Comparative Analysis of the Gut Microbiota of Thai Indigenous Chicken Fed House Crickets.

The gut microbiota is pivotal to chickens' overall health, influencing digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function. Dietary compounds significantly impact gut microbiota composition. House crickets (Acheta domesticus) have emerged as an alternative protein source for animal feed, rich in proteins and beneficial fatty acids. This study compared the gut microbiota in the cecum and ileum of Thai indigenous chicken breeds (Betong Chicken, white feather with black bone chicken, and black feather with black bone chicken) fed with or without house crickets. Using Oxford Nanopore Technology of

Preference and behavioral responses to synbiotic supplementation via drinking water in laying hens under social stress.

Synbiotics (SYN) have the potential to enhance animal health, but their efficacy depends on both biological impact and voluntary intake, particularly under stress, when hydration and gut support are critical. This study presents the first investigation of SYN supplementation delivered exclusively through drinking water in laying hens, evaluating both preference and behavioral responses, particularly feather pecking, during a period of social stress induced by repeated mixing of unfamiliar birds. A total of 226 White Leghorn hens (37 weeks old) were housed in enriched floor pens with simultaneo

Salivary gland lipomas: ultrasonographic and magnetic resonance imaging.

To facilitate a diagnosis of a lipoma, specific imaging is needed such as ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Two male patients exhibiting a soft tissue tumor in the salivary gland area were examined using sonography and MRI. Final diagnosis was identified by excision biopsy. Ultrasound showed a hypoechoic, feathered, mostly ovoid structure. Color Doppler sonography does not detect any signals besides in cases of angiolipoma. This is accompanied by vessels and does not show the typical feathered structure. With MRI, it is possible to confirm the diagnosis by visualization of fat-eq

Physiological and biochemical aspects of the avian uropygial gland.

This review discusses different aspects of the uropygial gland of birds. The gland exhibits a striking morphological diversity in size, shape and presence/absence of tufts of feathers. It was shown that acidic mucins, neutral lipids, glycolipids and phospholipids are normal components of secretion. Several morphological and physiological aspects of the gland were studied on Rock Pigeon Columba livia Gmelin, 1879. The amount of the uropygial gland secretion, its lipid content and fatty acids profile were determined. The extracted lipid mixture contained of C14 to C20 fatty acids, mostly unsatur…

Diversity of obligate ectoparasites and parasitism patterns in wild birds of the Balearic Islands: new chewing lice records for Spain.

Ectoparasites are commonly found on wild birds and might play an important role as vectors of pathogens. The Balearic Islands archipelago (Spain) is an ecological hotspot for wild birds due to its geographical location and habitat diversity. Although the avian fauna of the archipelago is well studied, little information is available regarding the ectoparasites infesting its wild bird populations. This study aimed to identify the diversity of ectoparasites (chewing lice, louse flies and ticks) and feather mites on wild birds in several locations on Menorca Island, as well as to assess the preva

First Retrospective Study of Avian Mercury Exposure in a Tropical ASGM Hotspot.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is the largest anthropogenic source of mercury globally. Few studies have explored how this toxicant affects avian wildlife in Indonesia, an ASGM hotspot. Here, we use feather samples from museum specimens (n = 92) of Indonesian birds to examine changes through time in methylmercury (MeHg), diet, and foraging habitat (inferred from stable isotope ratios of nitrogen, δ15N, and carbon, δ13C, respectively). We ask how MeHg changes between time period (1860-1980 vs. 1980-2019) given increases in mercury emissions due to ASGM and describe how foraging gu

Lymphoma in two wild tawny frogmouths (Podargus strigoides) in Victoria.

Lymphoma was diagnosed in two wild tawny frogmouths (Podargus strigoides) presented to the Australian Wildlife Health Centre, Healesville Sanctuary, Victoria. The first case presented with extensive feather loss refractory to treatment. Bacterial and fungal folliculitis and beak and feather disease virus were excluded as primary causes, and the bird was euthanised due to poor response to treatment. Histopathological examination of the skin showed an extensive infiltrate of pleomorphic mononuclear leucocytes, suggestive of cutaneous lymphoma. Immunohistochemistry revealed >95% of these cells we

Safety and Efficacy of Pure and a Nanosuspension of D-limonene for Controlling Pigeon Lice.

This study investigated the safety and efficacy of two forms of D-limonene (DL) against Columbicola columbae (pigeon feather lice); pure and a nanoemulsion formulation (DLN). The cell cytotoxicity of the prepared forms of DL/DLN was investigated using skin cell lines. In vitro and ex vivo bioassays were applied on lice. The ex vivo bioassay was done on cut feathers containing lice eggs. The in vivo experiment was conducted on pigeons naturally infested by lice. The infested pigeons were treated with DL, DLN, or deltamethrin (D) as a positive control. Both forms of D-limonene were found to be s…

Experimental evidence for costs due to chewing lice in the European bee-eater (Merops apiaster).

Animals frequently host organisms on their surface which can be beneficial, have no effect or a negative effect on their host. Ectoparasites, by definition, are those which incur costs to their host, but these costs may vary. Examples of avian ectoparasites are chewing lice which feed exclusively on dead feather or skin material; therefore, costs to their bird hosts are generally considered small. Theoretically, many possible proximate effects exist, like loss of tissue or food, infected bites, transmission of microparasitic diseases or reduced body insulation due to loss of feathers, which ma…

Raptors as sentinels: unveiling the environmental and health risks of PFAS contamination.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are persistent environmental contaminants of global concern due to their bioaccumulative and toxic properties. Raptors, as apex predators, are valuable sentinel species for monitoring PFAS contamination because of biomagnification along food chains. This narrative review synthesizes current knowledge on PFAS occurrence, tissue distribution, temporal and spatial trends, and associated health effects in raptors worldwide. Studies consistently demonstrate PFAS ubiquity in raptor tissues (liver, blood, eggs, and feathers), with piscivorous species genera…

The mercury flow through a terrestrial songbird food chain in subtropical pine forest: Elucidated by Bayesian isotope mixing model and stable mercury isotopes.

In order to comprehend the transfer of inorganic mercury (IHg) and methylmercury (MeHg) within food chains in terrestrial pine forests, we c … tend to supply more IHg and diluting the proportion of MeHg as total Hg (MeHg%). Notably, nestling feathers displayed the highest Δ199Hg values but a relatively lower MeHg%, suggesting an imbalanced incorporation of Hg from maternal transfer and dietary accumulation during the nestling stage. This study highlights the efficacy of nestlings as indicators f …

Manganese turnover in chicks as affected by excess phosphorus consumption.

A repletion-depletion assay was conducted to evaluate the effect of Mn status and excess dietary P provided as dicalcium phosphate on Mn excretion and turnover. Chicks were fed either Mn-adequate (30 mg Mn/kg) or high Mn (1000 mg Mn/kg) casein-dextrose diets for 7 d. Following this loading period, the chicks were fed a Mn-deficient casein-dextrose diet (1.4 mg Mn/kg) with or without 0.5% excess P supplied from dicalcium phosphate. Whole body (without feathers) and selected body tissues (liver, kidney, gut, tibia and feathers) were assayed for Mn content at 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 6, 8, 1…

Partial albinism in a semi-isolated population of great reed warblers.

Albinism in birds is thought to result from the expression of recessive alleles that disrupt melanin pigmentation at feather development. We have studied great reed warblers Acrocephalus arundinaceus in a recently founded and increasing population in Sweden during 15 years for the presence of birds with albinistic feathers. The study population was founded in 1978 and the few cases of albinism was exclusively recorded during the first five years of our study (1985-1989). This fits to the expected pattern if albinism is governed by recessive alleles; we have previously demonstrated that the pop…

Poxvirus Infections in Common Swifts (Apus apus).

Members of the Genus Avipoxvirus have been reported in more than 374 avian species worldwide. Generally, poxviruses are considered to have a limited host range; however, canarypox-like viruses appear to infect a broader host range. In 2024, four juvenile common swifts in an age of 30 to 35 days from three different breeding sites of Lower Saxony, Germany, showed nodular, verrucous and crusted skin lesions of the wings, especially of the dorsal surface of the elbow and forearm region and the skin between the outer primary flight feathers. The skin on the head or the feet as well as the mucous m…

Evo Devo of the Vertebrates Integument.

All living jawed vertebrates possess teeth or did so ancestrally. Integumental surface also includes the cornea. Conversely, no other anatomical feature differentiates the clades so readily as skin appendages do, multicellular glands in amphibians, hair follicle/gland complexes in mammals, feathers in birds, and the different types of scales. Tooth-like scales are characteristic of chondrichthyans, while mineralized dermal scales are characteristic of bony fishes. Corneous epidermal scales might have appeared twice, in squamates, and on feet in avian lineages, but posteriorly to feathers. In c…

Generalist seabirds as biomonitors of ocean mercury: The importance of accurate trophic position assignment.

Monitoring mercury concentration in the marine environment is pivotal due to the risks that mercury intake poses to the ecosystem and human health. It is therefore of interest to make reliable, comparative measurements over large geographic areas. Here, the utility of wide-ranging generalist seabirds as mercury biomonitors at an ocean basin scale was assessed, using the Cory's Shearwater as a model species. The mercury concentration in flight feathers moulted at distant non-breeding areas of geolocator-tracked birds was quantified, reflecting contamination in various geographic areas. Compound…

Adaptive patterning of vascular network during avian skin development: Mesenchymal plasticity and dermal vasculogenesis.

A vasculature network supplies blood to feather buds in the developing skin. Does the vasculature network during early skin development form by sequential sprouting from the central vasculature or does local vasculogenesis occur first that then connect with the central vascular tree? Using transgenic Japanese quail Tg(TIE1p.H2B-eYFP), we observe that vascular progenitor cells appear after feather primordia formation. The vasculature then radiates out from each bud and connects with primordial vessels from neighboring buds. Later they connect with the central vasculature. Epithelial-mesenchymal
