The cost of headache disorders in Europe: the Eurolight project.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Headache disorders are very common, but their monetary costs in Europe are unknown. We performed the first comprehensive estimation of how economic resources are lost to headache in Europe. METHODS: From November 2008 to August 2009, a cross-sectional survey was conducted in eight countries representing 55% of the adult EU population. Participation rates varied between 11% and 59%. In total, 8412 questionnaires contributed to this analysis. Using bottom-up methodology, we estimated direct (medications, outpatient health care, hospitalization and investigations) and ind…

On-road emissions of light-duty vehicles in europe.

For obtaining type approval in the European Union, light-duty vehicles have to comply with emission limits during standardized laboratory emissions testing. Although emission limits have become more stringent in past decades, light-duty vehicles remain an important source of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide emissions in Europe. Furthermore, persisting air quality problems in many urban areas suggest that laboratory emissions testing may not accurately capture the on-road emissions of light-duty vehicles. To address this issue, we conduct the first comprehensive on-road emissions test of lig…

Toward rubella elimination in Europe: an epidemiological assessment.

BACKGROUND: The elimination of rubella and prevention of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) by 2015 are established goals for Europe. Our aim was to review the epidemiology of rubella in relation to this goal. MATERIAL AND METHODS: National surveillance institutions from 32 European countries provided information on rubella and CRS surveillance systems and data for 2000-08. We reported the number of notified rubella cases by year for countries with a national mandatory notification system for rubella covering total country population consistently throughout 2000-08 and analysed rubella surveil…

[Epidemiology of acute coronary syndromes in France and in Europe].

In France, the incidence of myocardial infarctions leading to hospitalisations can be estimated between 60,000 and 65,000 each year. With the addition of cases of unstable angina, about 80,000 to 100,000 hospital stays each year are caused by acute coronary syndromes. Cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest of ischaemic origin should also be taken into account when estimating the annual incidence of myocardial infarction. In Europe, a North-South gradient, and even more an East-West gradient is observed for the incidence of ischaemic heart disease, with the highest figures found in central and…

History of dementia research in Bohemia and middle Europe.

UNLABELLED: The clinical aspects and histopathology of dementia are best understood when based on knowledge of the historical milestones associated with its development. We studied archive materials and visited some of the psychiatric asylums that were active in Prague during the 19th century. RESULTS: The gradual recognition of dementia and its histological correlates on the territory of the actual Czech Republic from the 1830s are described, together with its links to Austrian, German, and other foreign psychiatry and neurology. A stepwise differentiation between inborn mental incapacity an

Implications of the Impact Survey for payors across Europe.

People involved with development of health care policy must be appreciative of the social and economic challenges that will likely develop as a result of the rise in Alzheimer's disease (AD) as the 21st century progresses. Their attitudes, perceptions and understanding regarding AD were captured in the IMPACT survey, a 30-minute Web-based questionnaire. Fifty health policy managers and decision-makers (payors) were recruited, 10 each from 5 European countries--France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. Most payors felt that AD was underdiagnosed and undertreated in their country (80…

Process performance of cervical screening programmes in Europe.

Standardised tables of aggregated data were collected from 15 European national or regional cervical screening programmes and key performance indicators computed as reported in European Union (EU) Guidelines, 2nd edition. Cytological results varied widely between countries both for the total proportion of abnormal tests (from 1.2% in Germany (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) to 11.7% in Ireland-Midwest Region) and for their distribution by grade. Referral rates for repeat cytology (ranging from 2.9% of screened women in the Netherlands to 16.6% in Slovenia) or for colposcopy (ranging from 0.8% in Finla…

[Accidents with venomous and poisonous animals in Central Europe].

Central Europe is largely safe from accidents with venomous and poisonous animals. The regions where European vipers are regularly found are shrinking. Today accidents with jellyfish and stings of venomous fish afflicted during leisure activities at the sea side play the dominant role. Life threatening accidents in Europe are mainly due to exotic snakes held in captivity. A system useful in daily medical practice is explained to classify and stage accidents due to poisonous and venomous animals. The important poisonous and venomous animals of Central Europe and the specific therapeutics, the a…

Varicella vaccination in Europe - taking the practical approach.

Varicella is a common viral disease affecting almost the entire birth cohort. Although usually self-limiting, some cases of varicella can be serious, with 2 to 6% of cases attending a general practice resulting in complications. The hospitalisation rate for varicella in Europe ranges from 1.3 to 4.5 per 100,000 population/year and up to 10.1% of hospitalised patients report permanent or possible permanent sequelae (for example, scarring or ataxia). However, in many countries the epidemiology of varicella remains largely unknown or incomplete. In countries where routine childhood vaccination ag…

What is the future of wildlife rabies control in Europe?

Over the last fifteen years or so, classical rabies in terrestrial wildlife has been eliminated from large areas of Western Europe. Over the next few years, terrestrial rabies is likely to occur only east of a line from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea; the overall aim is to eliminate terrestrial rabies from the whole European Union. Elimination of rabies from the less rich countries of Eastern Europe, and the protection of Europe against a resurgence of rabies in the longer term requires modifications to existing OIE and WHO strategies. Here we discuss the options available to eliminate rabies…

Impact of headache in Europe: a review for the Eurolight project.

A recent health economic survey in Europe has suggested that migraine is the costliest among the neurological disorders. According to many studies, migraine and other disorders lead to widespread suffering, reduction of quality of life, and marked impairment of participation, both in work and social activities. The present literature survey was made in order to summarize what is known on the subject, as a preparation for a EU-supported study to assess the impact in several EU countries with similar methodology and the same research instrument. Previous studies have yielded relatively reliable …

Increasing prevalence of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae in Europe.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the significance of achieving deep remission by induction therapy in lupus nephritis (LN) patients. METHODS: We assessed consecutive patients undergoing induction therapy for active LN. Achievement of complete renal response (CR) was defined as a urine protein creatinine ratio (UPCR) ≤0.5 g/gCr, and deep remission (DR) was defined as a UPCR ≤0.15 g/gCr with stabilisation of serum creatinine levels assessed every 2-3 months. We compared renal flare and damage accrual rates among patients with CR, CR without DR, and DR at 3, 6, and 12 months and later. RESULTS: Fifty-ni

Epidemiology of severe Streptococcus pyogenes disease in Europe.

The past 2 decades have brought worrying increases in severe Streptococcus pyogenes diseases globally. To investigate and compare the epidemiological patterns of these diseases within Europe, data were collected through a European Union FP-5-funded program (Strep-EURO). Prospective population-based surveillance of severe S. pyogenes infection diagnosed during 2003 and 2004 was undertaken in 11 countries across Europe (Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Romania, Sweden, and the United Kingdom) using a standardized case definition. A total of 5,522 case…

Public health law and tuberculosis control in Europe.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis control is an important public health challenge in many European countries. Law is an important tool that policy-makers can draw upon to support control efforts and, according to the World Health Organization, represents a tangible expression of political commitment and will. Despite this, little national research, and even less cross-national comparative research, has been conducted to describe and analyse legislative approaches to tuberculosis control. METHODS: We conducted a survey of 14 European countries to identify, describe, map and analyse legislative tools us…
