Financial burden among liver transplant candidates is associated with financial distress and work impairment: A U.S. multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: The financial impact of chronic liver disease among adults undergoing liver transplant (LT) evaluation remains understudied. We performed a cross-sectional multicenter study to explore high financial burden, defined as medical out-of-pocket expenses ≥10% of income (per prior literature), among adult LT candidates. We aimed to identify associations between high financial burden and (1) work productivity impairment; (2) financial distress (material, behavioral, and psychological consequences of financial burden); (3) financial toxicity (health-related quality of life, HRQOL). METHOD

Childhood Stress, Loneliness, and Cardiovascular Diseases in Later Life: Does Family Support or Friend Support Matter?

This study investigates the associations between distinct childhood stressors (i.e., health threats, financial hardship, and interpersonal trauma) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in later life, with a focus on loneliness as a mediator and the moderating roles of family and friend support. Cross-sectional data were used in this study, including 5,007 Hong Kong residents aged 50 and above. CVD was assessed via self-reported diagnoses of heart diseases or stroke. All three childhood stressors were associated with increased CVD risk in old age, with loneliness significantly mediating these assoc

Predictors of distress and depression in elders with arthritic pain.

AIM: The aim of this paper is to report the findings of a study testing a theory of chronic pain, with financial hardship added as a contextual stimulus. BACKGROUND: Arthritis is highly prevalent among older people, resulting in severe pain and suffering. A previous study testing a theory of chronic pain in elders with arthritis found that pain, disability and social support explained only 35% of the variance in their emotional distress. It is possible that demands, other than chronic pain, such as financial hardship, also contribute to these elders' stress and depression. METHOD: The theory

MSKI reduction strategies: evidence-based interventions to reduce musculoskeletal injuries in military service members.

Musculoskeletal injuries (MSKI) are one of the biggest challenges for military services globally, contributing to substantial financial burdens and lost training and working days. Effective evidence-based intervention strategies are essential to reduce MSKI incidence, and research has shown the positive effect of both nutritional interventions and physical training (PT) interventions on reducing MSKI incidence. Levels of vitamin D metabolites have been associated with MSKI and bone stress fracture risk, while calcium and vitamin D supplementation has been shown to reduce the incidence of stres
