, in a 'prion-like' manner, as proteinaceous nuclei ('seeds') which are capable of self-templated propagation. This has raised concerns that αSynPD seeds transmitted iatrogenically between humans may stimulate αSyn pathologies or clinically harmful effects in the recipients. Effective decontamination when reprocessing medical devices could significantly counteract such risks. Steam

Currently, cystic fibrosis patients require daily nebulized treatments to achieve optimal lung health. Growth of pathogenic bacteria in patient nebulizers is well known, and disinfection guidelines have been established. In this short communication, we sought to discover what effect, if any, repeated nebulization/disinfection cycles had on nebulizer output. We nebulized saline repeatedly after exposure to boiling water, steam, and alcohol disinfection methods. While alcohol disinfection did not affect nebulizer output, boiling water and steam significantly decreased nebulizer output from basel

Irritant contact dermatitis of the hands is a significant occupational problem. Management primarily involves cessation of exposure to hazardous substances. Protective gloves can reduce or eliminate exposure of the hands to hazardous substances if used correctly, but if not selected and used correctly, protective gloves can actually cause or worsen irritant contact dermatitis of the hands by increasing exposure of the hands to hazardous chemicals. We present two cases of occupational irritant contact dermatitis of the hands caused by incorrect use of protective gloves. Glove failure can occur

The best practice for cleansing urinary drainage bags (leg and bed) in a hospital setting can be translated for use by clients for self-care within the home setting. Common household bleach containing 5.25% sodium hypochlorite, diluted in a 1:10 ratio with tap water, is a safe and effective method to reduce colony-forming units per milliliter (CFU/ml) to a study-defined acceptable range of 100 CFU/ml when a standard procedure was consistently used. This practice increases the life of the urinary drainage bag, decreasing the cost for the client. Ascending bacteria from the urinary drainage bag
