Contextual valence modulates the neural dynamics of risk processing.

A well-known bias in risky decision making is that most people tend to be risk averse when gains are salient but risk seeking when losses are salient. The present study addressed the neural dynamics of this process by recording ERPs during a gambling task in a gain and a loss context. Behaviorally, participants were found to be risk averse in the gain context but risk neutral in the loss context. During the anticipation stage, an increased stimulus-preceding negativity was elicited by high- versus low-risk choices in the gain but not the loss context. During the outcome-appraisal stage, the fe

Can the error detection mechanism benefit from training the working memory? A comparison between dyslexics and controls--an ERP study.

BACKGROUND: Based on the relationship between working memory and error detection, we investigated the capacity of adult dyslexic readers' working memory to change as a result of training, and the impact of training on the error detection mechanism. METHODOLOGY: 27 dyslexics and 34 controls, all university students, participated in the study. ERP methodology and behavioral measures were employed prior to, immediately after, and 6 months after training. The CogniFit Personal Coach Program, which consists of 24 sessions of direct training of working memory skills, was used. FINDINGS: Both group

Multilead quantitative electroencephalogram profile and cognitive evoked potentials (P300) in healthy subjects after a single dose of olanzapine.

RATIONALE: Olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic drug with a more favourable safety profile than typical antipsychotics with a hitherto unknown topographic quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) profile. OBJECTIVES: We investigated electrical brain activity (QEEG and cognitive event related potentials, ERPs) in healthy subjects who received olanzapine. METHODS: Vigilance-controlled, 19-channel EEG and ERP in an auditory odd-ball paradigm were recorded before and 3 h, 6 h and 9 h after administration of either a single dose of placebo or olanzapine (2.5 mg and 5 mg) in ten healthy subject

Adverse central nervous system effects of older antihistamines in children.

Although older, potentially sedating, "first-generation" antihistamines (H1-receptor antagonists) are commonly used in childhood, their central nervous system (CNS) effects have not been well-documented in young subjects. We hypothesized that diphenhydramine and hydroxyzine would affect CNS function adversely in this population. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of these medications on central and peripheral histamine H1-receptors in children. Fifteen subjects with allergic rhinitis were tested before and 2-2.5 h after administration of diphenhydramine, hydroxyzine, or placebo in a dou

Effects of intravenous L-dopa on P300 and regional cerebral blood flow in parkinsonism.

The P300 and regional cerebral blood flow were measured before and after intravenous injection of L-dopa in 10 patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease and 10 patients with vascular parkinsonism. The P300 was measured with an evoked potential recorder using an oddball paradigm and the regional cerebral blood flow was measured using the stable xenon computed tomography method. The P300 latency was significantly longer and the regional cerebral blood flow in the cerebral cortex and basal ganglia was significantly lower in the Parkinson's disease group and the vascular parkinsonism group than

Reduced NoGo-anteriorisation during continuous performance test in deletion syndrome 22q11.2.

Deletion syndrome 22q11.2 (DS22q11.2) is a high-risk factor for psychiatric disorders. Alterations in brain morphology and function including the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) are suggested to underlie the increased psychiatric disposition. We assessed response-inhibition in patients with DS22q11.2 (n=13) and healthy controls (n=13) matched for age, sex, and handedness by means of a Go-NoGo-Task during recording of a multi-channel electroencephalography (EEG). Analysis of event-related potentials (P300) resulted in an aberrant topographical pattern and NoGo-anteriorisation (NGA) as a paramet

Electrophysiological and Psychological Correlates of Cognition in Adult Homozygous Sickle Cell Disease Patients.

BACKGROUND: Neurocognitive dysfunction is the most common neurological complication seen in homozygous sickle cell disease (SCD) patients, and it appears to be associated with the severity of anaemia, indicating hypoxic brain injury as a causative factor, but the studies are limited to the paediatric population. PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate the neurocognitive profile in adult homozygous SCD patients by subjective (Montreal Cognitive Assessment [MoCA] questionnaire) as well as objective (P300 event-related potentials [ERPs]) cognitive tests. METHOD: Thirty adult homozygous SCD patients an

Comparing the 'When' and the 'Where' of Electrocortical Activity in Patients with Tourette Syndrome, Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Background/Objectives: Tourette Syndrome (TS), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRB) are three disorders that share many similarities in terms of phenomenology, neuroanatomy, and functionality. However, despite the literature pointing toward a plausible spectrum of these disorders, only a few studies have compared them. Studying the neurocognitive processes using Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) offers the advantage of assessing brain activity with excellent temporal resolution. The ERP components can then reflect specific processes known to be potent

A systematic review of electrophysiological markers of reward processing in addiction.

Prevalence of addictive behaviors is commonly associated with alterations in the brain's reward circuitry, leading to the upholding of a maladaptive pattern of reward-seeking behavior despite aversive consequences. The main objective of this systematic review was to provide a broad overview of the literature on electrophysiological correlates of anticipation and reward processing in addiction, including substance use disorders (SUD), as well as behavioral addictions. Reward processing in addiction has been investigated using electroencephalography (EEG) studies employing a cue-reward experimen

Vanadium exposure-induced neurobehavioral alterations among Chinese workers.

Vanadium-containing products are manufactured and widely used in the modern industry. Yet the neurobehavioral toxicity due to occupational exposure to vanadium remained elusive. This cross-sectional study was designed to examine the neurotoxic effects of occupational vanadium exposure. A total of 463 vanadium-exposed workers (exposed group) and 251 non-exposed workers (control group) were recruited from a Steel and Iron Group in Sichuan, China. A WHO-recommended neurobehavioral core test battery (NCTB) and event-related auditory evoked potentials test (P300) were used to assess the neurobehavi

Event-related potential markers of subjective cognitive decline and mild cognitive impairment during a sustained visuo-attentive task.

Subjective cognitive decline (SCD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and Alzheimer's disease stages lack well-defined electrophysiological correlates, creating a critical gap in the identification of robust biomarkers for early diagnosis and intervention. In this study, we analysed event-related potentials (ERPs) recorded during a sustained visual attention task in a cohort of 178 individuals (119 SCD, 40 MCI, and 19 healthy subjects, HS) to investigate sensory and cognitive processing alterations associated with these conditions. SCD patients exhibited significant attenuation in both sensory

Attentional Blink to emotional and threatening pictures in spider phobics: electrophysiology and behavior.

When two targets have to be identified in a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) paradigm, perception of the second target (T2) becomes significantly impaired if it is displayed 200-500 ms after the first target (T1), a phenomenon labeled as "Attentional Blink" (AB). Here we investigate 14 spider phobics and 16 controls in an RSVP paradigm with neutral T1s. T2 pictures were neutral, emotional (positive or negative) or threatening (spiders for spider phobics). In addition, event-related potentials in response to T2 targets were analyzed. Both spider phobics and controls correctly identified

Stimulus modality influences session-to-session transfer of training effects in auditory and tactile streaming-based P300 brain-computer interfaces.

Despite recent successes, patients suffering from locked-in syndrome (LIS) still struggle to communicate using vision-independent brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). In this study, we compared auditory and tactile BCIs, regarding training effects and cross-stimulus-modality transfer effects, when switching between stimulus modalities. We utilized a streaming-based P300 BCI, which was developed as a low workload approach to prevent potential BCI-inefficiency. We randomly assigned 20 healthy participants to two groups. The participants received three sessions of training either using an auditory B

N300 indexes deficient integration of orthographic and phonological representations in children with dyslexia.

In transparent orthographies, like German, children with developmental dyslexia (DD) are mainly characterized by a reading fluency deficit. The reading fluency deficit might be traced back to a scarce integration of orthographic and phonological representations. In order to address this question, the present study used EEG to investigate the N300, an ERP component which has been associated with the integration of orthographic and phonological representations. Twenty children without DD and 18 children with DD performed a phonological (P)-orthographic (O) matching task (P-O condition), which ta

Inhibition-related differences between tic-free and tic-related obsessive-compulsive disorder: evidence from the N2 and P3.

Tic-related OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) was introduced as an OCD subtype in the DSM-5 based mainly on family and clinical data that showed differences between OCD in dependence of accompanying tics. Little is known, however, regarding neurocognitive differences between subtypes. We used the stop-signal task to examine whether differences exist in response inhibition between OCD patients without tics (n = 21), patients with tic-related OCD (n = 12), and 21 healthy controls. The groups were carefully matched for gender, age and level of education. The stop-signal reaction time (SSRT) and

Processing of affective words in adolescent PTSD-Attentional bias toward social threat.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with a hypersensitivity to potential threat. This hypersensitivity manifests through differential patterns of emotional information processing and has been demonstrated in behavioral and neurophysiological experimental paradigms. However, the majority of research has been focused on adult patients with PTSD. To examine possible differences in underlying neurophysiological patterns for adolescent patients with PTSD after childhood sexual and/or physical abuse (CSA/CPA), ERP correlates of emotional word processing in 38 healthy participants and

Social aversive conditioning in youth at clinical high risk for psychosis and with psychosis: An ERP study.

BACKGROUND: Social cognition and emotion processing are compromised in schizophrenia. Disruptions in these domains may also be present during the psychosis-risk state. Aversive conditioning is an established translational research paradigm to investigate affective reactivity and learning. Using an aversive conditioning ERP paradigm with social cues, we examined whether psychosis patients and at-risk youths differentially respond to aversively conditioned faces. METHODS: Participants (ages 10-30) were enrolled into three demographically-matched groups: clinical risk for psychosis (CR, n = 32),

Detecting awareness in patients with disorders of consciousness using a hybrid brain-computer interface.

OBJECTIVE: The bedside detection of potential awareness in patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC) currently relies only on behavioral observations and tests; however, the misdiagnosis rates in this patient group are historically relatively high. In this study, we proposed a visual hybrid brain-computer interface (BCI) combining P300 and steady-state evoked potential (SSVEP) responses to detect awareness in severely brain injured patients. APPROACH: Four healthy subjects, seven DOC patients who were in a vegetative state (VS, n = 4) or minimally conscious state (MCS, n = 3), and one lo
