PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review current literature on the management of genitourinary fistulae, specifically, the techniques for diagnosis, timing to repair, surgical approach and recent advancements in surgical technique.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent advancement in minimally invasive surgery has prompted surgeons to perform fistula repairs with laparoscopic or robotic-assisted laparoscopic techniques. Whereas there is a role for transabdominal fistula closure, the majority of fistulae are still best approached via a transvaginal route.

OBJECTIVE: Describe the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of vesicovaginal fistula (VVF).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective descriptive study of all cases of VVF secondary to hysterectomy. The following parameters were studied: age, parity, indication for hysterectomy, risk factors, the consultation period, the anatomical type of VVF, the paraclinical, the surgical approach and results of the cure.

Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) has been a social and a surgical problem for centuries and remains a challenge to surgeons. Though advances have been made in the understanding of the etiology, diagnostic procedures and management of these fistulae, controversies still exist over the ideal approach and time to repair. This review was undertaken to look into the recent literature with regard to the timing and surgical approach to VVF repair. The literature search was done using the Medline database with keywords: vesicovaginal fistula, laparoscopy and robotic repair filtered for the last 5 years.

Genital fistulas cause immense physical and psychosocial problem in women's life. The present study was conducted to note the varieties of genital fistula as well as their causative factors and the results of the operative corrections. Altogether 42 patients with different varieties of genital fistula were enrolled in the study. We report a case of a vesicouterine fistula occurring after a Caesarean section. There was a noticeable delay in recognizing the fistula, which was, however, clearly visible on a vaginal ultrasound scanning. When urinary incontinence is developed after gynaecologic or obstetric surgery, a fistula must be suspected.

A 27-year-old woman developed recurrent hydatid of liver. CT scan showed unilocular cysts in segments IV and VII. Intraoperatively, there was a fistulous communication between the gall bladder and the cyst in segment IV. Partial pericystectomy along with cholecystectomy was done for the segment IV cyst; percutaneous aspiration, instillation and re-aspiration using hypertonic saline was done for the cyst in segment VII.
