Flooding and elevated prenatal depression in a climate-sensitive community in rural Bangladesh: a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal depression can have lasting adverse impacts on child health. Little is known about the impact of floods on prenatal depression in low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 881 pregnant women from September 24, 2023 to July 19, 2024 in riverine communities in rural Bangladesh. We recorded participant-reported flooding in the past 6 months, administered the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), and obtained water level data and remote sensing data on distance to surface water. We fit generalized linear and log-linear models a…

Community-based flood mitigation in Malaysia: Enhancing public participation and policy effectiveness for sustainable resilience.

BACKGROUND: Flooding is a frequent and devastating hazard in Malaysia, exacerbated by the country's tropical climate and rapid urbanisation. Traditional flood management strategies, predominantly focused on engineering solutions, have proven inadequate in addressing evolving flood risks. Community-based flood mitigation (CBFM) has emerged as an alternative approach, leveraging local knowledge and public participation to enhance flood resilience. This study aims to evaluate the role of CBFM in Malaysia, focusing on the effectiveness of public involvement and policy implementation in flood risk

Agro-technologies for greenhouse gases mitigation in flooded rice fields for promoting climate smart agriculture.

We investigated methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), two important greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions using the closed chamber method from a flooded rice field in Brahmaputra valley of Assam, northeast part of India. We tried to understand the factors responsible for the emission and identify appropriate agro-technologies for their mitigation. Various factors like water level, drainage management, soil organic carbon management, crop management, fertilizer amendment, cultivar type etc. affect the GHG production and emission from the flooded rice soil. In this study, six treatments were employ

Simultaneously decreasing arsenic and cadmium in rice by soil sulfate and limestone amendment under intermittent flooding.

Water management in paddy soils can effectively reduce the soil-to-rice grain transfer of either As or Cd, but not of both elements simultaneously due to the higher mobility of As under reducing and Cd under oxidizing soil conditions. Limestone amendment, the common form of liming, is well known for decreasing Cd accumulation in rice grown on acidic soils. Sulfate amendment was suggested to effectively decrease As accumulation in rice, especially under intermittent soil flooding. To study the unknown effects of combined sulfate and limestone amendment under intermittent flooding for simultaneo

Combustion-Derived Pollutants Linked with Kidney Disease in Low-Lying Flood-Affected Areas in the Balkans.

Tens of thousands of people in southern Europe suffer from Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN), and four times as many are at risk. Incidental ingestion of aristolochic acids (AAs), stemming from the ubiquitousAristolochia clematitis(birthwort) weed in the region, leads to DNA adduct-induced toxicity in kidney cells, the primary cause of BEN. Numerous cofactors, including toxic organics and metals, have been investigated, but all have shown small contributions to the overall BEN relative to non-BEN village distribution gradients. Here, we reveal that combustion-derived pollutants from wood and co

Latent sub-structural resilience mechanisms in temporal human mobility networks during urban flooding.

In studying resilience in temporal human networks, relying solely on global network measures would be inadequate; latent sub-structural network mechanisms need to be examined to determine the extent of impact and recovery of these networks during perturbations, such as urban flooding. In this study, we utilize high-resolution aggregated location-based data to construct temporal human mobility networks in Houston in the context of the 2017 Hurricane Harvey. We examine motif distribution, motif persistence, temporal stability, and motif attributes to reveal latent sub-structural mechanisms relat

Urban flood numerical modeling and hydraulic performance of a drainage network: A case study in Algiers, Algeria.

Urban sewer system management is challenging due to its higher vulnerability to flooding caused by rapid urbanization and climate change. For local decision-makers, storm water management is essential for urban planning and development. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to develop a numerical model for the sewerage network of the central catchment area of Algiers since it has experienced frequent overflows during the winter season. For this purpose, to model the sewerage networks, the model was built by coupling ArcGIS with MIKE URBAN. Its calibration and validation were performed

A framework for coastal flood hazard assessment under sea level rise: Application to the Persian Gulf.

Coastal areas are of paramount importance due to their pivotal role in facilitating a wide range of socio-economic activities and providing vital environmental services. These areas, as the meeting points of land and sea, face significant risks of flooding due to the ongoing rise in sea levels caused by climate change. Additionally, they are susceptible to extreme events like king tides and large waves in the future. This paper introduces a framework for estimating the extreme total water level (TWL) by considering the effects of regional sea level rise (RSLR) resulting from a warming climate

Flow-tub model: A modified bathtub flood model with hydraulic connectivity and path-based attenuation.

Global climate change and sea level rise are increasing the risks of flooding for coastal communities. Probabilistic coastal flood risk analysis at regional or global scales requires flood models with relatively low data requirements and low computational costs. Bathtub inundation models, which compute flood depth as the difference between water level and ground elevation, are well-suited for large-scale flood risk analysis. However, these models may overestimate floods because they do not capture some of the relevant underlying hydrodynamic processes that govern flood propagation on land. We …

Alum reduced phosphorus release from flooded soils under cold spring weather conditions.

The effectiveness of amendments such as alum [Al2 (SO4 )3 ·18H2 O] in reducing phosphorus (P) loss to floodwater has been reported under summer conditions and laboratory-controlled environments, but not under actual spring weather conditions in cold climate regions with high diurnal temperature variations when potential for P losses is high. The effectiveness of alum in reducing P release under Manitoba spring weather conditions was evaluated in a 42-day experiment using 15-cm soil monoliths from eight agricultural soils, which were unamended or alum-amended (5 Mg ha-1 ) and flooded to a 10-cm

Wave induced coastal flooding along the southwest coast of India during tropical cyclone Tauktae.

The coastal flood during the tropical cyclone Tauktae, 2021, at Chellanam coast, Kerala, India, has invited wide attention as the wave overtopping severely affected coastal properties and livelihood. We used a combination of WAVEWATCHIII and XBeach to study the coastal inundation during high waves. The effect of low-frequency waves and the rise in the coastal water level due to wave setup caused the inundation at Chellanam, even during low tide with negligible surge height. Wave setup raised the water level at the coast with steep slopes to more than 0.6 m and peaked during low tide, facilitat

Exploring spatial heterogeneity and environmental injustices in exposure to flood hazards using geographically weighted regression.

This study explores flood-related environmental injustices by deconstructing racial, ethnic, and socio-demographic disparities and spatial heterogeneity in the areal extent of fluvial, pluvial, and coastal flooding across Canada. The study integrates JBA Risk Management's 100-year Canada Flood Map with the 2016 national census-based socioeconomic data to investigate whether traditionally recognized vulnerable groups and communities are exposed inequitably to inland (e.g., fluvial and pluvial) and coastal flood hazards. Social vulnerability was represented by neighbourhood-level socioeconomic d

Role of the rhizosphere of a flooding-tolerant herb in promoting mercury methylation in water-level fluctuation zones.

The water-level fluctuation zone (WLFZ) has been considered as a hotspot for mercury (Hg) methylation. Flooding-tolerant herbs are gradually acclimated to this water-land ecotone, tending to form substantial root systems for improving erosion resistance. Accompanying rhizosphere microzone plays crucial but unclear roles in methylmercury (MeHg) formation in the WLFZ. Thus, we conducted this study in the WLFZ of the Three Gorges Reservoir, to explore effects of the rhizosphere of a dominant flooding-tolerant herb (bermudagrass) on MeHg production. The elevated Hg and MeHg in rhizosphere soils su

Flooding and ecological restoration promote wetland microbial communities and soil functions on former cranberry farmland.

Microbial communities are early responders to wetland degradation, and instrumental players in the reversal of this degradation. However, our understanding of soil microbial community structure and function throughout wetland development remains incomplete. We conducted a survey across cranberry farms, young retired farms, old retired farms, flooded former farms, ecologically restored former farms, and natural reference wetlands with no history of cranberry farming. We investigated the relationship between the microbial community and soil characteristics that restoration intends to maximize, s

Acute Abdomen From Umbilical Hernia Rupture to Flood Syndrome: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Flood syndrome is caused by spontaneous rupture of an umbilical hernia in a patient with tense, long-standing ascites. It is a rare complication of hepatic cirrhosis and has a high mortality rate. Flood syndrome is so named because a rush of ascitic fluid often follows the spontaneous umbilical hernia rupture. We present a case of a 39-year-old male patient with a history of alcoholic liver cirrhosis and recurrent ascites who underwent multiple abdominal paracentesis prior to developing an umbilical hernia that eventually ruptured, causing flood syndrome. The authors would like to discuss floo
