Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an autoimmune disease caused by an antidermal basal lamina antibody. In recent years double filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP) has been reported to be an effective therapy for BP. We experienced 3 cases of BP treated by DFPP. DFPP resulted in an improvement in clinical symptoms and remission allowing a decrease in the required dose of corticosteroid. DFPP was found to be an effective treatment for all 3 patients without noticeable adverse events resulting from DFPP. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and a dot immunoassay with culture-filtrated antigen were developed for detection of Burkholderia pseudomallei specific antibodies in melioidosis patients. Sixty-eight sera of bacteriologically confirmed melioidosis patients, 45 sera of other bacterial infected patients and 80 sera of healthy blood donors from endemic area were investigated. During the administration of Colibiogen, a commercially available E. coli-filtrate, there was a significant (P less than 0.01) increase of the test dose of UVA necessary to elicit skin lesions in nine patients with polymorphous light eruptions. Control tests performed in the same manner without the drug indicate that this was due to treatment. Colibiogen appears to be of value in the treatment of polymorphous light eruption (PLE).

Clinical effectiveness of granulocyte transfusions collected by filtration or by intermittent flow centrifugation was compared in this study. In 251 patients receiving at least four daily transfusions of these products, there was no difference in response rate (67% in each group) as determined by defervescence. The mechanisms of uptake of parathyroid hormone (PTH) by the kidney was studied in anesthetized dogs before and after ureteral ligation. During constant infusion of bovine PTH (b-PTH 1-84), the renal arteriovenous (A-V) difference for immunoreactive PTH (i-PTH) was 22+/-2%.
