Declines in large wildlife increase landscape-level prevalence of rodent-borne disease in Africa.

Populations of large wildlife are declining on local and global scales. The impacts of this pulse of size-selective defaunation include cascading changes to smaller animals, particularly rodents, and alteration of many ecosystem processes and services, potentially involving changes to prevalence and transmission of zoonotic disease. Understanding linkages between biodiversity loss and zoonotic disease is important for both public health and nature conservation programs, and has been a source of much recent scientific debate. In the case of rodent-borne zoonoses, there is strong conceptual supp

[Occurrence and distribution of ectoparasites in guinea pigs (Cavia spp.) in Peru, South America].

Studies on the prevalence and distribution of ectoparasites in Peru were carried out during a period of 2 1/2 years. The survey included 17,421 domesticated guinea pigs (Cavia aperea f. porcellus) from 14 departments in all bioregions and altitude levels and 143 wild guinea pigs (Cavia aperea) from three areas (El Paramo, Junin and La Raya) in the Andes and the Cordillera. The guinea pig is an important source of food, especially for the rural population, the infestation with ectoparasites, such as fleas, lice or mites greatly contributes to a decrease in production and low performance. Effects of pyriproxyfen spray, powder, and oral bait treatments on the relative abundance of fleas (Siphonaptera: Ceratophyllidae) in black-tailed prairie dog (Rodentia: Sciuridae) towns.

Separate black-tailed prairie dog, Cynomys ludovicianus (Ord), towns on the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, Colorado, were treated with technical pyriproxyfen (Nylar) using spray, powder, and oral bait carriers. Direct combing methods (1997 and 1998) and burrow flagging (1998) were used to estimate relative abundance of the plague vector Oropsylla hirsuta (Baker). Pyriproxyfen spray (0.05%) and powder (0.05%) did not significantly reduce (P > 0.05) O. hirsuta abundance. Pyriproxyfen bait, when applied every 4 wk at a concentration of 286 mg/50 g bait, significantly reduced (P

[Farm animals as disease vectors of parasitic epizoonoses and zoophilic dermatophytes and their importance in dermatology].

Different pest arthropods and dermatophytes occurring primarily in farm animals may be transmissible to man and produce human dermatoses. The movement and cutaneous penetration habits of external parasites often cause crusted papules, severe itching and dermatitis or may damage their hosts by blood-sucking or by sensitizing them to their saliva. Furthermore different dermatophytes should be considered a possible cause of human skin lesions. Farm animals (cattle, pig, poultry, and rabbit) can transmit external parasites (ticks: Ixodes ricinus, Argas reflexus; fleas: Ceratophyllus gallinae, Spil

Tunga penetrans causing a rapidly progressing foot ulcer in a patient with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Tungiasis is a parasitic disease resulting from infestation by a female flea Tunga penetrans. The parasites are endemic in the tropics and can infect patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Augmented by uncontrolled hyperglycemia and pre-existing neuropathy, the parasite may trigger a locally spreading inflammation, which may aggravate the trauma introduced during its extraction, leading into a rapidly progressing foot ulcer. To the best of our knowledge, no such cases in patients with type 2 diabetes have ever been published from Tanzania and likely none worldwide. This case report shows that,

[Cockroaches and co. The role of health pests as allergen source].

In most of the cases health pests are carriers of pathogens or parasites which have a negative impact on human health or affect the health of other mammals. What is lesser known is that they can also act as allergens. Most of the health pests in this sense belong to the arthropods, such as cockroaches (Blattaria), mosquitos (Culiciformia), lice (Pediculus humanus corporis), fleas (Siphonaptera) and ticks (Argasidae). In the group of vertebrates rats (Rattus norvegicus and Rattus rattus), house mice (Mus musculus) and pigeons (Columba livia domestica) are also classified as health pests. Also s

A mathematical epidemiological model of gram-negative Bartonella bacteria: does differential ectoparasite load fully explain the differences in infection prevalence of Rattus rattus and Rattus norvegicus?

We postulate that the large difference in infection prevalence, 24% versus 5%, in R. norvegicus and R. rattus, respectively, between these two co-occurring host species may be due to differences in ectoparasite and potential vector infestation rates. A compartmental model, representative of an infectious system containing these two Rattus species and two ectoparasite vectors, was constructed and the coefficients of the forces of infection determined mathematically. The maximum difference obtained by the model in the prevalence of Bartonella in the two Rattus species amounts to 4.6%, compared t

[Host influence on the frequency of block formation in males and females of Citellophilus tesquorum altaicus Ioff, 1936 (Siphonaptera: Ceratophyllidae) and transmission the plague pathogen by these fleas].

Data obtained during feeding of Citellophilus tesquorum aitaicus Ioff, 1936 infested females and males (Siphonaptera: Ceratophyllidae), the main vectors of plague in Tuva natural plague locus, on the natural host and laboratory animal was analyzed. It was found that sexual differences in fleas depended on the type of the host. Females fed more actively on the longtailed ground Citellus undulatus than on white mouse. Alimentary activity of males on these animals was similar. Higher mortality of fed females and males was noted during feeding on mice. Frequency of formation of the "block" and tra

Arthropod-borne diseases associated with political and social disorder.

The living conditions and the crowded situations of the homeless, war refugees, or victims of a natural disaster provide ideal conditions for the spread of lice, fleas, ticks, flies and mites. The consequence of arthropod infestation in these situations is underestimated. Along with louse-borne infections such as typhus, trench fever, and relapsing fever, the relationship between Acinetobacter spp.-infected lice and bacteremia in the homeless is not clear. Murine typhus, tungiasis, and myiasis are likely underestimated, and there has been a reemergence of bed bugs. Attempted eradication of the

Ectoparasites of Chevrier's field mouse, Apodemus chevrieri, in a focus of plague in southwest China.

Chevrier's field mouse, Apodemus chevrieri Milne-Edwards (Rodentia: Muridae), has been identified as the main wild reservoir of plague in the sylvatic plague focus of Yunnan Province, southwest China. Here, the ectoparasite communities of A. chevrieri and the potential medical and veterinary importance of these ectoparasites are described. A high proportion (66%) of 321 mice were found to be infested with ectoparasites. A total of 81 species of ectoparasite, including 48 species of chigger mite, 25 species of mesostigmatid (gamasid) mite, six species of flea and two species of sucking louse we

Ectoparasites of dogs belonging to people in resource-poor communities in North West Province, South Africa.

A total of 344 dogs belonging to people in resource-poor communities in North West Province, South Africa, was examined for ectoparasites, and all visible arthropods were collected from the left side of each dog. By doubling these numbers it was estimated that the dogs harboured 14,724 ixodid ticks, belonging to 6 species, 1,028 fleas, belonging to 2 species, and 26 lice. Haemaphysalis leachi accounted for 420 and Rhipicephalus sanguineus for 14,226 of the ticks. Pure infestations of H. leachi were present on 14 dogs and of R. sanguineus on 172 dogs. Immunogenetics, sylvatic plague and its vectors: insights from the pathogen reservoir Mastomys natalensis in Tanzania.

Yersinia pestis is a historically important vector-borne pathogen causing plague in humans and other mammals. Contemporary zoonotic infections with Y. pestis still occur in sub-Saharan Africa, including Tanzania and Madagascar, but receive relatively little attention. Thus, the role of wildlife reservoirs in maintaining sylvatic plague and spillover risks to humans is largely unknown. The multimammate rodent Mastomys natalensis is the most abundant and widespread rodent in peri-domestic areas in Tanzania, where it plays a major role as a Y. pestis reservoir in endemic foci. Yet, how M. natalen

[Species composition, abundance, and annual cycles of fleas (Siphonaptera) on bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) in the western part of Vologda Province (Babaevo district)].

A total of 383 fleas of 11 species were collected from 428 bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) near Babaevo Vill. (59 degrees 4', N, 35 degrees 8' E). Three species (Amphipsylla rossica, Doratopsylla dasycnema, Palaeopsylla soricis) are not typical for these rodent hosts, moving onto the latter occasionally from other animals, such as the common vole Microtus arvalis and shrews inhabiting adjacent or similar biotopes. Peromyscopsylla bidentata, infesting the bank vole in the most part of its range, was recorded only as a single female. Megabothris turbidus was also very rare, being sporadical

Biocontrol potential of native entomopathogenic fungi against Phyllotreta spp. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) on radish: a study of damage suppression and population dynamics.

Flea beetles (Phyllotreta spp.) have recently emerged as important pests of cruciferous crops in India. However, their incidence and management in Tamil Nadu, India remain poorly documented. This study was undertaken to assess the damage potential and explore sustainable management options in radish (Raphanus sativus), a highly susceptible, short-duration crop that experiences both foliar and root damage, often leading to increased pesticide use and residue concerns. Field surveys conducted across major radish-growing regions of Tamil Nadu revealed the occurrence of Phyllotreta striolata and P

Parasites of domestic owned cats in Europe: co-infestations and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Domestic cats can be infested by a large range of parasite species. Parasitic infestations may cause very different clinical signs. Endoparasites and ectoparasites are rarely explored in the same study and therefore multiparasitism is poorly documented. The present survey aimed to improve knowledge of the prevalence and risk factors associated with ecto- and endoparasite infestations in owned cats in Europe. METHODS: From March 2012 to May 2013, 1519 owned cats were included in a multicenter study conducted in 9 veterinary faculties throughout Europe (Austria, Belgium, France, Hun

World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (W.A.A.V.P.) guidelines for studies evaluating the efficacy of parasiticides in reducing the risk of vector-borne pathogen transmission in dogs and cats.

These guidelines are intended to provide an in-depth review of current knowledge and assist the planning and implementation of studies for evaluating the efficacy of parasiticides in reducing transmission of vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) to dogs and cats. At present, the prevention of VBP transmission in companion animals is generally achieved through the administration of products that can repel or rapidly kill arthropods, thus preventing or interrupting feeding before transmission occurs. The present guidelines complement existing guidelines, which focus on efficacy assessment of parasiticid
