Cerebellar rTMS disrupts predictive language processing.

The human cerebellum plays an important role in language, amongst other cognitive and motor functions , but a unifying theoretical framework about cerebellar language function is lacking. In an established model of motor control, the cerebellum is seen as a predictive machine, making short-term estimations about the outcome of motor commands. This allows for flexible control, on-line correction, and coordination of movements . The homogeneous cytoarchitecture of the cerebellar cortex suggests that similar computations occur throughout the structure, operating on different input signals and wit

Visual signs and symptoms of progressive supranuclear palsy.

Progressive supranuclear palsy is a rare, degenerative brain disorder and the second most common syndrome in which the patient exhibits 'parkinsonism', that is, a variety of symptoms involving problems with movement. General symptoms include difficulties with gait and balance; the patient walking clumsily and often falling backwards. The syndrome can be difficult to diagnose and visual signs and symptoms can help to separate it from closely related movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy, dementia with Lewy bodies and corticobasal degeneration. A combination of

Variability of eye movements when viewing dynamic natural scenes.

How similar are the eye movement patterns of different subjects when free viewing dynamic natural scenes? We collected a large database of eye movements from 54 subjects on 18 high-resolution videos of outdoor scenes and measured their variability using the Normalized Scanpath Saliency, which we extended to the temporal domain. Even though up to about 80% of subjects looked at the same image region in some video parts, variability usually was much greater. Eye movements on natural movies were then compared with eye movements in several control conditions. "Stop-motion" movies had almost identi

Fixation topography in normal test persons.

BACKGROUND: The eye is moved so that the object of interest falls on the central fovea, where the spatial resolution is highest. In the present study we quantified eye movements of normal test persons during steady fixation and characterized the fixation using a 3D fixation plot (X horizontal eye position, Y vertical eye position, Z time in each eye position). METHOD: Fixation eye movements were quantified binocularly in ten normal test persons during a 40-s fixation task using an infrared recording technique. RESULTS: The fixation plot was characterized by a single preferred fixation locus

The extra-retinal motion aftereffect.

Repetitive eye movements are known to produce motion aftereffect (MAE) when made to track a moving stimulus. Explanations typically centre on the retinal motion created in the peripheral visual field by the eye movement. This retinal motion is thought to induce perceived motion in the central test, either through the interaction between peripheral MAE and central target or by adaptation of mechanisms sensitive to the relative motion created between centre and surround. Less attention has been paid to possible extra-retinal contributions to MAE following eye movement. Prolonged eye movement lea

Frequency and consistency effects in a pure surface dyslexic patient.

Data are presented from a neurological patient (M.P.) with an acquired deficit for naming words with atypical spelling-sound correspondences. In Experiment 1, the degree of consistency within neighborhoods of orthographically similar words had a parallel impact on M.P.'s pronunciations of regular and irregular words and nonwords. This result is more compatible with models in which the same basic procedure, sensitive in a graded fashion to both frequency and consistency, computes pronunciations for all types of letter strings than it is with models postulating separate lexical and nonlexical me

[Disparity of fixation in asthenopic syndrome].

This study provides the first description of a test of fixation disparity that can be used in daily clinical practice. Exploration of this problem lays a basis for understanding, and allows rational prescription of the use of small prisms for the treatment of asthenopia associated with horizontal heterophoria. The fixation disparity is opposite to the heterophoria in almost 30% of cases. The test has a specificity of 71,5% for a study population of 55 patients. When the disparity test was abnormal, use of this examination demonstrated that the prescription of an adapted prism was effective in

Retinal fixation behavior in human albinos.

The retinal fixation behavior of 17 albinos was examined whilst they fixated a stationary target. An optical system was arranged so that the motion of the target on the retina, due to the nystagmus, could be video-recorded. Eye movements were monitored simultaneously. Eight of the 17 subjects were judged to use consistently a retinal location compatible with the anatomical position of the fovea. The implications of this for subjects with foveal hypoplasia are discussed.

Investigation of the visual cytoscreening of conventional gynecologic smears. II. Analysis of eye movement.

The perception of visual information in cytoscreening was studied: eye movements were recorded while the cytotechnologist was screening cervical smears by means of a projection screen. Four phases of eye movement could be distinguished: small, aimless movements during the stage movement; a latency period with a duration of about 180 milliseconds; saccadic movement to the position of an object; and fixation on an object. These components explain the two-phase behavior of cytoscreening found in our previous investigations of the stage movement. Visual perception during the period of latency was

Monocular spatial distortion in strabismic amblyopia.

We examined monocular spatial vision of strabismic amblyopes by measuring errors of relative directionalization (specifying whether or not two targets are in vertical alignment) and partitioning (equating left- and right-field spaces). Abnormally large errors were made when fixation occurred with the amblyopic eye; these errors did not attributable to reduced acuity, unsteady fixation, or eccentric fixation. From the results we infer that monocular space perception of strabismic amblyopic eyes is severely distorted and is characterized by "bending" of vertical lines of direction and by local "

[Internuclear ophthalmoplegia in infectious encephalitis: observation on a case of listeriosis].

An internuclear ophthalmoplegia was diagnosed and recorded electro-oculographically in a patient with pontomedullary listeriosis. The etiological differential diagnosis in case of internuclear ophthalmoplegia is discussed. It is emphasized that listeria monocytogenes encephalitis should be considered because this pathology may be electively located in the pontomedullary area and because of the encreasing frequency of human listeriosis.

[Experiences in the measurements of correspondence using dark red glass and according to image after Cüppers (author's transl)].

The measurement of correspondence using a dark red glass in front of the fixating eye and a foveal after image in the deviating eye according to Cüppers is really an efficient clinical method. In spite of the fact that we are dealing with a dissociating test this method offers these advantages: 1. The objective angle is well known at any time. 2. This method allows a sufficient discrimination in the range of 15 min. of arc. 3. There is a permanent retinal stimulation contrary to the method utilizing after-flash images.--General objections to dissociating tests, for example that given by Goldma

Keep Your Eye on the Ball; the Impact of an Anticipatory Fixation During Successful and Unsuccessful Soccer Penalty Kicks.

The success of a sporting task requiring an object to be kicked or hit toward a target (e.g., kicking a ball into a goal) is impacted by the length of the Quiet Eye (QE). Limitations in the ocular motor system mean that after impact, these fast moving objects are not tracked using smooth pursuit eye movements. Rather, anticipatory fixations are used to re-fixate ahead of the moving object.Using a soccer penalty kick, the current study investigated whether striking a stationary object to generate high ball velocity results in an anticipatory fixation prior to ball contact and if this occurs at

Fixation duress in the pathogenesis of upper eyelid retraction in thyroid orbitopathy. A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Upper eyelid retraction in thyroid eye disease may be caused by proptosis, levator and Müller's muscle infiltration with fibrosis or individual fiber enlargement, excessive sympathetic innervation, abnormal adhesions between levator palpebrae muscle and surrounding tissues, or fixation duress. Fixation duress refers to upper eyelid retraction while fixating with an eye with inferior rectus muscle restriction due to excessive simultaneous firing of the ipsilateral superior rectus and levator palpebrae muscles. METHODS: The authors prospectively examined six patients with strabismus

Transconjunctival approach for involutional entropion: Impact on the ocular surface.

Involutional lower eyelid entropion is a common age-related eyelid malposition associated with ocular surface irritation. Surgical correction has typically focused upon anatomical alignment, whereas functional recovery of the ocular surface has been reported less frequently. This retrospective study included 24 patients (24 eyelids) who underwent a modified transconjunctival procedure. The technique involved excision of the palpebral conjunctiva and lower eyelid retractor, followed by fixation to the inferior tarsal border with a buried running suture. Ocular surface parameters-conjunctivochal

Hyperactive Otolith-Ocular Reflex During Heat Tilt (Rabbit's Eye Sign) In Anti-Ma2 Rhombencephalitis.

Otolith-ocular reflex (OOR) (contralateral ocular torsion [ocular counter-roll, OCR] and skew deviation [upward deviation of the lowermost eye and/or downward deviation of the uppermost eye]), helps to maintain eye position and stabilize fixation in response to head and/or body tilt in the roll plane. While prominent in lateral-eyed animals, OOR is vestigial in humans, indicating the frontal-eyed system has evolved to inhibit this reflex. We show that OOR can be released under pathological conditions. We describe a patient with anti-Ma2-associated rhombencephalitis manifesting with hyperactive

Eye movements and ocular biomarkers in mild traumatic brain injury: from oculomotor pathophysiology to diagnosis and prognosis.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is among the most common neurological presentations worldwide, yet its diagnosis remains largely clinical and its prognosis difficult to predict. Structural imaging is typically normal and self-reported symptom scales are insensitive and confounded by effort and comorbidity. Because the generation and control of eye movements recruit an unusually large and anatomically distributed proportion of the brain-from brainstem and cerebellar circuits to parietal, frontal and prefrontal cortices linked by long white-matter tracts-ocular-motor behaviour is sensitive to

Gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy (GATT) with scleral or iris fixation for subluxated intraocular lenses and glaucoma.

INTRODUCTION: This retrospective chart review aims to report a combined surgical approach of intraocular lens (IOL) fixation and gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy (GATT) for the treatment of subluxated IOLs and glaucoma or ocular hypertension. METHODS: Charts of patients who underwent IOL fixation combined with GATT between November 2019 and July 2023 were reviewed. The main outcome measure was surgical success, defined as a well-centered IOL and an IOP of 18 mmHg or lower and either a 30% IOP reduction or a reduction in medications as compared to baseline. Complications and the

Fixation control and eye alignment in children treated for dense congenital or developmental cataracts.

BACKGROUND: Many children treated for cataracts develop strabismus and nystagmus; however, little is known about the critical period for adverse ocular motor outcomes with respect to age of onset and duration. METHODS: Children who had undergone extraction of dense cataracts by the age of 5 years were enrolled postoperatively. Ocular alignment was assessed regularly throughout follow-up. Fixation stability and associated ocular oscillations were determined from eye movement recordings at ≥5 years old. Multivariate logistic regression was used to evaluate whether laterality (unilateral vs bila
