The effect of emotion intensity on time perception: a study with transcranial random noise stimulation.

Emotional facial expressions provide cues for social interactions and emotional events can distort our sense of time. The present study investigates the effect of facial emotional stimuli of anger and sadness on time perception. Moreover, to investigate the causal role of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) in emotional recognition, we employed transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) over OFC and tested the effect on participants' emotional recognition as well as on time processing. Participants performed a timing task in which they were asked to categorize as "short" or "long" temporal interv

Facial expression discrimination emerges from partially overlapping neural subspaces of detection and identity.

How does the human brain decode facial expressions? Addressing this question requires models that tightly link neural representations to behavior. Here, we first establish rhesus macaques as an animal model of human facial expression discrimination, showing strong behavioral correspondence across six expressions. To probe underlying neural mechanisms, we leverage artificial neural network (ANN) models of the ventral stream as explicit computational hypotheses explaining macaque behavior. Despite action unit-based stimulus generation and high classification accuracies of face-optimized models,

Scene effects on disgusted facial expression detection in individuals with social anxiety: The role of emotional intensity.

Individuals exhibiting high social anxiety (HSA) typically encounter challenges in identifying threatening stimuli with varying levels of intensity in different social scenes, ultimately affecting their social interactions. However, it is not well understood how social scenes, emotional intensity, and interaction influence the recognition of threat stimuli among HSA individuals (HSAs). To address this issue, a face recognition task was administered to 20 HSA participants and 22 individuals exhibiting low social anxiety (LSA) in this study. Results indicated that during the social scene present

Is characterizing the digital forensic facial reconstruction with hair necessary? A familiar assessors' analysis.

BACKGROUND: In the international scientific literature, there are few studies that emphasize the presence or absence of hair in forensic facial reconstructions. There are neither Brazilian studies concerning digital facial reconstructions without hair, nor research comparing recognition tests between digital facial reconstructions with hair and without hair. The miscegenation of Brazilian people is considerable. Brazilian people, and, in particular, Brazilian women, even if considered as Caucasoid, may present the hair in very different ways: curly, wavy or straight, blonde, red, brown or blac

The inter-association between face processing, intelligence, and autistic-like nonverbal communication.

The degree to which face processing abilities inter-relate, and associate with general intelligence, remains a contentious issue. Furthermore, poorer face processing abilities may be a result of reduced social interest associated with higher levels of trait-autism, consistent with the social motivation theory of autism. However, the association between multiple dimensions of face processing (i.e., a general face factor) and trait-autism, specifically autistic-like nonverbal communication, has not been estimated. Consequently, we administered four face processing ability tests (assessing face d

Face processing deficits following brain tumours: Behavioural correlates and surgery-sensitive hotspots.

INTRODUCTION: Face processing deficits have mostly been documented in single cases/small samples, and rarely following brain tumours. Right hemisphere functions in general are under-investigated in brain tumour patients, despite the need to preserve them during surgery. We assessed anatomical correlates of a critical right hemisphere function, face processing, and specifically deficits in memorizing and recognizing unknown faces; decoding emotional expressions; and whether deficits are preferentially right lateralized, or could also be observed following left hemisphere damage. METHODS: 110 p

Emotion recognition in deaf individuals: evidence from event-related potentials.

Previous studies have found that deaf signers exhibited lower accuracy when recognizing emotional expressions from top-half faces compared to hearing non-signers. This suggests that the lack of emotional information from the oral region has a greater impact on deaf signers due to differences in their gaze patterns. The current study aimed to replicate and extend these findings by measuring recognition accuracy under varied facial conditions and analyzing late positive potential (LPP) amplitudes. Based on previous research, it was hypothesized that deaf signers would show reduced recognition ac

Effects of tDCS on emotion recognition and brain oscillations.

INTRODUCTION: Emotion recognition, the ability to interpret the emotional state of individuals by looking at their facial expressions, is essential for healthy social interactions and communication. There is limited research on the effects of tDCS on emotion recognition in the literature. This study aimed to investigate the effects of anodal stimulation of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), a key region for emotion recognition from facial expressions, on emotion recognition and brain oscillations. METHOD: A single-blind randomized-controlled study was conducted with 54 healthy partic

Neuroimaging and facial affect processing: implications for traumatic brain injury.

The ability to recognize others' emotions is critical to successful interpersonal interactions. Given its importance, there has been an extensive amount of research using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neurobiological mechanisms associated with facial affect recognition in healthy individuals, and some in patient populations with affective disorders. Findings from these studies reveal that the underlying mechanisms involve a distributed neural network, engaging structures within limbic and subcortical regions, prefrontal cortex, temporal and parietal lobes, and

Emotion recognition deficits in temporal lobe epilepsy are non-lateralized and independent of surgery.

UNLABELLED: To examine whether patients with unilateral temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) show deficits in recognizing emotions from facial expressions and vocal prosody, and whether these impairments differ by seizure focus or surgical status. METHODS: Thirty-four patients with TLE were evaluated before or after temporal lobe resection for drug-resistant epilepsy. Thirty right-handed healthy controls without neurological or psychiatric history were included. Emotion recognition was assessed using the Emotion Recognition Test (ERT), consisting of a Facial ERT (adapted from Ekman and Friesen's faci

Visual self-face and self-body recognition in a left-brain-damaged prosopagnosic patient.

The present case study describes the patient N.G., who reported prosopagnosia along with difficulty in recognising herself in the mirror following a left-sided temporo-occipital hemispheric stroke. The neuropsychological and experimental investigation revealed only a mild form of apperceptive prosopagnosia, without visual agnosia, primarily caused by an impaired visual processing of face-parts and body parts but not of full faces. Emotional expressions did not modulate her face processing. On the other hand, N.G. showed a marked impairment of visual self-recognition, as assessed with visual ma

Social cognition impairments in long-term opiate users in treatment.

BACKGROUND: Long-term opiate users experience pervasive social difficulties, but there has been surprisingly limited research focused on social-cognitive functioning in this population. AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate whether three important aspects of social cognition (facial emotion recognition, theory of mind (ToM) and rapid facial mimicry) differ between long-term opiate users and healthy controls. METHODS: The participants were 25 long-term opiate users who were enrolled in opiate substitution programmes, and 25 healthy controls. Facial emotion recognition accuracy was ind

Investigation of a dysmorphic facial phenotype in patients with Gaucher disease types 2 and 3.

Gaucher disease (GD) is a rare lysosomal storage disorder that is divided into three subtypes based on presentation of neurological manifestations. Distinguishing between the types has important implications for treatment and counseling. Yet, patients with neuronopathic forms of GD, types 2 and 3, often present at young ages and can have overlapping phenotypes. It has been shown that new technologies employing artificial intelligence and facial recognition software can assist with dysmorphology assessments. Though classically not associated nor previously described with a dysmorphic facial phe…

Emotion Recognition in Face and Body Motion in Bulimia Nervosa.

Social cognition has been studied extensively in anorexia nervosa (AN), but there are few studies in bulimia nervosa (BN). This study investigated the ability of people with BN to recognise emotions in ambiguous facial expressions and in body movement. Participants were 26 women with BN, who were compared with 35 with AN, and 42 healthy controls. Participants completed an emotion recognition task by using faces portraying blended emotions, along with a body emotion recognition task by using videos of point-light walkers. The results indicated that BN participants exhibited difficulties recogni

"Looking at nothing": An implicit ocular motor index of face recognition in developmental prosopagnosia.

Subjects often look towards to previous location of a stimulus related to a task even when that stimulus is no longer visible. In this study we asked whether this effect would be preserved or reduced in subjects with developmental prosopagnosia. Participants learned faces presented in video-clips and then saw a brief montage of four faces, which was replaced by a screen with empty boxes, at which time they indicated whether the learned face had been present in the montage. Control subjects were more likely to look at the blank location where the learned face had appeared, on both hit and miss

The perception and identification of facial emotions in individuals with autism spectrum disorders using the Let's Face It! Emotion Skills Battery.

BACKGROUND: Although impaired social-emotional ability is a hallmark of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the perceptual skills and mediating strategies contributing to the social deficits of autism are not well understood. A perceptual skill that is fundamental to effective social communication is the ability to accurately perceive and interpret facial emotions. To evaluate the expression processing of participants with ASD, we designed the Let's Face It! Emotion Skills Battery (LFI! Battery), a computer-based assessment composed of three subscales measuring verbal and perceptual skills implica

Bihippocampal damage with emotional dysfunction: impaired auditory recognition of fear.

A right-handed man developed a sudden transient, amnestic syndrome associated with bilateral hemorrhage of the hippocampi, probably due to Urbach-Wiethe disease. In the 3rd month, despite significant hippocampal structural damage on imaging, only a milder degree of retrograde and anterograde amnesia persisted on detailed neuropsychological examination. On systematic testing of recognition of facial and vocal expression of emotion, we found an impairment of the vocal perception of fear, but not that of other emotions, such as joy, sadness and anger. Such selective impairment of fear perception

Beyond faces: The effect of context on ensemble emotion perception.

The ability to judge the overall emotion of a crowd is fundamental to navigating naturalistic social scenes. However, research has typically studied such judgments using isolated faces, without any contextual information. In two experiments, this study investigates how facial expressions, background context, and observers' emotional states jointly influence ensemble emotion perception in naturalistic scenes. In Experiment 1, participants judged the overall emotion of crowd scenes that were constructed by superimposing human figures, whose facial emotional values were quantified on a continuous

Emotion Recognition in a Community Sample of Children: Unpacking the Contribution of Psychopathic Traits.

This study explored how the three psychopathy dimensions— Grandiose-Deceitful (GD), Callous-Unemotional (CU) and Impulsive-Need for Stimulation (INS)—are related to emotion recognition in a community sample of 345 children (52.2% male) aged 8 to 12 (M = 10.31 years). Participants viewed static facial images depicting basic emotions (i.e., happiness, sadness, fear, anger, and neutral) while accuracy, reaction time (RT), and attentional patterns (via eye-tracking) were recorded. Regarding the accuracy of emotion recognition, CU traits were the only psychopathic dimension significantly associated
