Emotional facial palsy (EFP) is a rare condition in which facial paresis is only apparent during reflex movements of the hemiface, such as smiling and laughter. We report the case of a 32-year-old man presenting with EFP as the main symptom of a small striatocapsular infarction. Our case strongly suggests that the anterior arm of the internal capsule is part of the corticonuclear tract that is involved in emotional facial motility.

When facial nerve axotomy (FNA) is performed on immunodeficient recombinase activating gene-2 knockout (RAG-2-/-) mice, there is greater facial motoneuron (FMN) death relative to wild type (WT) mice. Reconstituting RAG-2-/- mice with whole splenocytes rescues FMN survival after FNA, and CD4+ T cells specifically drive immune-mediated neuroprotection. Evidence suggests that immunodysregulation may contribute to motoneuron death in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Immunoreconstitution of RAG-2-/- mice with lymphocytes from the mutant superoxide dismutase (mSOD1) mouse model of ALS revealed t

Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) evoked by click stimuli were recorded in both ears of 20 normal human subjects, in the presence and absence of a contralateral masking broad band noise. No difference in the amplitude of OAE suppression was noted between the first tested ear and the second one. In addition, 20 pathological subjects were tested according to the same protocol. Ten of them belonged to a group of patients whose vestibular nerve was sectioned on one side to relieve incapacitating vertigo and thus represented a group in whom olivocochlear efferents were severed. A great reduction of supp

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the time-dependent differences in growth associated protein-43 (GAP-43) mRNA expression in the nucleus ambiguus (NA) motoneurons after recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) transection in the rat.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Animals were sacrificed on Days 1, 7, 14 and 21 after axotomy. The sections were then processed for in situ hybridization of GAP-43 mRNA.
RESULTS: GAP-43 mRNA transiently increased after axotomy, reaching a peak on postoperative Day 7, and then decreased gradually at 14 and 21 days after axotomy. The peak period of GAP-43 expression in the NA is different f

We report on a 17-year-old male with severe pre- and postnatal growth retardation, craniosynostosis, distinctive facial features, acanthosis nigricans, deafness, mental retardation and progressive multi-organ involvement, particularly of the endocrine system, including hypothyroidism, hypogonadism, transitory hypoparathyroidism, and insulin resistance. In order to find a common mechanism explaining these multiple abnormalities, we searched for a possible defect in the signal transduction pathways from membrane to nucleus involving G-protein coupled receptors (GPCR). The case presented here is a three-month-old male infant with the Beckwith-Wiedemann's syndrome. Clinically, the patient was characterized by macroglossia, visceromegaly, umbilical hernia, microcephalus and other multiple malformations such as facial flame nevus or ear lobe grooves. The patient died of bronchopneumonia at the age of three months, and an autopsy was performed. Morphological examination revealed adrenal cytomegaly, hyperplasia and hypertrophy of the pancreatic islets, adrenal rest tissue in the right testis or hypertrophy of muscle fibers of the tongue associated with fibrous de

PURPOSE: There is no uniformity in the literature about the core features required to make the diagnosis of Möbius sequence. Originally, the minimum requirements were the bilateral paralysis of the VI and the VII cranial nerves. The bilateral facial nerve paralysis or paresis, often asymmetric, is common to all patients but some facts show that the isolated VI nerve palsy in the Möbius sequence is not the rule. 1) When there is an esotropia in Möbius sequence, it is often too small to be caused by a bilateral isolated VI nerve palsy. There are many cases in which there is no esotropia in the p

Cranial motor neurons (cMNs), form discrete nuclei that control diverse behaviors such as eye movement, feeding, facial expression, and regulation of visceral organ function. However, the developmental programs that drive cMN target choices and functional specialization have not been comprehensively studied in any vertebrate. Here, we present an integrated single-cell RNA-sequencing atlas of zebrafish cMN development and perform extensive validation by HCR in situ hybridization. We find that each cranial motor nucleus expresses a distinct transcriptional signature, and in many cases, we identi

Thalamo-cortical networks are central to seizures, yet it is unclear how these circuits initiate seizures. We test whether a facial region of the thalamus, the ventral posteromedial nucleus (VPM), is a source of generalized, convulsive motor seizures and if convergent VPM input drives the behavior. To address this question, we devise an in vivo optogenetic mouse model to elicit convulsive motor seizures by driving these inputs and perform single-unit recordings during awake, convulsive seizures to define the local activity of thalamic neurons before, during, and after seizure onset. We find dy

Trigeminal neuralgia is a peripheral neuropathy characterized by intermittent episodes of severe facial pain originating in the sensory nucleus of the trigeminal nerve. The most commonly involved area is the mandibular division with a higher prevalence on the right side. Advances in the field of MRI have played an important role in its diagnosis, especially in presurgical assessment, to probe into any secondary causes of nerve compression and/or neurovascular conflict. The condition is primarily managed medically, although many patients may require surgical or radiotherapeutic intervention. A

Background Epicrania fugax has been described as a primary headache. Nevertheless, a symptomatic form was recently found in a patient with a skull base meningioma abutting the trigeminal nerve. Here we report on a patient with facial pain with the features of epicrania fugax occurring after Wallenberg's syndrome. Case report A 53-year-old man suffered a right-sided dorsolateral medullary ischaemic stroke. Nine months later, he presented with brief electric shock-like paroxysms of pain stemming from the right eye and radiating to the ipsilateral forehead, the temple or the cheek in a zigzag tra

We report here a post-mortem examination of a 46-year-old patient who died after a 23-year-long syringomyelia-like syndrome of Tangier disease. The L5 dorsal root and the superficial peroneal nerve showed fiber loss and lipid vacuole accumulation in Schwann cell cytoplasm. The L5 ventral root had moderate fiber loss without lipid vacuoles. In the cervical roots, fiber loss was intense and there were no foamy Schwann cells. Motor neuron loss was severe in the cervical spinal cord and the facial nerve nucleus and slight at the lumbar level. Under electron microscopy, some neurons of the lower sp

The clinical observations in five patients, of a family of catalan origin (NE of Spain), affected with Machado-Joseph disease are reported. The pedigree showed the presence of 22 members affected (15 men, 7 women) over six generations. The symptoms and signs were variable among the patients and also variable in a same patient during the course of the disease. However, the main neurological alterations were ataxia, akinesia, distal amyotrophy, progressive external ophthalmoplegia, facial and lingual fasciculations and bulging eyes. The neuropathological examination performed in one patient disc

The neuronal nuclei (NeuN) antibody, which binds to a poorly characterized antigen/antigens, is increasingly being used in several areas of study as a specific marker to identify neuronal populations. Despite the increasing reliance on NeuN as a panneuronal marker, changes of NeuN expression following axonal injury have not yet been examined. In the present study, NeuN immunoreactivity was analyzed in adult rodent facial motoneurons [peripheral nervous system (PNS) model] following nerve resection or crush and in rubrospinal neurons [central nervous system (CNS) model] after lesion of the dors

The brain predicts action outcomes using interacting neuronal systems that integrate sensory feedback, movement, and rewards. In the mouse whisker system, we investigated whether two presumed predictive mechanisms jointly attenuate ascending tactile signals during movement. To this end, we employed an open-loop whisker-reach task that monitored facial nucleus motor activity and presented experimental tactile consequences while measuring tactile attenuation in the barrel cortex. Experimentally manipulating sensory consequences revealed two distinct systems. Sensory gating, a previously document…
