PURPOSE: We sought to introduce our classification and reconstruction protocol for skull base erosions in the temporomandibular joint and skull base region.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with neoplasms in the temporomandibular joint and skull base region treated from January 2006 to March 2017 were reviewed. Skull base erosion was classified into 3 types according to the size of the defect.
RESULTS: We included 33 patients, of whom 5 (15.2%) had type I defects (including 3 in whom free fat grafts were placed and 2 in whom deep temporal fascial fat flaps were placed). There were 8 patients (

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma represents only 0.4% of salivary gland neoplasms. Generally affecting the parotid gland, it has been reported only twice in the sublingual gland. Controversies concerning the treatment of lymphoepithelial carcinoma exist. Although the literature generally agrees that primary surgery with adjuvant radiotherapy is part of the treatment, the benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy is not well described. This report describes the case of a 55-year-old man diagnosed with lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the sublingual gland. The patient was admitted for progressive pain in the floo

Vestibular schwannomas (VS), benign intracranial tumors originating from the vestibulocochlear nerve, usually present with hearing loss, tinnitus, and balance dysfunction. Rarely, however, if untreated, these neoplasms can cause significant patient compromise - resulting in facial paralysis, brainstem compression, and even death. Those with vestibular schwannomas currently choose between surgery and stereotactic radiation therapy as available treatment options. Unfortunately, no medical therapies are presently U.S. Food & Drug Administration approved, representing an urgent and unmet clinical

Chondrosarcoma is a malignant tumor characterized by the formation of cartilage, but not bone, by tumor cells. Only 5% to 10% of chondrosarcomas occur in the head and neck, representing 0.1% of all head and neck neoplasms, with the larynx and the maxillo-nasal region being the most common sites. This report describes an unusual case of chondrosarcoma in a 54-year-old man who presented with pain and swelling in the left preauricular area. Computed tomography demonstrated a soft tissue mass in the left temporomandibular joint without causing erosion of the adjacent bony structures. The tumor was

Superior vena cava syndrome results from obstruction of flow through the vessel either by external compression or thrombosis. External compression by intrathoracic neoplasms is the most common etiology. Thrombosis of the vessel most often occurs in the setting of indwelling catheters or pacemakers. The diagnosis is suggested by the clinical manifestations of facial and upper extremity swelling, dyspnea, and cough. It is confirmed by CT scan showing the development of collateral flow around the lesion. In this report, we present a patient who developed superior vena cava thrombosis after underg

The technique of inferior mastoidectomy-hypotympanic dissection, with preservation of the middle and inner ear structures, has been established for radical surgical removal of glomus tumors involving the skull base. In order to study the gross anatomic differences and correlate with the computed tomography (CT) scan, 20 human temporal bones were dissected and accurate measurements between vital structures were made. This study revealed a wide variation in distances between the neurovascular structures, whereas the distances between inner ear structures were not statistically different. This or

Rhabdomyosarcomatoid renal tumors were initially described as a subset of tumors in the National Wilms Tumor Study that had light microscopic features similar to rhabdomyosarcomas. Subsequent studies failed to reveal evidence of muscle differentiation, thus the genesis of the term "rhabdoid" tumor. Such renal tumors are rapidly lethal. Recent reports suggest the occurrence of tumors with similar morphology in other anatomic sites. We wish to report a primary malignant rhabdoid tumor of the facial skin with detailed immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies. Vimentin was expressed in the

BACKGROUND: Castleman disease (CD) comprises a heterogeneous group of lymphoproliferative disorders. Unicentric CD (UCD) involving the adrenal region is uncommon and poses diagnostic challenges because it can resemble adrenal neoplasms.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old female presented with a 10-year history of intermittent hyperhidrosis and facial flushing, and a one-month history of right chest and abdominal pain. Imaging revealed a 53 mm × 42 mm heterogeneous mass in the left adrenal region with calcification and marked enhancement. Endocrine evaluation showed no hormonal hypersecretion. T

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are a group of uncommon neoplasms derived from enterochromaffin or Kulchitsky cells (that secrete serotonin or other molecules into the bloodstream), which can manifest with symptoms of hormonal overproduction, namely carcinoid syndrome (CS). This can be the presenting feature in patients with advanced disease. We report the case of a 66-year-old woman presenting with chronic diarrhea, facial venous telangiectasia and elevated urinary 5-hydrocyindoleacetic acid levels. A 68-Ga DOTATOC PET/CT scan revealed an ileal mass and lesions consistent with liver, ovary and b

Trigeminal neuralgia is a recurrent episode of facial pain, that may be associated with other conditions such as multiple sclerosis, neoplasms, and nerve compromises or may occur due to an unknown cause. The available treatments are pharmacotherapy or surgery; however, both are susceptible to develop side effects. Photobiomodulation could be a promising alternative therapy for trigeminal neuralgia. A systematic review of literature was carried out using the PRISMA protocol, in the PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science databases. Risk of bias by ROB 2.0 protocol was performed in included s

BACKGROUND: Pleomorphic adenomas are benign salivary gland tumors, which predominantly affect the superficial lobe of the parotid gland. The "pleomorphic" nature of the tumor can be explained on the basis of its epithelial and connective tissue origin. The tumor has a female predilection between 30-50 years of age. Slowly progressing asymptomatic swelling is the usual presentation of the tumor. Surgical excision of the tumor mass forms the mainstay of treatment, with utmost care taken to preserve the facial nerve.
CASE DETAILS: This case report aims to throw light on an interesting case of pl

INTRODUCTION: Meningiomas are slow-growing, benign tumours originating from the arachnoid villi of the meninges. They account for 13 to 26 per cent of all intracranial neoplasms. Less than 1 per cent of all meningiomas are primary extracranial tumours of the ear and temporal bone. Intracranial meningiomas extending to the middle-ear cleft are uncommon, with fewer than 100 cases reported to date. Presenting symptoms of the latter condition may include hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness, vertigo and facial palsy. Otitis media with effusion secondary to eustachian tube dysfunction has also been re

Enlargement of the cheeks may be due to a multitude of disorders, congenital, neoplastic, and in particular inflammatory. Congenital facial anomalies include cutaneous (and osseous) hemihypertrophy of the face and unilateral angiomatous malformations (e.g. Sturge-Weber-Krabbe Syndrome). Buccal enlargement due to dermal tumours include localized haemangiomas and lymphangiomas, lipomas and other benign connective tissue neoplasms, generalized disorders of the lymphatic or reticuloendothelial system including mycosis fungoides, reticulum cell sarcoma and other soft tissue malignancies, and cutane

Schwannomas (neurilemomas) are benign, slow-growing, encapsulated, white, yellow, or pink tumors originating in Schwann cells in the sheaths of cranial nerves or myelinated peripheral nerves. Facial nerve schwannomas (FNS) can form anywhere along the course of the nerve, from the pontocerebellar angle to the terminal branches of the facial nerve. In this article, we propose a review of the specialized literature regarding the diagnostic and therapeutic management of schwannomas of the extracranial segment of the facial nerve, also presenting our experience in this type of rare neurogenic tumor

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Several neoplastic lesions may originate from facial nerves, including facial nerve schwannomas. These neoplastic lesions can cause various symptoms, such as facial nerve paralysis, and decrease the quality of life of patients. Therefore, knowledge of how to manage these diseases is important for otologists. However, the incidence of these diseases is extremely low, and universal management methods have not yet been established. This review summarizes recent advances in knowledge regarding these neoplastic lesions, especially facial nerve schwannomas.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recen

BACKGROUND: In this report, we describe the first case in literature of a patient with multiple schwannomas of the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve.
CASE PRESENTATION: A Caucasian patient presented with a sudden onset of left lower facial nerve palsy House-Brackmann score III for 1 month. Computed tomography imaging was performed to exclude a cerebral event and revealed multiple tumors within the left parotid gland. Duplex ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging scans delineated multiple, hypoechoic tumors, round in shape and well defined without a hilar structure along the le

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the possibility of predicting facial nerve involvement in the patients with parotid tumors using facial electroneurography (ENoG).
METHODS: In the study, 53 patients with primary parotid tumors were included in the study, 28 were benign tumors and 25 were malignant. There was no significant difference of tumor locations and sizes between the two groups. House-Brackmann facial nerve function evaluation was grade I in all the patients who received examination of facial electroneurography, including stimulation strength, amplitude, and latent time bilaterally. Hypoglossofacial anastomoses was performed in 19 patients, in the majority of cases for tumors located in the pontocerebellar angle. Results were a total success in 16 cases, one patient has not been seen again, and operation had been performed too recently to assess results in two cases. Anastomosis was conducted during initial surgery in 12 cases, and at a later stage in the other 7. In one patient, anastomosis 3 years after facial paralysis following excision of an acoustic nerve neuroma resulted in satisfactory re-innervation of the face after 13 months. Results were not significantly diff
