Brick tea fluoride as a main source of adult fluorosis.

An epidemiological survey was conducted in Naqu County, Tibet in September 2001 to investigate the manifestations of fluorosis in adults caused by the habitual consumption of brick tea. Profiles were obtained for the total daily fluoride intake, environmental fluoride levels and average urinary fluoride concentration, and a physical examination and a skeletal radiographic study were conducted. One hundred and eleven 30-78-year-old adults were enrolled. It was found that the fluoride level of water sources in Naqu County was 0.10+/-0.03 mg/l; no evidence of fluoride air pollution was found, but

Health effects of fluoride pollution caused by coal burning.

Recently a huge amount of fluoride in coal has been released into indoor environments by the combustion of coal and fluoride pollution seems to be increasing in some rural areas in China. Combustion of coal and coal bricks is the primary source of gaseous and aerosol fluoride and these forms of fluoride can easily enter exposed food products and the human respiratory tract. Major human fluoride exposure was caused by consumption of fluoride contaminated food, such as corn, chilies and potatoes. For each diagnostic syndrome of dental fluorosis, a log-normal distribution was observed on the loga

Altered phosphorylation of rat dentine phosphoproteins by fluoride in vivo.

Dentine phosphoproteins have been proposed to have an important role in mineralization. This study focused on the influence of fluoride on the biochemical composition of dentine phosphoproteins and attempts to relate changes to the altered mineralization witnessed during fluorosis. Wistar rats were rendered fluorotic by the administration of 20 ppm sodium fluoride in their drinking water ad libitum, a nonfluorotic group received double-distilled, deionized water only. After 17 weeks, the teeth showed signs of fluorosis. The incisors were removed, split longitudinally, and the pulps were remove

Short-term exposures of rats to airborne hydrogen fluoride.

A series of acute inhalation exposures was performed with airborne hydrogen fluoride (HF) to establish the concentration response for nonlethal effects in the rat. Exposures were either 2 or 10 min long; concentrations ranged from 135 to 8621 ppm. Three additional exposures (20 to 48 ppm) were performed for 60 min. A mouth-breathing (MB) model with a tracheal cannula was used in most of the exposures to maximize delivery of the HF to the lower respiratory tract. Endpoints on the day after exposure included hematology, serum chemistry, bronchoalveolar lavage, pulmonary function, organ weights,

Spectrophotometric determination of fluoride in dosage forms and dental preparations.

The method is based upon the reaction between fluoride ions and the coloured complex of Fe(III) with methyl salicylate to form the stable, colourless hexaflouride complex of iron. The conditions of the method (pH, time and combination ratio) were studied and a standard curve was obtained for 0.01-0.08 mg NaF ml-1, at 525 nm. A study was conducted on interference with complexing anions of Fe(III), cations that react with fluoride ions and with common ingredients of dosage forms and dental preparations. The method was validated and the results showed good precision (100.16 +/- = 2.33%) comparabl

Comparison of recommended and actual mean intakes of fluoride by Canadians.

The findings of two separate 1993 reports, one of the actual intake of fluoride by Canadians and the other on their recommended fluoride intake, are summarized and compared. Recent increases in very mild and mild dental fluorosis suggest that the gap between current fluoride intake and recommended intake is narrowing. The daily swallowing of fluoride dentifrice makes a large contribution to the actual total daily fluoride intake, especially in children seven months to four years of age, the age group most susceptible to fluorosis in the anterior permanent teeth. Because of the available data a

Fluoride--how much of a good thing? Introduction to the symposium.

January 25, 1995, is the 50th anniversary of the first controlled addition of fluoride to a public water supply. Those 50 years have seen extraordinary advances in oral health and consequent quality of life, for which fluoride use is generally considered the primary reason. More extensive exposure to fluoride in the modern era, however, has led to both a continuing decline in caries experience and an increased prevalence of dental fluorosis in children. At the other end of life, fluoride's role in bone strength among older people is not well defined. This symposium examines several aspects of

Fluoride and iron concentrations in the enameloid of lower teleostean fish.

Our quantitative elemental analyses with the electron microprobe indicated that the fluoride and iron concentrations in the enameloid of bony fish are related to the phylogeny of fish. The enameloid of some bony fish with high F also contained high Fe. In order to clarify the phylogenetic significance of such a peculiar dual deposition of F and Fe into developing enameloid, quantitative electron microprobe analyses of these elements were made on the teeth of taxonomically lower teleosts. There were significantly different trends of F and Fe concentrations in the enameloid among various forms o

Formation-stimulating regimens other than sodium fluoride.

Although no bone formation-stimulating regimen has been approved for treatment of established osteoporosis, there are a number of potentially effective drugs that are in various stages of preclinical and clinical testing. The two that show the greatest potential and the ones most likely to become available initially for clinical treatment are a parathyroid hormone fragment, PTH(1-34), and insulin-like growth factor-I. A promising approach for the future is to discover orally active agents that enhance the local production of growth factors by bone cells. It is likely that effective formation-s

Influence of occlusion on the fluoride distribution in rat molar cementum.

This study was undertaken to examine the influence of occlusion on the fluoride distribution in cementum following an experiment in which the occlusion in rats was locally altered by extracting the upper left molar. These and control rats with normal occlusion were given water containing 0 or 100 ppm fluoride for 12 weeks. The fluoride distributions in cementum from both first lower molars of the same animal were compared. The fluoride concentrations had increased throughout the tissue as a result of increased fluoride administration, irrespective of any changes in occlusion. They were, as usu

A randomized trial of sodium fluoride as a treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis.

The anti-fracture efficacy of sodium fluoride (NaF) was evaluated in 84 postmenopausal white women with spinal osteoporosis. The dose of NaF used was 75 mg/day and all patients in this prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial received calcium supplements (carbonate salt) 1500 mg/day in addition to participating in a structured physical therapy program. For each of the outcome measures (change in stature, change in cortical bone mass in the forearm and development of new vertebral fractures determined by change in vertebral morphometry and by scintigraphy) there

Exacerbation of rheumatoid arthritis by sodium fluoride treatment of osteoporosis.

Recent studies have suggested that sodium fluoride therapy may be an effective treatment for vertebral osteoporosis. Unfortunately, the high frequency of side effects may limit the use of this treatment modality. This report documents the repeated exacerbation of rheumatoid arthritis on three occasions after the initiation of sodium fluoride therapy. This apparent complication of sodium fluoride treatment may be mediated by stimulation of leukocyte production of reactive oxygen species and other mediators of the acute inflammatory response. We suggest that sodium fluoride should be used cautio

Fluoride in caries prevention: is the effect pre- or post-eruptive?

A longitudinal study of children from ages 7 to 18 showed that, if enamel lesions were included, the overall number was the same in fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas. However, a significant reducing effect of pre-eruptive fluoride could be seen in the number of dentinal lesions in a fluoridated area, provided that fluoride was also consumed post-eruptively for a considerable period of time. A precise estimation of both pre- and post-eruptive effects was obtained when teeth were classified according to their eruption time as related to the onset of water fluoridation. About 66% of the great…

A novel magnesium-dependent mechanism for the activation of transducin by fluoride.

Activation of transducin-GDP by NaF is mainly mediated by aluminofluorde or beryllofluoride complexes acting as GTP gamma-phosphate analogs. In millimolar magnesium, NaF at concentrations above 3 mM is active even in the absence of aluminium or beryllium. This activation has a Hill coefficient of 3 with respect to F-, and its rate is linear with respect to Mg2+ concentrations above 2 mM. Upon fluoride dilution, inactivation rate is hundreds of times faster than for aluminofluoride-activated T alpha GDP. We propose that at high NaF concentrations, 3 hydrogen-bonded fluorides in the gamma-phosph

Rapid monitoring of fluoride (F-) levels in blood plasma.

Evidence exists that plasma F- concentrations of 1.0 part/10(6) are nephrotoxic and that much lower levels disturb enamel mineralization. Ingested F(-)-containing gels, tablets and toothpastes all raise plasma F- levels significantly, as does prolonged exposure to fluorine-containing anaesthetic gases. There is, therefore, a continuing need to determine the total F- burden accruing in any given individual from multiple sources, as well as the average plasma F- burden which could be carried without risk to kidneys or teeth. To meet this need by facilitating fast and accurate monitoring of plasm

Delayed fatal hyperkalemia in a patient with acute fluoride intoxication.

A 19-year-old man presented with acute fluoride poisoning. Initially his serum electrolytes were normal, but two hours later he developed ECG evidence of hyperkalemia followed by refractory ventricular fibrillation, suggesting that hyperkalemia may be important in the cardiotoxicity of acute fluoride intoxication. Treatment of fluoride-induced hyperkalemia consists of removal of fluoride from the body by dialysis, binding fluoride with aluminum or calcium, or enhancing fluoride excretion by inducing a metabolic alkalosis. Direct treatment of the hyperkalemia with glucose, insulin, and bicarbon
