A 73-year-old woman with myelodysplastic syndrome and diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, received a diagnosis of facial cellulitis and was treated by antibiotics. However, her symptoms deteriorated. Facial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed orbital cellulitis. She had weakness of visual acuity requiring changing the antibiotics. She also underwent steroid pulse treatment. Her symptoms temporarily improved, but she became comatose and died. Results of a molecular analysis of the residual cerebrospinal fluid indicated Rhizopus species infection. For

Early cases of facial nerve injury are best treated by restoring the neural pathway to the same existing facial muscles. Knowledge of the exact territory of facial nerve injury is required to design a plane for the reconstruction of these injuries and to compare results. The current study aims to design a classification system for territories of facial nerve injury based on the location of nearest healthy fascicles to the site of injury both proximally and distally. Two hundred-one patients with early facial nerve injury were assessed for treatment. According to the results of the exploration,

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injuries are a common clinical problem which may result in permanent loss of motor or sensory function. A better understanding of the signaling pathways that lead to successful nerve regeneration may help in discovering new therapeutic targets. The Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway plays significant roles in nerve development and regeneration. In a mouse model of facial nerve injury, Hedgehog-responsive fibroblasts increase in number both at the site of injury and within the distal nerve. However, the role of these cells in facial nerve regeneration is not fully unde

PURPOSE: Falls are a leading cause of nonfatal injury in the pediatric population, resulting in numerous hospitalizations. Children may not have fully developed reflexive and balancing abilities, rendering them more susceptible to traumatic falls. Here the authors present their findings regarding patterns of facial fracture and concomitant injury seen in the pediatric population secondary to falls.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of all facial fractures as a result of falls in the pediatric population in a level 1 trauma center in an urban environment (University Hospital

To investigate the topographical relationship between the frontal branch of the superficial temporal artery (FSTA) and the temporal branch of the facial nerve (TFN) with the aim of preventing nerve injury during FSTA biopsy. Fifty-seven hemifaces of 33 cadavers were dissected. Vertical lines drawn to the lateral orbital margin (LOM) and the superior root of the helix were used as the anterior and posterior reference positions, respectively. Horizontal lines drawn through the supraorbital margin and lateral canthus were used as the superior and inferior reference points, respectively. The depth

OBJECTIVE: To research the early acute response events of facial nerve injury.
METHODS: Sixty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 2 groups. Facial nerve anastomosis was performed for rats in study group. Rats in control group underwent the same surgical procedure, but without cutting off the facial nerve. Before nerve anastomosis and at days 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 after nerve anastomosis, 5 rats of each group were selected and right side brainstem tissue samples containing the facial nerve nucleus were obtained. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and TUNEL detection was perform

We conducted a retrospective study to compare the clinical characteristics of external auditory canal cholesteatoma (EACC) with those of a similar entity, keratosis obturans (KO). We also sought to identify those aspects of each disease that may lead to complications. We identified 6 patients in each group. Imaging studies were reviewed for evidence of bony erosion and the proximity of disease to vital structures. All 6 patients in the EACC group had their diagnosis confirmed by computed tomography (CT), which demonstrated widening of the bony external auditory canal; 4 of these patients had c

INTRODUCTION: Clinical laser settings have traditionally been calibrated on abdominal skin to predict and anticipate patterns of injuries in facial skin. This experimental approach has limitations as facial skin and abdominal skin have differences that may influence the depth of laser injury.
OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study is to analyze the acute pattern of laser injury in abdominal skin and facial skin samples from the same subject and detail the anatomical and biophysical properties that can influence the laser tissue interaction. The secondary objective is to develop a conv

Oro-facial pain following injury and infection is frequently observed in dental clinics. While neuropathic pain evoked by injury associated with nerve lesion has an involvement of glia/immune cells, inflammatory hyperalgesia has an exaggerated sensitization mediated by local and circulating immune mediators. To better understand the contribution of central nervous system (CNS) glial cells in these different pathological conditions, in this study we sought to characterize functional phenotypes of glial cells in response to trigeminal nerve injury (loose ligation of the mental branch), infection

The rate of nerve regeneration is a critical determinant of the degree of functional recovery after injury. Here, we sought to determine whether treatment with the neuroprotective compound, agmatine, with or without nerve reconstruction utilizing a regional autogenous vein graft would accelerate the rate of facial nerve regeneration. Experiments compared the following seven groups of adult male rats: (A) Intact untreated controls. (B) Sham operation with interruption of the nerve blood supply (controls). (C) Transection of the mandibular branch of the facial nerve (generating a gap of 3 mm) fo

Short-latency effects of unilateral facial nerve transection were studied on neuronal activation evoked in the primary motor cortex (MI) on both sides by vibrissa stimulation in adult rats. In the controls, unilateral trigeminal stimulation evoked activity in the whisker representation of both the contralateral somatosensory cortex (SI) and MI, but never in the ipsilateral MI. Unilateral transection of the facial motoric nerve facilitated evoked responses in the contralateral MI, and induced further neuronal activation (gross potentials and unit activity) in the MI ipsilateral to the stimulati

The cases with combined maxillofacial injuries and traumas of other localization should be considered as cases of a higher risk of septic complications. The specialized stomatologic acid ought to be rendered to such cases with the nearest post-shock period, not later then within 36 hours after trauma. The analysis of 291 clinical observations is set forth.

In traumatic peripheral facial nerve paralysis, the risk of permanent sequelae remains high despite current surgical and medical treatments. Edaravone is a free radical scavenger with antioxidant and antiapoptotic properties; however, its efficacy in facial nerve injury has not yet been established. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of edaravone on facial nerve recovery following crush injury in a rat model. Thirty rats were randomly assigned to 3 groups (n=10 per group): group 1 (saline-treated control), group 2 (methylprednisolone-treated), and group 3 (edaravone-treated). Facial paral
