Assessment of Nutrition and Feeding Interventions in Turkish Infants with Cleft Lip and/or Palate.

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to highlight the feeding challenges of infants with cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) that caregivers encounter and analyze the alternative interventions they perform based on their experiences in the preoperative period. DESIGN AND METHODS: Parents of 200 infants with CLP were asked to complete our questionnaire. The prenatal feeding preparations, preoperative processes, and feeding challenges and modifications to overcome these difficulties were evaluated. RESULTS: One-third of the caregivers stated that they had received feeding education prenatally. Sixty-fiv

Development and validation of multi-residue analysis for tetracycline antibiotics in feed by high performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry.

A new multi-residue method for the analysis of the tetracycline antibiotics oxytetracycline, tetracycline, chlortetracycline, and doxycycline was developed and validated for animal feed. After extraction with 0.1M Na2EDTA-McIlvaine buffer (pH 4), the samples were centrifuged, purified by SPE (Strata-X-CW cartridges) and analysed by HPLC-MS. Validation of the method was performed according to the guidelines indicated in European Commission Decision 2002/657/EC. The procedure was validated by spiking feed samples at three different levels (300, 1000, and 5000 µg/kg). Average recoveries for tetra

Osteopathic manipulative treatment for management of feeding dysfunction in breastfed newborns.

CONTEXT: The benefits of breastfeeding are well established, from reduced incidence of common childhood infections to decreased incidence of sudden infant death syndrome and infant mortality. Offering support to breastfeeding mothers should be a key aspect of care in the perinatal period. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether utilization of a standardized osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) protocol as an adjunct to lactation support improves feeding dysfunction in breastfed newborns. METHODS: This was a single-blinded, randomized, controlled, prospective pilot s

Extended kangaroo mother care - Examining the utility of skin-to-skin contact over the first year of life.

OBJECTIVES: Kangaroo mother care which involves skin-to-skin contact (SSC) between mothers and newborns with support for exclusive breastfeeding, is an important innovation if practiced beyond the first week of life up to 1-year of age. We posit that extended SSC can benefit postpartum metabolic health. STUDY DESIGN: Using a narrative literature review, we examine the interaction between hormones oxytocin and cortisol, which are either released or antagonized by the neural actions of skin-to-skin contact. RESULTS: Oxytocin is released during SSC, which promotes attachment, improves parent-in

Efficacy and Tolerability of Cyproheptadine in Poor Appetite: A Multicenter, Randomized, Double-blind, Placebo-controlled Study.

PURPOSE: Cyproheptadine, an antihistamine and antiserotonergic agent, is an appetite stimulant that is efficacious in promoting weight gain in children and adults with poor appetite. Despite numerous studies showing that cyproheptadine achieved positive outcomes, studies documenting its effectiveness on appetite are limited. This study evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of cyproheptadine in adults with poor appetite in South Korea. METHODS: Patients aged 19 to 64 years with poor appetite were randomly assigned to receive either cyproheptadine or placebo for 8 weeks. The primary end point

Effect of early kangaroo mother care on time to full feeds in preterm infants - A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is known to reduce neonatal mortality and morbidity. In preterm neonates, KMC is usually initiated only after stabilization. AIMS: We aimed to assess if early initiation of KMC starting within the first week of life is safe, and reduces the time to full feeds (TFF) in preterm neonates. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SUBJECTS: Preterm neonates (Gestation ≤ 34 weeks, Birth weight ≤ 1250 g). This was studied in two epochs, (epoch 1) which was before early KMC vs. epoch 2 which was after implementation of early KMC even if they needed respiratory

Enhancing Kangaroo Mother Care Uptake Through Implementation of an Education Protocol.

OBJECTIVES: Kangaroo mother care (KMC) uptake is low despite KMC being an evidence based tool to decrease neonatal mortality. It is important that local strategies be developed to enhance KMC usage. This study aimed to assess the effect of implementing an education protocol on the usage of KMC in the NICU and at home after discharge. METHODS: Preterm mother-infant dyads admitted to the NICU were enrolled prospectively. In initial 3 mo, baseline data on KMC usage in the unit and at home after discharge was collected. In the next three months, a KMC education protocol consisting of one-to-one c

Construction and validation of the mealtime and dysphagia questionnaire: an instrument designed to assess nursing staff reasons for noncompliance with SLP dysphagia and feeding recommendations.

The lack of compliance of nursing staff with SLP recommendations may be an important contribution to the swallowing and feeding problems of the elderly and the consequent elevated probability of aspiration pneumonia and other sequelae. There is a need to study the prevalence of noncompliance with SLP recommendations for swallowing and feeding and the reason for nursing staff noncompliance for dependent feeders. This researcher constructed and validated a 21-item instrument designed to assess the reasons for staff noncompliance with SLP recommendations using a sample of 180 nursing staffers in

Natural family planning indicators of ovulation.

Indirect evidence of the occurrence of ovulation, which is generally accepted, is an increase in plasma or serum progesterone. Pelvic ultrasonography can estimate the probable time of ovulation within 12 h. There is a close association between the rise in progesterone, luteinizing hormone (LH) and oestrogen peaks and ovulation. A WHO study reported that ovulation occurred at a median time of 8 h after the rise in plasma progesterone, 15 h after the LH peak and 24 h after the oestrogen peak. The basal body temperature (BBT) method is the most effective in determining the premenstrual infertile

Suppression of bulimic symptoms with methylamphetamine.

Eight patients with bulimia nervosa were given methylamphetamine or placebo intravenously under double blind controlled conditions. In every patient, methylamphetamine reduced self-ratings of hunger and amount of food eaten as measured under laboratory conditions. This shows that the food intake of patients with bulimia nervosa can be modified by experimental drugs. The symptom of bulimia (rapid, excessive and distressing eating) which may be followed by self-induced vomiting or purgation was seen in four patients after receiving placebo but in none after receiving methylamphetamine. These fin

Intrinsic Neurophysiological Factors Associated with the Attainment to Independent Oral Feeding in Preterm Infants.

AIM: Preterm infants often encounter difficulty with attaining independent oral feeding. There is limited evidence on which factors influence the achievement of independent oral feeding. This study aimed to examine the relation between intrinsic neurophysiological factors and the attainment of independent oral feeding. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted using data from a level II-III neonatal intensive care unit. The Oral Feeding in Preterm Infants Conceptual Model was used to identify intrinsic factors, including gestational age, sex, twin, respiratory support duration, intraventri

Very low birthweight infants receive less enteral feeding than what is prescribed.

AIM: Feeding a very low birthweight (VLBW, <1500 g) infant is challenging. Our aims were to study how prescribed enteral feeding is implemented in VLBW infants and to identify factors associating with slow enteral feeding progression. METHODS: Our retrospective cohort included 516 VLBW infants born before 32 weeks of gestation during 2005-2013 and admitted to Children's Hospital, Helsinki, Finland, for at least the two first weeks of life. Nutritional data were collected from birth until the age of 14-28 days, depending on the length of stay. RESULTS: We found that enteral feeding progressed

Complementary Feeding Indicators in Relation to Micronutrient Status of Ghanaian Children Aged 6-23 Months: Results from a National Survey.

BACKGROUND: Optimal complementary feeding is critical for adequate growth and development in infants and young children. The associations between complementary feeding and growth have been studied well, but less is known about the relationship between complementary feeding and micronutrient status. METHODS: Using data from a national cross-sectional survey conducted in Ghana in 2017, we examined how multiple WHO-recommended complementary feeding indicators relate to anemia and the micronutrient status of children aged 6-23 months. RESULTS: In total, 42%, 38%, and 14% of the children met the
