Hematology and Biochemistry Reference Intervals for American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) in South Florida, USA.

We calculated reference intervals for 48 blood parameters from 120 wild American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) in South Florida, US. Although previously reported by others, this study includes additional parameters not yet reported in wild populations. Most previously reported blood parameter values were similar to ours and fell within our reference intervals.

Notoedric mange (Notoedres centrifera) in two species of free-ranging rabbits from Florida, USA.

Mange is a contagious skin disease caused by different mite species affecting numerous domestic and wild animals, worldwide. This report details notoedric mange in an eastern cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus) and in a marsh rabbit (Sylvilagus palustris) from Florida, USA. Clinical examination revealed similar gross lesions including poor nutritional condition, multifocal alopecia and hyperkeratosis. Skin scrapings from both rabbits revealed numerous subcutaneous mites identified as Notoedres centrifera, a species previously only associated with rodents, primarily squirrels. Mites from both ra…

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) seroprevalence, RNA detection, and genotype distribution across Florida, 2015-2018.

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a leading cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the U.S. Due to high rates of HCV among baby boomers (born 1945-1965), it was recommended they receive universal screening. This was expanded to all U.S. adults in 2020 due to evidence of increasing rates of chronic HCV in younger adults. An assessment of HCV burden across demographics is crucial to understand the future burden of HCC and target under-screened adults for HCV. Using the OneFlorida Clinical Research Consortium, of more than one million individuals in Florida, all HCV antibody and vi…

Application of machine learning algorithms for localized syringe services program policy implementation - Florida, 2017.

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs (PWID) are at an amplified vulnerability for experiencing a multitude of harms related to their substance use, including viral (e.g. HIV, Hepatitis C) and bacterial infections (e.g. endocarditis). Implementation of evidence-based interventions, such as syringe services programs (SSPs), remains imperative, particularly in locations at an increased risk of HIV outbreaks. This study aims to identify communities in Florida that are high-priority locations for SSP implementation by examining state-level data related to the substance use and overdose crises. METH…

Incarceration History and HIV Care Among Individuals Living with HIV in Florida, 2014-2018.

The present study examines the HIV continuum of care outcomes among people living with HIV (PLWH) who have either recent (< 12-months) or distal (> 12-months) incarceration history compared to those without an incarceration history. A self-administered survey (as part of the Florida Cohort Study (n = 932)) was used to collect data on demographic information, linkage to care, retention in care, HIV medication adherence, viral suppression, and incarceration history. Those with recent incarceration history were least likely to report HIV medication adherence greater than or equal to 95% of the ti…

[Operation in DeBakey type I acute aortic dissection according to the Florida Sleeve technique].

Despite the fact that recent decades have witnessed significant advances in treatment of patients with DeBakey type I acute aortic dissection, it still remains difficult to restore the aortic root when the dissection extends to the Valsalva's sinuses. Thinned aortic walls are vulnerable to traumatization on applying a vascular suture. We used in patients with this pathology the Florida sleeve technique in order to reinforce the weakened aortic root. After mobilization of the aortic root and coronary arteries, the transplant 'wraps' the sinuses from the outside, like the neoadventitia, in order…

T-cell Thymic Lymphoma With Proventricular Metastasis in a Florida Scrub Jay ( Aphelocoma coerulescens).

An adult, wild-caught, female Florida scrub jay ( Aphelocoma coerulescens) was evaluated because of an observable mass on the ventral neck. Initial physical examination and diagnostic tests were performed, which revealed a subcutaneous mass. Surgical removal of the mass was attempted, but the bird died during surgery. Results of necropsy and histopathologic evaluation identified the mass as thymic lymphoma with proventricular metastasis. Immunohistochemical staining revealed strong cytoplasmic immunoreactivity for CD3 in the thymic mass and within the predominant lymphoid population in the ser…

Skeletal Indicators of Shark Feeding on Human Remains: Evidence from Florida Forensic Anthropology Cases.

This research examines a series of six Florida forensic anthropology cases that exhibit taphonomic evidence of marine deposition and shark-feeding activities. In each case, we analyzed patterns of trauma/damage on the skeletal remains (e.g., sharp-force bone gouges and punctures) and possible mechanisms by which they were inflicted during shark predation/scavenging. In some cases, shark teeth were embedded in the remains; in the absence of this evidence, we measured interdental distance from defects in the bone to estimate shark body length, as well as to draw inferences about the potential sp…

Host use and seasonality of Culex (Melanoconion) iolambdis (Diptera: Culicidae) from eastern Florida, USA.

Culex (Melanoconion) iolambdis (Dyar, 1918) is a mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) species found throughout much of tropical America, including southern Florida. Relatively few reports are available regarding the ecology of Cx. iolambdis, despite its widespread distribution and putative involvement in transmission of Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus. To quantify habitat and host utilization, adults of Cx. iolambdis were sampled from resting shelters at a field site in Vero Beach, Florida, over a 12-month period. Culex iolambdis (1109 males, 3072 females) constituted more than half (56.76%) of …

Prevalence of Ancylostoma braziliense in dogs from Alachua and Marion Counties, Florida, United States.

A convenience collection of fecal samples from 148 dogs in northern Florida was examined for the presence of Ancylostoma braziliense eggs by using centrifugal sugar flotation and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). Of the 148 samples, 64 (43.2%) contained hookworm eggs. DNA from 42 samples was successfully amplified using PCR; using RFLP, 2 samples were identified as containing DNA of A. braziliense (4.8% of the 42 successfully amplified samples).

Prevalence and pathology of lungworm infection in bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus from southwest Florida.

Parasitism of the respiratory system is a relatively common finding in stranded cetaceans; however, no systematic investigations regarding the severity, distribution, and clinical consequences of these infections in bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus have been conducted previously. The present study determined the prevalence of lungworm infections in dead stranded (n=22) and live bottlenose dolphins (n=44) from southwestern Florida, USA, during the period from 2003 to 2005. Dead stranded bottlenose dolphins were necropsied and lungs were examined visually, by palpation, and histologically …

Population ecology and phenology of Diaphorina citri (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) in two Florida citrus groves.

Studies were conducted to assess population densities and phenology of the psyllid Diaphorina citri Kuwayama at two citrus groves in east-central Florida. One grove contained young, irrigated grapefruit trees and the other contained mature, nonirrigated orange trees. The two groves were sampled weekly for eggs, nymphs, and adults on flush shoots; for adults on mature leaves; and for adults captured on yellow sticky card traps. Because infestations of immature D. citri develop strictly on young flush, the abundance of flush was assessed weekly. Overall means of 26.5, 16.8, and 0.27 eggs, nymphs…

Laboratory findings in acute Cytauxzoon felis infection in cougars (Puma concolor couguar) in Florida.

Intraerythrocytic piroplasms, morphologically indistinguishable from Cytauxzoon felis, were identified in stained blood films from more than one third of free-ranging cougars (Puma concolor couguar) in southern Florida in a study that failed to demonstrate negative effects of piroplasm infection on measured hematologic parameters. However, a recent study with a nested 18s rRNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay identified only 9% of the free-ranging cougars in southern Florida as infected with C. felis but found 83% of these animals were infected with an unnamed small Babesia sp.
