As part of a larger analysis focused on family members and adult peers bereaved by a drug-related death (DRD), the present study explores how stigmatization is experienced in pre-death interactions. Respondents were asked about the decedent's history of substance use, experiences with addiction treatment, and the events leading up to the DRD through 35 semi-structured qualitative interviews. Feelings of shame and guilt are factors associated with depression. However, studies simultaneously investigating shame and guilt suggest that only shame has a strong unique effect, although it is not yet clear which psychological processes cause shame and not shame-free guilt to be related to depression. We report a case of Huntington's disease (HD) in a 53-year-old male with multiple sclerosis (MS). The diagnosis of MS met the McDonald criteria and was based on clinical attacks separated in space and time, cerebrospinal fluid, and MRI. The diagnosis of HD was established by DNA testing, family history, and positron emission tomography. While a number of neurologic and autoimmune diseases have been reported with MS, this is the first co-occurrence of HD and MS. Salient features of both disorders are reviewed as well as the importance of obtaining a thorough family history.

Bipolar patients with alcoholism were compared to nonalcoholic bipolar patients on clinical and family history variables. All patients were systematically examined using a structured interview. Three members of a family with numerous ectodermal abnormalities are described. These anomalies primarily include patchy alopecia beginning in childhood, premature cataracts, widespread keratosis pilaris, and psoriasis. DESIGN: We examined 3 generations in a family for congenital conductive hearing impairment, dysmorphic small auricles, and lip pits.
SETTING: Department of Otorhinolaryngology, University Hospital Nijmegen, Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
RESULTS: Seven members of the family had bilateral dysmorphic auricles. Three subjects had either a pit or dimple in the lip. Two subjects had congenital conductive hearing impairment.
CONCLUSION: Using gene linkage, we confirmed that these autosomal dominant inherited branchial anomalies present a new separate branchial arch syndrome.

A 14-year-old girl was evaluated for patchy hair loss present from early childhood. Her mother was found to have a similar condition. When studied in transverse section, biopsy specimens from both women showed marked anagen-telogen transformation that circumstantially appears to be irreversible. Preservation of telogen epithelium with absence of inflammation and scarring readily separate focal familial alopecia from the pseudopelade state and from localized alopecia areata. To our knowledge, this is the first description of a new familial disorder causing focal alopecia.

Familial breast-ovarian cancer has been demonstrated to be frequent but unevenly distributed in Norway. This was assumed to be caused by the reduced population size created by the medieval Bubonic plagues 25 generations ago, and by the following rapid expansion. We have previously reported that four mutations account for 68% of the BRCA1 mutation carriers.
